Since the end of the Second World War, restitution in Germany - Wiedergutmachung - has been mainly understood as part of state or private law. This book offers a different approach, arguing that authors and artists have also taken up a responsibility for restitution. Deploying the literal translation 'making-good-again', this book focuses on the 'making' of law, literature and visual art to argue that restitution is a practice which is found in different genres, sites and temporalities. The practices of restitution identified are dynamic, iterative and incomplete: they are practices of failure. Nevertheless, in this book, the question of how to conduct restitution emerges as a material question of responsibility asked through the making of texts and objects in different genres, including law. The resulting text is a unique expansion and re-conceptualisation of the practices of jurisprudence, restitution and responsibility in the context of the aftermath in Germany. This book radically reforms the classical paradigm of international law. It proposes a novel theoretical framework of the 'separation of powers in a globalised democratic society', where both actors and norms are pluralised beyond a unitary and monolithic 'state' and international law as norms of, by, and for 'states'. The book applies this framework to holistically examine the interactions between human rights treaty organs - the European Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and the UN Human Rights Committee - and state organs, including parliaments, courts, administrative organs, and national human rights institutions. The book provides an innovative, original contribution to both the theory and practice of international human rights law.

From the rise of China as a technological superpower, to wars on its eastern borders, to the belief that the US is no longer a reliable ally, the European Commission sees the world as more unstable than at any other time in recent history. As such, the Commission has become the Geopolitical Commission, working to serve the interests of the Geopolitical Union. Central to many of these conflicts is technology - who produces it, where it is produced, and who controls it. These questions are central to the Commission's pursuit of digital/technological sovereignty, Europe's attempt to regain control of technology regulation. Focusing on topics such as setting technological standards, ensuring access to microchips, reining in online platforms, and securing rules for industrial data and AI, this book explores the EU's approach to lawmaking in this field; increased regulatory oversight and promotion of industrial policy at home, while exporting its rules abroad.

This multilayered work follows a group of Guantanamo detainees from a single Middle Eastern country, Kuwait, portraying their lives before their capture, to their experience at Guantanamo, to their ultimate release and the lives they have been challenged in remaking after returning home. It is an intimate look at real men held for years without charge and without hope. Eric L. Lewis has represented Guantanamo detainees for more than twenty years and he conducted the hearings that gained the release of the last two Kuwaiti 'forever prisoners.' As part of a committed team, he spent time with these men and their families, fighting to gain access to courts and navigating the politics and diplomacy of the Global War on Terror. As well as telling the story of his time with the Guantanamo detainees, Lewis also analyzes how Guantanamo has changed American law and culture, and how its legacy continues today.

Metzl has long been the forefront of a movement advocating for American gun reform as a matter of public health but in 2018 a racially charged mass shooting in Nashville led him on a path towards recognising the limitations of biomedical frameworks for fully diagnosing or treating the complexities of American gun politics. In What We've Become, Metzl looks at the cycle in which mass shootings lead to shock, horror, calls for action, and, ultimately, political gridlock, he explores what happens when violence is normalised as an acceptable trade-off for freedom. What We've Become points to mass shootings as a symptom of America's unresolved national conflicts, and sets out a path of alliance forging, racial reckoning and political power brokering that America must take to put things right.
