Critical Memory Studies

This open access book proposes slow memory as a new framework for understanding how remembrance operates across time, urging scholars and practitioners to resist the acceleration that characterizes both contemporary scholarship and public memory cultures. The authors explore the theoretical foundations of slow memory in relation to environmental humanities and Indigenous studies, emphasizing themes of deep time, intergenerational justice, and contested memory regimes. The collection focuses on the fields of environment, (de)industrialization, welfare, politics, and conflict to examine how gradual transformations impact the present through remembrance practices at different tempos. It advocates for a deceleration of scholarly and commemorative practices to develop ethical, sustainable, and inclusive engagements with the past. By foregrounding slowness as a conceptual and methodological tool, and slow memory as a "connective concept," this book offers a vital framework for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to rethink the temporalities of remembrance in an era of rapid transformation. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. This publication is based upon work from COST Action CA20105 on Slow Memory, supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). COST is a funding agency for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and enable scientists to grow their ideas by sharing them with their peers. This boosts their research, career and innovation.

Beautiful. Beloved. Hunted. The extraordinary life and death of Diana, as told by her brother, Charles. 'Head-spinning, fascinating, truly touching, devastating. A portrait of Diana that is affectionate, sad, and lovely' Guardian'Explosive, devastating, astonishing, extraordinary' Daily Mail ***'When asked, 'What was it like, growing up with Diana?', my first thought is always, But I don't know what it was like not to grow up with her...' In September 1997, Charles Spencer stood in Westminster Abbey before a watching world and shared his grief at losing his beloved sister, Diana. Now, nearly thirty years later, he tells the astonishing story of his life with Diana and the tragic week of her death. In childhood, Charles and Diana, the youngest Spencers, were inseparable - secretly calling one another Duch and Carlos. As each other's closest confidantes, they roamed the family estate, endured extremely challenging boarding schools, survived terrifying nannies and helped each other through the agony of their parents' divorce.Yet everything changed when Diana married the Prince of Wales, now King Charles III, and overnight became a global icon. Charles saw his older sister serve the world's marginalized and relish being mother to her treasured sons. But, pursued by a barbaric press as her royal marriage crumbled, she was left desperately alone. Charles always tried to be there for Diana - until that black night in August, 1997.In Swan Song, Charles Spencer provides the most intimate, loving and honest portrait yet of his sister.*** 'Compelling, fascinating, a solemn act of brotherly devotion ' The Times 'A poignant, honest portrayal . . . and one that will endure' Daily Express 'Credible and candid and vitally it re-centres Diana, whom the Palace have been wiping from national memory for many years. I was moved to tears' Yasmin Alibhai-Brown, i 'A brotherly tribute to the People's Princess, no holds barred . . . Full of love and vengeance' New York Times 'Charles Spencer was there for all this history, indelibly present in one of the most iconic tableaux of the late 20th century. After holding back for so long, his memoir finally tells us what it was like' Tina Brown, Fresh Hell SubstackPraise for Charles Spencer's writing:'Top marks for its searing frankness, framed in wistfully beautiful prose' The Times'Acutely observant, his turn of phrase is often delightful' Daily Telegraph'A moving, heartbreaking memoir' Financial Times'A tour de force' Washington Post

Diana, my sister

Swan Song

ULRICH WICKERT

Imprinted traces literacy and Caribbean literary culture from the late nineteenth century to today. Imprinted is a history of literacy and the development of a literary culture in the Caribbean from the late 19th century to contemporary times. It explores the places and spaces of such a cultural journey, during and after the colonial period. Entwined within this critique is the story of the author's own reading history, from a child reader devouring the books (Black Power heroes and romance fiction) in her family home in Dominica to the concerns of a literary scholar of a digital age. A remarkable investigation full of personal reflection and awareness of the social, political and economic dynamics that shape Caribbean reading experiences.

**Longlisted for the Baillie Gifford Prize**'Andrea Wulf belongs to the small, splendid canon of writers unafraid to render fact with feeling' Maria Popova, creator of The Marginalian and author of FiguringAn inspiring biography of the remarkable naturalist, explorer and revolutionary, by the bestselling author of The Invention of Nature George Forster was a man out of time: he journeyed to the far reaches of the known world and challenged the worldviews of eighteenth-century Europe with radical ideas about equality and freedom. Celebrated during his lifetime, he knew Goethe, Benjamin Franklin, Mary Wollstonecraft and Alexander von Humboldt but has since been largely forgotten by history. The Traveller seeks to restore Forster as one of the great visionaries of his era. At the age of seventeen he joined Captain Cook's second voyage - an exploration of vast contrasts from the icy world of Antarctica to the tropical islands of the South Pacific. A brilliant mind driven by boundless curiosity, he studied the diverse nature, people and cultures he encountered and came back imbued with a deep belief in the equality of races. On his return he was feted in England, France, Germany and Poland, using his fame to advocate freedom and human rights and argue against empire, racism and slavery. He admired strong and educated women and was proud to have daughters. The book traces how - inspired by the French Revolution - he became a leader of the short-lived Republic of Mainz and was eventually forced into exile in Paris during the Reign of Terror.Following in Forster's footsteps from Europe to Tahiti, and drawing on a wealth of correspondence mostly unpublished in English, Andrea Wulf paints a portrait of a remarkable, passionate figure unbound by place, people or establishment. She vividly conveys his extraordinary quest to find what connects us rather than what sets us apart.

Christine Lagarde is a woman of firsts: first female head of the IMF, first female President of the ECB - and all without a classic career path through the world of finance. In her first autobiography, she recounts her rise, her successes and setbacks, and her fight against prejudice. It sheds light on the great crises of the global economy, her courageous decisions, and her distinctive perspective on power, emancipation, and change. Complemented by the voices of her most important companions, the result is a multifaceted portrait of a woman who breaks boundaries and consistently challenges the status quo.

From James B. Stewart, the New York Times bestselling co-author of Unscripted and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, a deeply reported investigation into Harvard University, what happened when the Trump administration declared war on it, and the epic battle between the old guard and new money for control over a fabled institution Harvard University, a symbol of excellence and prestige for nearly 400 years, has been under attack. The assault, by no means limited to the right-wing attacks on DEI, or the lawsuits brought by the Trump administration over billions of dollars in Federal funding, has exposed deep fault lines within academia and American society at large. The Harvard presidency is arguably the most powerful and influential position in academia, not least because it comes with huge sway over the university’s vast $57 billion endowment. Beginning with the controversial tenure of Lawrence Summers as president of Harvard, James Stewart goes behind the scenes with power brokers and students alike to reveal how Summers’s abrupt departure set the stage for a progressive backlash when Drew Faust was hired as his replacement, and for the highly symbolic choice of Claudine Gay as the university’s first Black president. After Hamas attacked Israel, Republican Congresswoman and Harvard graduate Elise Stefanik led a Congressional inquiry into antisemitism on campus. As the controversy intensified, Gay was accused of plagiarism and forced to resign. But these events were only the preamble to the multiple lawsuits the second Trump administration would file against Harvard in the years to come, forcing Harvard into the impossible position of trying to defend academic freedom at the risk of crucial funding. A propulsive, character-driven narrative, replete with bold-faced names, combining deep investigative reporting and breaking news, this will be the definitive account of an institution on the brink. Using Harvard as the prism, Stewart confronts some of the most entrenched and sensitive fault lines of our polarized age, as the countervailing forces of meritocracy, elitism, identity politics, and tradition bear down on higher education from all sides. At stake is not only the future of Harvard, America’s preeminent university, but the very idea of education itself, and the unending struggle for the soul of the nation.

*THE NO.1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER*Bill Gates is one of the most transformative figures of our age. In Source Code he takes us back to his beginnings. He describes with candour his childhood in Seattle, the centrality of family - his close relationship with his card-playing grandmother and his demanding but caring parents - his struggles to fit in, his rebelliousness, his first deep friendships and the impact of losing his closest friend. We see Gates's extraordinary mind developing, the restless teenager who discovered a love of coding and computing at the dawn of a new era and felt that 'by applying my brain, I could solve even the world's most complex mysteries'. We see the earliest signs of his phenomenal business acumen, which led him to drop out of Harvard at the age of 20 to devote all his energies to Microsoft, the company he started with his childhood friend Paul Allen. He writes about his first involvement with three Steves - Jobs, Wozniak and Ballmer - who would play a crucial role in so much that followed. The book ends in the late 1970s when Microsoft, still with only a dozen employees, signed its first deal with Apple. The deals would go on and Microsoft would grow unimaginably. Yet Gates never forgot his mother's reminder that he was merely a steward of any wealth that he gained. This warm and inspiring book, Bill Gates' origin story, allows readers to understand his energy and ambition - and to see how he sets himself in the world.
