This book showcases the work of Annapurna Pariwar, an NGO comprising six organizations, over the past 30 years and its impact on changing the lives of low-income working women with small businesses in the slums of Mumbai and Pune in the Indian state of Maharashtra. This group of six organizations together forms a social enterprise, established at a time of major changes in the Indian economy in the form of globalization and urbanization. The NGO set out to address issues of livelihood and poverty alleviation in slums. Adopting a path that was sustainable and did not depend upon grants, the journey is a fascinating account of learnings in organizational evolution and its impact on the lives of poor women.The book is divided into two parts. The first part has three chapters charting the journey of Annapurna Pariwar based on interviews with Medha Tai, the founder of Annapurna Pariwar. These chapters discuss milestones, organizational evolution, and challenges, especially demonetization and COVID-19. The lifecycle of the organization and of the women in the case studies are juxtaposed within the framework of financial, physical, sociocultural, and political spaces. The second part of the book contains analyses from well-known authors and academics who contextualize the relevance of Annapurna Pariwar’s work and future against microfinance, microinsurance, plus services, social entrepreneurship, digitization, and urban landscapes. The book thus contributes not only to the practice-field; it has several academic contributions as well for researchers studying social phenomena such as social entrepreneurship, microfinance, cooperatives, women empowerment, and women entrepreneurship. While doing so, it addresses SDGs such as SDG3, SDG5, SDG8, and SDG11. A surge in right-wing radicalization marked by hate speech and anti-immigrant anxieties has also been noted. States have subsequently sought to develop approaches to counter these groups, with variable success. While some countries have been relatively successful in countering radicalization, others have seen an increase in the number of terrorist attacks. Using comparative analysis, this book examines the controversial subject of de-radicalization as a tool of the state in modifying political behaviour. Drawing on multiple country case studies, it assesses how governments around the world use counter-terrorism policies and measures, be it through policing, the judicial process, state-sponsored programs or community approaches, to address extremist radicalization. It also considers how effective these policies have been in modifying extremist forms of behaviour, and why some countries have been more successful than others. It will appeal to scholars and students of public policy, international human rights, international relations and counter-terrorism studies.

First published in 1965, the original blurb reads: "At the present time more and more public interest centres on crime, prison and prisoners, and the prison population in this country now exceeds 24, 000. The average cost of keeping a prisoner for one year is over £500 and on the financial side alone it is essential that something is done to reduce crime, and particularly, in Mrs Bishop's opinion, to reduce the number of men and women reconvicted and sent back to prison. Every year a large number of prisoners are released into society, and undoubtably the biggest problem facing them is their rehabilitation. Some responsibility for after-care rests inevitably on members of the public who, by their attitude to discharged prisoners and their willingness to accept back to society those who have offended against the laws of the country, can influence the attitude of the ex-criminal towards a new way of life. In order to help, it is necessary to understand something of the problems and difficulties a prisoner has to face when he is released, and it is with this need in view that this book has been written.For nineteen years Mrs Bishop, as a magistrate, has been sentencing those who come into the Courts and seeing their records of previous convictions. She has also pioneered an unusual club, restricted to ex-prisoners, which has given her a unique opportunity to study at first hand the problems and difficulties facing a man or woman fresh from prison. The book is full of examples taken from actual experience which gives it unusual human interest. Several probation officers, prison governors and ex-prisoners themselves have read and passed the script as authentic in its facts and true in its implications." Still a topic of concern today this can be read in its historical context.This book is a re-issue originally published in 1965. Psychology of Traffickers: Insights from Romanian Prisons offers a rare and methodologically rigorous examination of the moral and psychological worlds of individuals convicted of human trafficking. Based on in-depth qualitative interviews with twenty incarcerated traffickers in Romania, the book analyzes how exploitation is rationalized, normalized, and sustained over time within conditions of inequality, migration, and institutional constraint.Rather than portraying traffickers as aberrant or pathological, Dr. Bogdan situates their actions within everyday social and moral frameworks: intimate relationships, informal economies, gendered expectations, and bureaucratic systems that enable harm through routine practices and moral distancing. Through traffickers' own narratives, the book reveals how responsibility is displaced, coercion reframed, and exploitation rendered psychologically livable.Integrating offender accounts with criminological and forensic psychological theory, the book develops empirically grounded typologies of trafficking involvement and moral coping.
