Shaping a Sustainable Future

Relationships in trade and investment between Europe, the United States, and sub-Saharan Africa have long been asymmetrical, marked by systemic overcharges, underpayments, and exploitative practices. This book highlights a concept called kleptomation: a systematic, sustained theft of labor, resources, and wealth. Chapters examine the depth, breadth, and persistence of this economic injustice, exploring the inauthentic accumulation of wealth on the part of the West over the course of several hundred years.In the book, economist Richard F.&nbsp;America&nbsp;proposes a unified framework for reparations to address centuries of wrongful enrichment, illicit transactions, and hidden subsidies that have fueled Western prosperity. This framework is clearly defined and grounded in redistributive economic justice. Acknowledging previous attempts to repair the damage caused by kleptomation, this book presents a 40-year plan that international development executives, policymakers, and program managers can use to scale up capital transfers for development programs in Africa.Drawing on historical analysis and contemporary policy debates, the book exposes flaws in international trade accounting that obscure the true scale of wealth extraction. It calls for sustained capital transfers and structural reforms to recover unjust enrichment and accelerate Africa’s development over the next four decades. The resulting resource provides practical guidance for policymakers, development practitioners, and global institutions—including the World Bank, the European Union, the African Union, and civil society—seeking to end chronic poverty and achieve broadly shared prosperity within 40 years.Richard F.&nbsp;America&nbsp;

 People Want?” (Harvard Business Review, 1969), helped set the stage for the ongoing discussion of a form of reparations in the United States. His work in Africa has focused on improving management education, impact investing, and corporate philanthropy, strengthening African business schools, and expanding local and community-based economic development. He is the editor of 
 Accounting for Colonialism 
 (Palgrave Macmillan, 2024).

This timely, innovative book navigates the so-called 'Cambrian explosion' of FinTech companies and more specifically to the emergence of Blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies through the lens of the case of Ripple, a company in the field of cryptoassets and cross-border payments. Combining STS with human geography and political economy, it navigates the maelstrom of proliferating new and old payment infrastructure, to develop a theoretical and empirical 'infrastructural inversion' of money. Money does not just flow through or behave like an infrastructure, but rather it is an infrastructure, because it is predicated upon the existence of accounting and payment infrastructures of memory for its very existence. Using the concepts of active forms and dispositions from design and architecture, this nuanced book analyses how money's infrastructures act in the world materially, spatially, as objects and subjects of desire and as political and economic machines. If we want new forms of money for new forms of society, we need to think holistically and ecologically about the complex combinations of materiality, space, desire and political economies that money generates and propagates. Tracing the trajectory of a cryptoasset project from an alternative credit system to an interbank, cross-border company, the book moves beyond a Bitcoin-centric view of money. It reveals how alternative and mainstream, networked and sovereign forms of money have long been intertwined.

What goals are still feasible for the politics of emancipation on a ruined planet? This is where we are. Today's techno-oligarchs are not concerned with saving the planet; rather, they have accepted the end of progress and are focused on safeguarding their wealth in the face of an impending political and ecological collapse. Artificial intelligence and algorithms make decisions for us. Climate breakdown has long steamed past the wreckage of the Paris Agreement. Perhaps the accelerationists have the right idea. Accelerationism - which aims to resolve the current crisis through the intensification of technological development - is the only philosophy not clinging to the now-extinct idea of progress. The idea has gained ground on both the left and right: but the right-wing is shot through with misanthropy, while the left remains entangled in a faith in technological progress and the domination of nature.
