Port cities of the world are critical nodes for international trade and socio-economic development. Yet they bear several costs, of which congestion and pollution, which affect the local environment and population. In certain places, living near the port -together with related industrial and logistical activities -is synonym of adverse health outcomes, resulting in several diseases and above-average unplanned hospital admissions and mortality. Decades of port-city physical separation have not eliminated such issues, since deep-water facilities, even outside urban cores, impact local populations and reach port and non-port cities through extensive trucking flows. Specific traffic, like cruise, keep operating within dense urban environments.This book is one of the first dedicated volumes on such matters, with contributions from scholars in several continents (Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania). It is highly interdisciplinary, covering geography, history, economics, management sciences, regional science, sociology, public and comparative law, physics, energy and industrial engineering, urban and spatial planning, epidemiology, architecture, biology, and environmental sciences. Environmental economics is growing rapidly. It is simply not sufficient to consider consumption, production, and welfare in isolation from the natural environment. Integrating ecological systems in economic analysis requires to take the possible occurrence of tipping points or regime shifts into account. This Element focuses on two recent developments in environmental economics theory. One is economic management of ecological systems with tipping points, with the lake as the classical example. The other one is investigating the consequences of uncertain possible shocks to parameters in economic models, with the carrying capacity in a fishery and total factor productivity (due to climate tipping) in Ramsey growth as examples. This Element provides a precise account of the concepts, techniques, and results in the analysis of these models, which shows the effects of tipping and allows for other applications. The Feminist Economics of Austerity

This book analyzes the impact of national culture on a range of corporate carbon practices in major economies since the Paris Agreement. It does so by exploring the interaction between hard institutions such as carbon policies and regulation and soft institutions such as national culture.The book focuses on national culture as a key factor in corporate decarbonization practices, one traditionally overlooked by analytical frameworks rooted in economic development, laws and regulation. It argues that fighting climate change requires collaboration from organisations in countries with diverse cultures. Managers and various stakeholders who exert significant influence over climate actions are likely to respond to a climate threat in accordance with their cultural prescriptions towards risk, regulation, environmental stewardship and stakeholder engagement. Analysing a large, cross-country dataset covering firms from both developing and emerging companies, the book analyses firm-level decisions, behaviours, strategies and outcomes related to decarbonization. It finds that corporate decisions to decarbonize are influenced not just by formal institutions such as macrolevel regulations, climate standards and policies, but softer institutions such as national culture which either facilitate or constrain a firm's ability to adopt effective climate strategies. The book highlights the importance of context-sensitive climate governance and closes by outlining areas of future research.Sitting at the intersection of cultural studies and corporate environmental governance, this book will interest researchers and policy makers working on sustainability, accounting and environmental management.
