This book integrates diversified disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies of area studies, regional economic development, and regional science. With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. The changes in the Chinese food system are considered to have also affected the agriculture and food industries in Asian countries where economic interdependence has been promoted in past decades. The author argues these issues based on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary methods and approaches and has successfully derived empirical and theoretical results that are rich in policy implications. The topics addressed include food security and sustainability of agriculture especially in the suburbs of big cities; poverty reduction in rural agricultural areas amidst prosperity in urban and coastal areas; regional networks and international trade of the food industry in East Asia; creation of innovative knowledge and human capital for clustering of the agro-food sector; regional development strategy; and international cooperation. Während der Mainstream der Entwicklungspolitik ganz wesentlich auf wirtschaftliches Wachstum ausgerichtet war, fordert die nachhaltige Entwicklungspolitik eine Zusammenführung der drei Dimensionen Ökologie, Ökonomie und Soziales. Ein weiteres konstitutives Merkmal nachhaltiger Entwicklung ist die intra- und intergenerationelle Gerechtigkeit.
In der Neuauflage wurde der Ansatz des Neokolonialismus aufgenommen, der gegenwärtig ausführlich diskutiert wird.
Auch neue Überlegungen wie inclusive green growth wurden nun berücksichtigt. Hinzugefügt wurde eine Fallstudie einer nationalen Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie: Vietnam.

This book reveals how the formation of the Chinese socialist system in the 1950s dramatically transformed the nation’s economy, and charts how the newly established economic system functioned during the planned economy period (1949-1978), through focusing on Shanghai, which had served as the center of China’s modern economy since the latter half of the nineteenth century. Drawing on the rich historical primary sources of the Shanghai Municipal Archives, this study examines the impact of the institutional change wrought by the introduction of the socialist system on Shanghai’s economy, through a careful comparison with the economic structure before 1949. Moreover, it also explores the distinctive features of the Chinese socialist system, first and foremost the relationship between local governments and local businesses that came about through the socialist transformation of private enterprise, by analyzing Shanghai’s fiscal structure and a series of key industries, including the textile, machinery, rubber processing, cement, and power industries. This historical study proffers a new understanding of the long-term economic history of modern China across the pivotal 1949 and 1978 divides and sheds light on the origin of what has come to be known as "socialism with Chinese characteristics" today.

Since the mid-1960s, citizens' rights in the United States have improved across many areas, including race, gender, sexuality, physical disabilities, age, consumption of goods, voting, and more. During this time, there has also been a degradation in economic rights, such as economic inequality. Is there a reason for this contradiction? Is it possible for American citizens to experience rights and equality?


At the center of natural rights theories lies the "inalienable" right to private property, and the concepts and practices of the accumulation of private property always defeat personal liberties. Modern political philosophers who espouse natural rights, including liberal John Rawls and conservative James M. Buchanan, share nearly identical premises and goals. The two sides do not often recognize that the free-standing individual at the center of mainstream theorizing in economics and politics simply does not exist. We are social animals, all embedded in (unequal) networks of social and economic relations, requiring very different explanatory frameworks from those given by individual rights theorizing.


This book explores the ways in which the foundational ideology of individual rights belies the actualities of economic inequality. It argues that "individual rights" philosophy offers the main ideological basis for the astronomical accumulation of wealth that produces this inequality. Investigating the defects of rights theory, the book examines key concepts related to social progress and economic stability. The resulting text presents and analyzes the networks of contemporary corporate, business, and financial power that structurally and systemically limit the lives and choices of citizens in the United States.
