Most of us think about money every day. But how many of us know how it actually works?Every morning, someone unassumingly types numbers into a spreadsheet, hits enter and creates millions of pounds. Somewhere deep underground, a machine most of us will never see props up the entire British economy. And hidden in a vault nearby are individual banknotes worth £100 million each. These are just some of the surprising truths about how money works. The Bank of England know more about the money system than most - after all, it is their job to keep it running smoothly. Now, for the first time, two of its economists take you deep into their vaults to tell you the inside story of money. They explain how ordinary banks are able to create money from scratch, and what stops that descending into chaos. They explore what causes inflation and why one country tried to solve rising prices by asking its citizens to cut all banknotes in half. They uncover how a baby hippo briefly became a global currency, and what that says about the future of money. And they reveal what goes on inside the Bank of England during a banking crisis, and why it means your money is safer now than ever before.Along the way, they explore how money is changing today - and what new technologies like crypto mean for its future. The result is a lively and surprising guide to how money is supposed to work, what happens when it doesn't, and where it might be going next.

A critical history of the US dollar's dominance in the world economy--and what has kept China's currency from overtaking it. The dollar is the primary currency of the world economy. With China now rivaling the United States on the world stage, a critical question hangs in the balance: will the Chinese renminbi challenge the status of the dollar and, in doing so, deprive America of its "exorbitant privilege"? In GreenbackEmpire, Ho-fung Hung offers a powerful account of why, even as American shares of global production, ownership, and trade continue to decline, its currency has retained the support of governments and investors around the world. For six decades, Hung shows, the dominance of the dollar has rested on the security umbrella that the US offers to the world's wealthiest countries--including oil producers. To these countries, support for the value of the dollar is tantamount to maintaining US protection. While China has become a serious geopolitical and economic rival to the US, the Chinese state's airtight control of its financial system has delayed the free trading of the renminbi, limiting the currency's internationalization. In short, the same strategy that engineered growth in China's economy is restraining its currency's rise in opposition to the dollar. Hung's Greenback Empire is an essential history of the dollar's prowess, indispensable for understanding the future of the global monetary system.

The book is replete with over 150 examples and solved exercises - drawn from real life banking - and these will give the reader a firm grasp of the subject. The book caters to beginners in foreign exchange, while at the same time unravelling many mysteries for those who are already well conversant in the field and are presently working in the forex area. In addition to being suitable for bankers and students of international finance, the book also serves as an explainer for exporters and importers - for whom exchange rates have profound importance in their day-to-day businesses.

A revelatory history of how the Federal Reserve finances American power. Central banks, we are told, are economic superpowers that must remain independent of modern democratic governments. The US Federal Reserve's presumed insulation from politics affords it autonomy and credibility to control inflation and promote economic stability--or so the story goes. In The Fiscal Fed, Will Bateman offers a deeply sourced, empirical history that shows the Fed's primary function is actually, and has always been, fiscal--sustaining the market for Treasury borrowing that makes up the difference between federal spending and federal revenue. Bateman combs Fed meeting transcripts, staff notes, financial accounts, and legal documents to trace loans and public-debt purchases since the central bank's founding. The result is a milestone work that reveals how, for most of the Fed's history, its transactions were aimed at government financing--either by providing cheap credit to close budget gaps or by manipulating yields on government debt. The Fed's support for government finance is a feature, not a bug, of American economic institutions.

Central banks now stand between societies and collapse, but are they still democratic? Two decades of financial crises have dramatically expanded central banks' powers. In 2008, and then again in 2020, unelected banking officials found themselves suddenly responsible for the public welfare--not just because it was necessary but based on an idea that their independence from political systems would insulate them from the whims of populism. Now, as international crises continue and the scope of monetary interventions grows in response, these bankers have become increasingly powerful. In Balance of Power, economist and historian Éric Monnet charts the rise of central banks as the nominally independent--but unavoidably political--superpowers of modern societies. This trajectory, Monnet argues, is neither inevitable nor unstoppable. By embracing the political natures of today's central banks, we can construct systems of accountability for how they interact with states and societies. Monnet shows that this effort will do more than guard against unjust power; it will put the banks to work for greater, more democratic ends. With existential challenges looming and the work of the Federal Reserve and European Central Bank more important than ever, Balance of Power offers a trenchant case for what this century's central banks can--and must--become.
