A Context, Process and People Narrative

The Discovery of Digital India

Perspectives on Development in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region

This book offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary account of Iran’s changing energy landscape and the closely connected challenges of governance, sustainable development, and geopolitics. Rather than examining these issues in isolation, it brings together technical, socioeconomic, institutional, and environmental perspectives. The book explores the contrast between Iran’s vast hydrocarbon wealth and its deepening energy crisis, examining the burden of energy subsidies, the slow expansion of renewable energy, and the growing pressures created by water scarcity and climate change. It also proposes practical reform strategies that recognize both domestic institutional constraints and external political and economic pressures. The analysis extends beyond Iran’s borders to consider the strategic importance of regional energy chokepoints and transportation corridors. Particular attention is given to the Strait of Hormuz, both as a vital artery for global energy trade and as a source of geopolitical leverage and vulnerability. The book also examines how emerging connectivity projects—including the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), the International North–South Transport Corridor, and the Trans-Caspian Middle Corridor—could reshape regional trade, energy transit, and Iran’s position within evolving Eurasian supply chains.Written for academics, policymakers, industry specialists, investors, and practitioners, the book combines critical policy analysis, technical assessment, and scenario-based research to clarify the choices facing Iran and their consequences for the wider region. Amid sanctions, geopolitical tensions, vulnerable infrastructure, and mounting domestic shortages, Iran’s energy transition is far more than a technological or environmental challenge: it is a test of the country’s economic resilience, institutional capacity, and regional strategy. By tracing the connections among domestic reform, energy security, environmental sustainability, transit diplomacy, and regional cooperation, the book fills an important gap in the literature and provides a timely guide to Iran’s evolving place in regional and global energy affairs.

Cultural Economics & the Creative Economy

This edited volume presents an innovative approach to the relationship between cultural heritage and sustainable development, focusing on geographic factors and spatial economic analysis. Focusing on Italian case studies, the book unpacks various opportunities and challenges and explores how promoting and defending cultural heritage at the regional and national levels can in turn foster sustainable development.Chapters consider both tangible and intangible aspects of the cultural supply, such as museums and festivals, and investigate specific issues relevant to sustainability, from the role of networks on museums’ performance in remote areas to the effects of climate change on heritage sites. The book also pays special attention to the role of tourism, the various factors that impact tourist numbers, as well as how negative impacts can be mitigated. Several chapters focus on social capital and the importance of civic engagement and belonging in encouraging sustainable economic growth. This book will be of interest to scholars and students in a range of fields, including cultural economics, regional economics, economic geography, heritage studies and those working on sustainability more broadly.Silvia Cerisola

An Introduction to Theory, Policy, and Practice

Cybercrime and Digital Forensics

This book offers a fresh perspective on work showing how past events, ideas, practices and values haunt organizations. In a contemporary context where organizations are ever more obsessed with growth and transformation, the book discovers a politics of time at the heart of questions about power and ethics. It develops a non-linear approach to the history of education showing what it means to inherit from previous generations and how encounters with ghosts can open possibilities of other, alternative futures. For academics and students across management, education, and sociology, the book is a crucial resource for understanding contemporary organizations. It invites you to find new ways to care for the future of work.

Are milk and dairy products still fit for the 21st century? As concerns about animal welfare, climate change and human health reshape our food systems, milk has become one of the most contested staples on our tables. In M*lk, Orla Shortall investigates the dairy dilemma by exploring the hidden realities of how milk is produced today. Travelling between farms across Britain, Ireland, Europe and North America, she meets dairy farmers and their cows, examining the challenges facing contemporary dairy farming, the rise of veganism and plant-based alternatives, and emerging ideas about how humans and cattle might coexist differently. Combining sharp wit with compassionate reporting and rigorous research, Shortall invites readers to reconsider their own relationship with dairy, and to ask what a more sustainable and ethical future for milk might look like.

This book tackles Jakarta’s pressing environmental and governance challenges, with their wider implications for Indonesia. Underpinned by deep scientific analysis, it highlights the need for integrated planning and ecosystem protection to avert disasters. It critiques the current urban development focus on economic growth, which often overlooks the need for sustainability and inclusiveness. By promoting good governance, this book emphasizes the crucial role of preserving both land and marine ecosystems in urban planning to protect Jakarta from environmental and disaster risks. The uniqueness of this book stems from its sharp critique of current development models that neglect environmental and social sustainability, leading to social exclusion and marginalization. It is organized into four main sections, each dissecting different facets of governance and ecological tactics vital for sustaining Jakarta. Aimed at students, academics, policymakers, and business leaders dealing with Jakarta's intricate challenges, this book introduces fresh methodologies and viewpoints. It brings together a range of experts to discuss historical contexts, practical realities, and strategic visions. As a thorough guide for re-envisioning Jakarta’s development strategies, it encourages a vital discussion on reshaping urban growth to prevent the city from sinking while promoting a more inclusive and sustainable urban future.

Critical Memory Studies

This open access book proposes slow memory as a new framework for understanding how remembrance operates across time, urging scholars and practitioners to resist the acceleration that characterizes both contemporary scholarship and public memory cultures. The authors explore the theoretical foundations of slow memory in relation to environmental humanities and Indigenous studies, emphasizing themes of deep time, intergenerational justice, and contested memory regimes. The collection focuses on the fields of environment, (de)industrialization, welfare, politics, and conflict to examine how gradual transformations impact the present through remembrance practices at different tempos. It advocates for a deceleration of scholarly and commemorative practices to develop ethical, sustainable, and inclusive engagements with the past. By foregrounding slowness as a conceptual and methodological tool, and slow memory as a "connective concept," this book offers a vital framework for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to rethink the temporalities of remembrance in an era of rapid transformation. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. This publication is based upon work from COST Action CA20105 on Slow Memory, supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). COST is a funding agency for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and enable scientists to grow their ideas by sharing them with their peers. This boosts their research, career and innovation.

Theory and Practice for Transformative Change

Slowing Down Memory Studies

How mental health and illness have transformed from medical concepts into widely shared cultural ideas Discussions about mental health are ubiquitous, and individuals’ “challenges,” “struggles,” and “crises” are frequent fodder for media coverage and online content. Mental illness, however, is strikingly absent from these conversations. Why are we comfortable talking about mental health but not about mental illness? In Our Mental Health, Their Mental Illness, Amy Johnson argues that as these two terms became widely shared cultural ideas, their meanings diverged. People can struggle with their mental health and still be considered “normal”; meanwhile, the language of mental illness is deployed to describe those who are perceived as abnormal—or even dangerous. Drawing on articles from major US newspapers published between 1980 and 2020 and Reddit posts from 2019 to 2023, Johnson explores how the public came to understand mental health and mental illness as two sides of a social—and not simply medical—boundary. Employing methods of computational text analysis as well as qualitative close reading, Johnson shows that despite open discussions of mental health, mental illness remains a stigmatized category, broadly used to denigrate certain groups and often deployed as an explanation for violent acts. The boundary between mental health and mental illness, drawn by actors other than medical professionals, clearly delineates who is normal and who is not, creating an axis of inequality that intersects with other axes such as race and gender. The twenty-first century focus on mental health has not created universal acceptance but has instead contributed to social division.
