Governing Post-Winter Olympic Games Legacies

Salt Lake City 2002, Vancouver 2010, PyeongChang 2018

Chapter 1 Introduction.- Chapter 2 The 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games: Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation.- Chapter 3 The 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games: Whistler Sport Legacies.- Chapter 4 The 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games: LIFT Impact Partners.- Chapter 5 The 2018 PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games: PyeongChang Legacy Foundation.- Chapter 6 Discussion and Conclusion.

What if the biggest obstacle to solving our problems is nothing more than a failure to believe that we can?Rick Caruso has spent his life stepping optimistically into places where other people see no way forward by asking a deceptively simple question: What can we do to make this better? From his appointment as Commissioner to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and later the City's troubled Police Department, to the creation of his bold and innovative real estate ventures including L.A.'s world-renowned retail center The Grove, Caruso built a reputation for finding steadfast solutions even in the face of staunch adversity. By employing the great teachers of experience and curiosity, he continues to do what he can to improve Los Angeles, the city he loves, and in Breaking New Ground, he shares lessons learned along the way--while offering us all a path forward to a better future.Again and again, Caruso discovered that breakthroughs rarely come from knowing everything at the outset. They come from asking better questions, bringing the right people into the room, listening without ego, separating ideology from reality, and refusing to give up until workable solutions emerge. Ultimately, they require a steadfast dedication to the belief that there is always a solution and that defeat is not an option.Breaking New Ground is the story of how his philosophy was forged--from the examples of immigrant grandparents and a father who lost one fortune and built another, to Caruso's own successes, failures, public battles, family life, faith, and unexpected turns through business and government.Caruso is less interested in prescribing a formula for becoming successful than in exploring how successful problem-solvers think: how they distinguish what matters from what merely makes noise; how they balance conviction with compromise; how they recognize when conventional wisdom has stopped working; and how they remain fearless enough to see difficult decisions through.Part memoir, part argument, and part blueprint for action, Breaking New Ground offers a timely proposition for anyone confronting a problem that feels too complicated, entrenched, or divisive to solve. There is always another way forward. Sometimes you simply have to be willing to build it.

It’s Not too Late to Build Toward a Better Future!

The Power of Finding Steadfast Solutions

Breaking New Ground

This book reimagines plastics before they become waste to show how creative interventions open pathways for action, understanding, and change.Drawing on ethnographic insight and real-world experience from participatory artmaking, creative workshops, fieldtrips, and beach cleans, the book offers a fresh, accessible way to think about power, plastics, spectacle, and science. Ideal for anyone wondering what can be done to shift public thinking on plastics, it provides critical perspective and hands-on inspiration, highlighting the importance of working with and learning from existing grassroots initiatives. The book is for people who seek to build public understanding and collective momentum around the plastics challenge. It is written for readers interested in interpreting science in accessible ways and turning concern into community action.Plastics: Creative Solutions will appeal to environmental advocates, community organisers, and scientists, as well as scholars and students in Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Geography, Science and Technology Studies (STS), and Materials Studies. By bridging critical reflection and practical engagement, it speaks to both practitioners and researchers who want to work collaboratively to build meaningful, locally grounded responses to plastics

Interdisciplinary Approaches for Policy Design and Evaluation

Citizen-Based Policy

This pioneering book examines the key factors shaping targeted public procurement within Canadian federal departments, focusing specifically on two significant social procurement policies: the Federal Contractors Program and the Procurement Strategy for Aboriginal Businesses. By investigating the implementation and effectiveness of these policies, the book addresses an important gap in the existing literature and offers new insights into the role of government procurement in advancing social policy objectives. It demonstrates how public procurement can contribute to broader goals of inclusion, equity, and social justice in Canada. The practical contribution of this book lies in the case study insights that illuminate the successes and challenges faced during the policy implementation phase. These findings are invaluable for federal government departments in Canada, as well as for other Commonwealth countries, offering a framework for understanding how targeted procurement can support socio-economic objectives. This research is particularly relevant to developed countries like Canada and Australia, which share similar political, cultural, and economic contexts. With the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which has disproportionately impacted vulnerable communities, this book highlights the potential of social procurement as a strategy to create employment opportunities for marginalized groups. The findings benefit a wide range of stakeholders, including regulators, policymakers, procurement practitioners, and researchers. This book provides a new framework for assessing public procurement practices, which could serve as a tool for improving employment equity and setting best practices in procurement processes. It is essential reading for academics and policymakers aiming to enhance socio-economic outcomes through targeted public procurement.

Inclusion of Social Services in Public Procurement

A fairer, healthier, more caring and sustainable society is entirely within our grasp. The renowned co-author of The Spirit Level shows us the way.'An uplifting vision for solving inequality that benefits everyone' ANDY BURNHAM'Poverty and inequality are at the heart of all our problems. Kate Pickett's book shows how tackling them must be at the heart of our solutions too' ZACK POLANSKI'Just what these times are crying out for' KATE RAWORTHHow do we ensure that everyone has good health and receives the care they need? How do we provide education that allows every child to flourish? How do we ensure safety, justice and a sustainable environment for all?In this inspiring book, world-leading social scientist Kate Pickett shows that to make a good society - in which everyone has what they need to be well, and everyone would be better off - we must prioritise the health, care, education and rehabilitation of those who have the least and suffer the most. Drawing on decades of proven solutions and success stories from around the globe, The Good Society cuts to the essence of the challenges we face and presents us with a practical, perspective-shifting vision for how to tackle them.'Genuinely transformative. A powerful and deeply humane vision that focuses on what really matters' DANIEL CHANDLER'Daringly optimistic' FINANCIAL TIMES'Electrifying' POLLY MORLAND'Vital ... shines a light for hope' INDEPENDENT

American Crossroads

In The Southern Question, Jordan T. Camp considers the challenges of organizing against rising fascism. He turns to Antonio Gramsci's 1926 essay, "Some Aspects of the Southern Question" to do so. The essay compels organizers to overcome divisions and forge alliances across spaces of difference. Before it was ever published, Gramsci was arrested and confined to a fascist prison. A century later, Camp revisits his theory of alliance building across spaces of uneven capitalist development. He expands Gramsci's insights into different souths, including the Jim Crow American South, apartheid South Africa, and the neocolonial Caribbean. In each site, he centers radical theorists such as W.E.B. Du Bois, Angela Y. Davis, Ruth First, and Stuart Hall. Drawing on their political writings as well as extensive archival research, he "translates" the southern question into different spaces and contexts. In doing so, the book locates the roots of authoritarian and fascist political projects within the historical geography of racist and colonial capitalisms. Most significantly, Camp demonstrates the implications of translating anti-fascist theories into practice for the present conjuncture.

Anti-Fascism and the Global Conjuncture

The Southern Question: Volume 79

Foundations of Public Policy: Theory, Process, and Practice from the Global South offers students and practitioners a new way of thinking about policy that is both globally informed and locally grounded. Drawing on cases such as doorstep food delivery program, community-driven welfare models, and digital governance experiments, the book shows how theory can illuminate practice, and how practice can reshape theory. Unlike most textbooks that rely on Global North examples, this book centres the Global South as a site of theory-building. It introduces students to the ontological and epistemological foundations of policy, then moves through its grammar, types, actors, and implementation before presenting policy frameworks from both the global north and south with case studies from the global south, which captures the complex and iterative nature of decision-making in our governance ecosystem. Each chapter blends conceptual clarity with pedagogy. Reflective prompts and learning competencies guide readers to connect policy science with lived governance case studies discussed in each chapter. By the final chapter, readers are equipped to critically analyse emerging challenges such as digitalisation, citizen participation, and algorithmic policy. This is more than a theoretical text: it is a handbook for public policy learners in the Global South and a comparative resource for Global North readers seeking to understand policymaking beyond Western assumptions.

Foundations of Public Policy

Political Corruption and Governance

This book explores how public sector organisations at both national and local levels of Swedish government work to promote integrity and fight ethics violations.Integrity and ethical conduct are key to maintaining citizens' trust in public organisations. Whilst various performance indicators suggest that public governance works well and corruption is low, citizens still perceive corruption and other ethics violations to be pertinent problems. In such contexts, ethics management plays an important role for upholding integrity. This book examines these issues in the context of Sweden. It analyses how ethics management is used in public sector organisations, offers new insights on staff and stakeholder inclusion in public sector ethics management, and presents practical solutions based on theoretically informed in-depth empirical research. It will appeal to students and scholars of public policy, public administration and governance, as well as practiitoners. Staffan Andersson

This book explores how public sector organisations work to promote integrity and fight ethics violations. Integrity and ethical conduct are key to maintaining public confidence in these organisations. Many established and wealthy democracies face a paradoxical situation. While various performance indicators suggest that public governance works comparatively well and with relatively low corruption levels, citizens still perceive corruption and other ethics violations to be pertinent problems. In such contexts, ethics management plays an important role for upholding integrity. This book examines these issues in the context of Sweden, at both national and local levels of government. It analyses ethics management strategies in public sector organisations and the bodies that support their ethics work, offers new insights on staff and stakeholder inclusion, and presents practical solutions based on theoretically informed in-depth empirical research. It will appeal to students and scholars of public policy, public administration and governance, as well as practitioners.

Public Sector Ethics in Practice

This open access book examines why citizens in democratic societies support or oppose restrictive alcohol policies. Drawing on more than two decades of data from Sweden, it provides a comprehensive and theoretically informed analysis of public attitudes toward key alcohol policy instruments, including alcohol taxation, the retail monopoly, licensing regulations, advertising restrictions, farm sales, and other proposals affecting alcohol availability and control. It also analyses how alcohol-related public opinion is shaped by social background, self-interest, value orientations, perceptions of alcohol-related harm, beliefs about the effectiveness of policy instruments, ideological views about responsibility, and trust in institutions. The book addresses a central problem not only in alcohol policy but also in democratic theory and public opinion research more broadly: under what conditions do citizens support policies that may constrain their own choices, impose costs, or reduce convenience in order to protect others and reduce collective harm?

In doing so, it speaks to broader questions about democratic legitimacy, regulation, risk governance, and public support for interventions in liberal democracies.
