GDP as a Determinant of the Standard of Living

Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2026 in the subject Economics - Other, grade: Q1, , language: English, abstract: This study analyses the evolution of the monetary aggregates Monetary Aggregate M2 (M2) and public debt/Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratios in the United States and the Euro Area in the period 1999-2025, using time series normalized with base year 1999 = 100%. The quantitative analysis, based on official data from Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED), European Central Bank (ECB), Eurostat and the US Treasury, reveals surprisingly parallel dynamics between the two economies, with dramatic accelerations during the 2008 financial crisis and the 2020 pandemic crisis. The US M2 aggregate grew by 383.5% in 26 years (Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) 6.25%), while the Euro Area recorded an increase of 310.9% (CAGR 5.59%). The US Debt/GDP ratio more than doubled, rising from 59.3% to 122.0%, compared to more
contained growth in the Euro Area (from 71.6% to 88.5%). The most significant figure is the monetary explosion of 2020: US M2 increased by 25% in a single year (about $4,000 billion), highlighting the unprecedented impact of extraordinary Quantitative Easing (QE) policies. The analysis also documents the post-pandemic divergence in policy strategies: while the Euro Area has, since 2022, initiated a path of fiscal consolidation and aggressive Quantitative Tightening (QT), the United States maintains debt levels stably above 120% of GDP. The results suggest that the monetary and fiscal policy choices of the 2020-2023 period have rewritten macroeconomic paradigms, with profound implications for the sustainability of sovereign debt and global financial stability. The study also provides empirical validation of the data through comparison with OECD
and scenarieconomici.com sources, confirming an accuracy of 93.75% (15 out of 16 values within a 5% tolerance threshold).

A comprehensive look at inequalities and why they matter There is a widespread sense throughout the developed world that progress towards a better society has stalled. Many countries, including the UK, have experienced persistent economic stagnation accompanied by declining trust in institutions. Governments are struggling to respond not only to traditional economic problems but also to newer challenges posed by climate change, migration and technological change. Challenging Inequalities, written by Paul Johnson and coauthors, drawing on the findings of the six-year IFS Deaton Review, connects these conditions to inequality—inequality not just of income and wealth but of health, political participation and opportunity. It not only offers a detailed analysis of the different forms of inequalities but also an in-depth consideration of why inequalities matter, how they have changed and what can, or should, be done about them. The book explains the enduring effects of early life experiences and education and examines the trends in employment and earnings over recent decades. It argues that economic stagnation since the financial crises of 2008–2009 has exposed inequalities originating in the 1980s. Not only have incomes stagnated, but so has progress towards reducing health inequalities and dealing with inequalities across gender, ethnicity, geography, age and educational level. The combination of earnings inequality and economic stagnation has led to the growing importance of wealth, the increasing concentration of economic power in an older generation and a decline in social mobility. Economic inequalities have also resulted directly in dangerous differences between regions and in political power across groups. The need to address inequality has never been more urgent. Challenging Inequalities offers a road map for how we have arrived at such a perilous spot—and how we can change course to achieve better outcomes for all.

Why do we use eighty-year-old metrics to understand today’s economy? The ways that statisticians and governments measure the economy were developed in the 1940s, when the urgent economic problems were entirely different from those of today. In The Measure of Progress, Diane Coyle argues that the framework underpinning today’s economic statistics is so outdated that it functions as a distorting lens, or even a set of blinkers. When policymakers rely on such an antiquated conceptual tool, how can they measure, understand, and respond with any precision to what is happening in today’s digital economy? Coyle makes the case for a new framework, one that takes into consideration current economic realities. Coyle explains why economic statistics matter. They are essential for guiding better economic policies; they involve questions of freedom, justice, life, and death. Governments use statistics that affect people’s lives in ways large and small. The metrics for economic growth were developed when a lack of physical rather than natural capital was the binding constraint on growth, intangible value was less important, and the pressing economic policy challenge was managing demand rather than supply. Today’s challenges are different. Growth in living standards in rich economies has slowed, despite remarkable innovation, particularly in digital technologies. As a result, politics is contentious and democracy strained. Coyle argues that to understand the current economy, we need different data collected in a different framework of categories and definitions, and she offers some suggestions about what this would entail. Only with a new approach to measurement will we be able to achieve the right kind of growth for the benefit of all.
