Wir schreiben das Jahr 1492. Christoph Kolumbus hat endlich die nötigen Geldmittel und stellt sich eine Mannschaft (auch vier Deutsche und ein bekannter Österreicher sind an Bord) zusammen. Am 3. August sticht er mit seinem Flaggschiff Santa Maria und den beiden Karavellen Niña und Pinta in See. 
Die Reise gestaltet sich schwieriger als gedacht, ein Bruch des Steuerruders der Pinta und Ausbesserungen des Großsegels der Niña erzwingen einen einmonatigen Aufenthalt auf der Kanareninsel La Gomera.
