Elements in Environmental, Natural Resource and Sustainable Development Economic

Environmental economics is growing rapidly. It is simply not sufficient to consider consumption, production, and welfare in isolation from the natural environment. Integrating ecological systems in economic analysis requires to take the possible occurrence of tipping points or regime shifts into account. This Element focuses on two recent developments in environmental economics theory. One is economic management of ecological systems with tipping points, with the lake as the classical example. The other one is investigating the consequences of uncertain possible shocks to parameters in economic models, with the carrying capacity in a fishery and total factor productivity (due to climate tipping) in Ramsey growth as examples. This Element provides a precise account of the concepts, techniques, and results in the analysis of these models, which shows the effects of tipping and allows for other applications. This Element starts with a broader list of examples and management options.

Throughout the twentieth century, planning and planners were central to our understanding of cities and regions. Today, however, planning is facing powerful challenges - professionally, intellectually, practically - in ways arguably not seen before. Recent developments and trends are raising fundamental questions about how we plan regions. Planning is no longer solely the domain of professional planners but has been opened up to a diverse group of actors, each with their own interests. The study of cities and regions was traditionally taught in planning schools and geography departments, but this link with place and space disciplines is being steadily eroded as research increasingly takes place in and through interdisciplinary research institutes.Against this backdrop, Regions in Evolution provides the first comprehensive account of a hitherto untold history of regions and planning. Told through the unique lens of regional studies, the authors bring to light the role of key individuals, groups and disciplines in shaping research agendas and debate. It reveals voices which were marginalised, planning ideas which were lost, approaches that keep coming back and challenges that persist. Believing passionately in the values and purpose of regional planning, while sceptical of the one-size-fits-all institutional form that Regional Planning often adopts, the authors develop an argument for planning regional futures based on a multitude of approaches, methods and strategies that might still require someone to make sense of it all.

The rising volume of critique and commentary about the green economy is preceding a much-needed, global understanding of the concept: the principal aim of this book, accordingly, is to provide a detailed analysis of the emergence, anatomy and workings of the green economy. This book examines policy interventions ranging from those related to finance and tenure to building materials and processes. Urbanization is growing in both developed and developing countries. The proportion of the world’s urban population is expected to increase to about 57% by 2050, and the share of Africa's urban population is project to increase to 60% by the same year. As a result of this phenomenal growth in urban population, urbanization and urban poverty have begun to dominate the development discourse again after years of focusing on rural development.
Housing is a crucial issue for the urban poor, who are often concentrated in informal settlements that often do not have sufficient access to infrastructure, health, and education services. The urban poor overwhelmingly lack land to build their own houses or access to financing that would allow them to purchase or build homes. Furthermore, housing provision has largely fallen to central governments, and policy has largely overlooked the capacity of the urban poor—as individuals and communities—to provide housing for themselves.
This book engages these challenges and assumptions, offering insight into political, economic, environmental, and financial frameworks that can help facilitate adequate housing options. Drawing on examples from 14 case studies across sub-Saharan Africa, these contributions center the urban poor in initiatives to develop housing infrastructure, offering lessons for researchers and governments looking to address an ever-escalating housing crisis.

This book aims to link a company's investments in sustainability to enhanced competitive advantage. It allows the reader a rare glimpse inside different companies (both large and small-sized companies and from across public and private sectors) that have made deep commitments to integrating sustainable practices.
