Rethinking Asia and International Relations

East Asia is shaped as much by identity-based dynamics as by material forces. This book examines how the evolving state identities of China and Japan have interacted with the regional order and its prospects for both cooperation and conflict.While identity-based dynamics have long been recognised as enduring features by observers of East Asia, conventional accounts often emphasise the absence of a shared identity, persistent historical grievances, and nationalism-fuelled territorial disputes-particularly between China and Japan-as key obstacles to regional cooperation. This volume instead offers a state identity politics approach that moves beyond viewing the 'ghosts of the past' as fixed constraints. It focuses on how domestic actors in both countries construct and mobilise state identities, how domestic politics interact with international relations, and how these identities shape regional order. This book provides a comprehensive review of Chinese trademark law, policy and practice with the updated materials since the reform of Chinese trademark law in 2019. It provides a clear explanation and insightful opinions on Chinese law from a comparative and international law perspective. It draws on the author's 16 years of experience in teaching, researching and practicing trademark law as a scholar in a prestigious Chinese law school and as an expert consultant to the Trademark Office, courts and companies. The book analyses trademark registration (conditions and procedures) and protection (scope of rights and enforcement procedures) with theoretical criticism and practical advice. On trademark registration, it has paid special attention to two prominent issues of interest to researchers and practitioners: problems in trademark registration due to the Chinese Trademark Office's strict examination of distinctiveness, public order and morality, and the risk of conflict with earlier trademarks, and difficulties in combating trademark squatting. On trademark protection, it has presented the constant and productive reforms of the Chinese trademark law, which strengthen the sanction of trademark infringement and the policies that motivate judges to significantly increase damages to trademark owners. The book has also described the characteristics of the Chinese administrative and judicial systems, where applicable, in which trademark law is applied. This book explores the concept of ‘dissent’ within the realm of art and cultural heritage through a rich and multidisciplinary lens. It investigates how dissent shapes the very definition of cultural heritage and the systems that govern cultural heritage, drawing primarily on social science perspectives. Combining methodologies from law and economics with insights from museology, art history, and postcolonial studies, the volume offers a unique perspective on how disagreement and contestation can redefine cultural value and authority.
The first part, “Dissent as Contestation,” starts from the observation that the very value of cultural heritage has always been contested. It focuses on cultural heritage found in public spaces, where the contestation over its value is exacerbated. This raises questions concerning, for example, the subjects called upon to finance the preservation of their own cultural heritage and the creation of new cultural activities and, therefore, the relationship between public and private actors. The role of dissent, moreover, can play a major role – now more than ever – in the re-interpretation of values traditionally attached to specific cultural objects.
The second part, “Dissent as Reinvention,” addresses dissent-related practices. Practices that, through episodes of conflict and contrast, manage to create new methods and new procedures for the governance of heritage and cultural activities. The chapters cover specific case studies dealing with local experiences or specific media of expression and explore how dissent can lead to paradigm shifts. Moreover, they consider whether and how certain institutional bodies, such as international organizations or local policymakers, have (or have not) put in place mechanisms to accommodate, listen to, and reflect possible episodes of dissent among relevant stakeholders.

America's Neglected Protectionist Tradition offers the most comprehensive treatment of the American protectionist school of economic thought - an intellectual tradition which originated with the ideas of Alexander Hamilton and Tench Coxe, and was developed further by thinkers such as Friedrich List, John Rae, and Henry Charles Carey. This work provides the first systematic account of the philosophy and theory of the American protectionist tradition by drawing upon the full corpus of their literature, which includes the writings of nearly seventy statesmen and economists. 
In reconstructing their system of theory, America's Neglected Protectionist Tradition demonstrates that the American protectionists represented a coherent and systematic school of economic thought, and one that rivalled their English classical counterparts. Against the conventional literature on the topic, which treats American Protectionist thought as merely an adaption of English classical economics, this work demonstrates that the American Protectionists developed a distinctive approach to economics. Not only did they differ from the Classicals on the policy recommendations concerning international trade, they rejected basic assumptions of the English classicals which remain foundational to contemporary economic analysis. Central to the thinking of the American protectionist tradition is the idea of the economy as dynamic and inventive. Rather than seeing scarce resources as placing fixed limits on economic progress, the American protectionists looked to invention, human ingenuity, and the diversity of talents and aptitudes as the means of forging the wealth of nations. Among other areas of economic analysis, this work explores the American protectionists' support for economic diversification, which stands in contrast with free trade theory's emphasis on specialisation. By challenging the Classical view that individuals represent homogeneous and uniform factors of production, the protectionists saw mankind as possessing unique talents, aptitudes and dispositions. Protected diversification was thus necessary to allow individuals to exercise these unique qualities. By recovering this neglected tradition, this work not only fills a significant gap in the history of economic thought but also provides valuable historical perspective on contemporary debates regarding trade and industrial policy, technological innovation and economic development.
