A major reevaluation of a towering figure in twentieth-century art and the relationship of his sculpture to the crisis of nationalism in modern Europe &nbsp; Figures of Crisis examines the neglected decade of artwork that separates the surrealist experiments of Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966) from his iconic postwar sculptures, revealing the connection between a famous artistic crisis in modern art and the crisis of national identity in modern Europe. In 1935, Giacometti abruptly abandoned his early abstract objects and devoted himself to sculpting portrait busts and minuscule figurines, many no larger than a fingernail. Joanna Fiduccia reimagines this fragmentary and inconspicuous body of work as the pivotal phase in his career, which registered the erosion of interwar democratic values and the searching questions this period posed for the future of modern sculpture. &nbsp; Challenging previous explanations of Giacometti’s return to figuration, Fiduccia argues that his figures gave form to the experience of social breakdown during the rise of fascism through their turbulent surfaces, unsettling generality, dramatic reduction of scale, and compulsive repetition. This fresh account, told through the philosophical, political, and aesthetic thought of Giacometti’s time, shows how ideologies of nationalism generated the problems of selfhood at the heart of modernism.

Under the present day's highly technological conditions, materiality in science as well as art is perceived increasingly as an agent located beyond conscious human perception in ecological, digital or neuronal environments. In this context, the term nonconscious (N. Katherine Hayles) refers to forms of computer-based experience as well as neuronal bodily processes. The contributions to this interdisciplinary publication enquire into the consequences of the nonconscious as material and imagination for aesthetic practices. A comprehensive presentation of the Yale University Art Gallery's collection of Italian paintings from the thirteenth to the fifteenth century &nbsp; The collection of Italian paintings at the Yale University Art Gallery is one of the largest and richest in the world. The first of four volumes on the collection, this sumptuously illustrated book features over seventy-five works dating from 1230 to 1420 by artists such as Taddeo Gaddi, Andrea di Cione (better known as Orcagna), Lippo Memmi, Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti, and Lorenzo Monaco. In addition to discussions of each painting's meaning, function, and significance, entries provide published references, provenance, full technical notes, and detailed conservation histories. An introduction by Laurence Kanter chronicles the history of the collection, from the James Jackson Jarves Collection that was assembled in the nineteenth century-the earliest formed collection of Italian paintings in any American museum-to more recent gifts by Louis and Hannah Rabinowitz and Richard Feigen. While many of the works are from Florence and Siena, the volume also includes examples from Bologna, Rimini, Venice, and more. Not since Walter Benjamin's Age of Mechanical Reproduction has there been a similar challenge to humanist art criticism. In considering this question, Nora Khan looks at the rush of institutions to place AI Art within an art-historical lineage while they simultaneously accept significant funding from technology companies. She discusses the scale and speed at which technological production, machine learning, and AI have abraded the individual's capacity for critical evaluation, moving us to consider what a shared, collective criticism of AI might sound like.
