Perspectives on Development in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region

This book offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary account of Iran’s changing energy landscape and the closely connected challenges of governance, sustainable development, and geopolitics. Rather than examining these issues in isolation, it brings together technical, socioeconomic, institutional, and environmental perspectives. The book explores the contrast between Iran’s vast hydrocarbon wealth and its deepening energy crisis, examining the burden of energy subsidies, the slow expansion of renewable energy, and the growing pressures created by water scarcity and climate change. It also proposes practical reform strategies that recognize both domestic institutional constraints and external political and economic pressures. The analysis extends beyond Iran’s borders to consider the strategic importance of regional energy chokepoints and transportation corridors. Particular attention is given to the Strait of Hormuz, both as a vital artery for global energy trade and as a source of geopolitical leverage and vulnerability. The book also examines how emerging connectivity projects—including the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), the International North–South Transport Corridor, and the Trans-Caspian Middle Corridor—could reshape regional trade, energy transit, and Iran’s position within evolving Eurasian supply chains.Written for academics, policymakers, industry specialists, investors, and practitioners, the book combines critical policy analysis, technical assessment, and scenario-based research to clarify the choices facing Iran and their consequences for the wider region. Amid sanctions, geopolitical tensions, vulnerable infrastructure, and mounting domestic shortages, Iran’s energy transition is far more than a technological or environmental challenge: it is a test of the country’s economic resilience, institutional capacity, and regional strategy. By tracing the connections among domestic reform, energy security, environmental sustainability, transit diplomacy, and regional cooperation, the book fills an important gap in the literature and provides a timely guide to Iran’s evolving place in regional and global energy affairs.

War, Sanctions, and Systemic Vulnerability

Iran’s Energy Transition Under Constraint

Born from a desire for creative freedom, web series often circumvent screen industry gatekeepers and attract smaller, niche audiences; but fewer views do not necessarily make the format, or its audience engagement, less valuable. This book looks behind the scenes to uncover how and why audiences engaged with nine Australian web series released between 2020 and 2023. Interviews with web series producers reveal their motivations, audience acquisition and maintenance strategies, funding methods, and platform specific approaches. These first-hand accounts are then compared with viewership metrics and the content of audience commentary, resulting in the illumination of social, cultural, and industrial values of audience engagement with these innovative productions. This book identifies key factors that influence audience behaviours such as perceived authenticity, platform choice, and the types, forms, and costs of engaging with web series. These factors are considered with respect to online community building, relationships between creators and audiences, and commercial uses of the format, resulting in the creation of a typology of web series audiences. Readers benefit from understanding the value and characteristics of each type of viewer across a diverse range of examples featuring differing audience demographics, zero to over $1 million budgets, and platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok. Vibrant narratives are used to convey each series' backstory, providing an informative and engaging reading experience for screen industry practitioners, marketing and broadcast professionals, and aspiring filmmakers. Academics and students in the fields of media studies, audience engagement, screen production, creative labour and entrepreneurship, social media, and algorithmic culture will also benefit from this research.

Critical Memory Studies

This open access book proposes slow memory as a new framework for understanding how remembrance operates across time, urging scholars and practitioners to resist the acceleration that characterizes both contemporary scholarship and public memory cultures. The authors explore the theoretical foundations of slow memory in relation to environmental humanities and Indigenous studies, emphasizing themes of deep time, intergenerational justice, and contested memory regimes. The collection focuses on the fields of environment, (de)industrialization, welfare, politics, and conflict to examine how gradual transformations impact the present through remembrance practices at different tempos. It advocates for a deceleration of scholarly and commemorative practices to develop ethical, sustainable, and inclusive engagements with the past. By foregrounding slowness as a conceptual and methodological tool, and slow memory as a "connective concept," this book offers a vital framework for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to rethink the temporalities of remembrance in an era of rapid transformation. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. This publication is based upon work from COST Action CA20105 on Slow Memory, supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). COST is a funding agency for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and enable scientists to grow their ideas by sharing them with their peers. This boosts their research, career and innovation.

Theory and Practice for Transformative Change

Slowing Down Memory Studies

How mental health and illness have transformed from medical concepts into widely shared cultural ideas Discussions about mental health are ubiquitous, and individuals’ “challenges,” “struggles,” and “crises” are frequent fodder for media coverage and online content. Mental illness, however, is strikingly absent from these conversations. Why are we comfortable talking about mental health but not about mental illness? In Our Mental Health, Their Mental Illness, Amy Johnson argues that as these two terms became widely shared cultural ideas, their meanings diverged. People can struggle with their mental health and still be considered “normal”; meanwhile, the language of mental illness is deployed to describe those who are perceived as abnormal—or even dangerous. Drawing on articles from major US newspapers published between 1980 and 2020 and Reddit posts from 2019 to 2023, Johnson explores how the public came to understand mental health and mental illness as two sides of a social—and not simply medical—boundary. Employing methods of computational text analysis as well as qualitative close reading, Johnson shows that despite open discussions of mental health, mental illness remains a stigmatized category, broadly used to denigrate certain groups and often deployed as an explanation for violent acts. The boundary between mental health and mental illness, drawn by actors other than medical professionals, clearly delineates who is normal and who is not, creating an axis of inequality that intersects with other axes such as race and gender. The twenty-first century focus on mental health has not created universal acceptance but has instead contributed to social division.
