Nordic Art in the Transcultural Present

Drawing on themes from Africa Yearbook chapters on Madagascar, this book charts the country's journey through some of its most turbulent years. Democracy, marked by uneven progress, has weathered repeated elections, an unconstitutional government overthrow, rising social movements, and shifting domestic and international alliances. During this time, Madagascar witnessed extraordinary per capita international donor investment, signaling both global interest and urgent need. Yet the country remains a paradox: a place where solid institutions and pockets of economic growth persist alongside some of the world's deepest poverty and most fragile democratic practices. It is a story of resilience, contradiction, and transformation.

The History and Theory of International Law

A Sociology of International Investment Law applies methods associated with the sociologist Max Weber to illuminate aspects of international investment law - a regime made up of thousands of treaties that protect foreign investors from state action diminishing the value of their investments. By applying many of Weber's key themes associated with legal modernity - legitimacy, rationality, domination, bureaucracy, and charisma - the book conscripts tools of analysis that enable the testing of many of investment law's operating assumptions. A Sociology of International Investment Law Law is premised on the belief that theory informs practice and that enlisting aspects of Weber's work illuminates the contemporary practice of, and debates over, international investment law. Utilizing Weber's themes and methods, results in a deeper appreciation of the connections of international investment law has with classical social theory. The book also reveals how the field fails to measure up to many of the analytical challenges that Weber's sociological interventions provoke. This book offers an exploration of the commonalities, differences, and blind spots shared by this relatively new international legal field with one of the most influential theorists of modernity. Jana Schulz (b. 1984; lives and works in Berlin) initiates encounters on film and in photographs in which intimacy emerges in the process of shooting: performative, shared, situational. She observes structures and dynamics within social groups, enriching her documentary approach by integrating fictional elements.&nbsp; 
Schulz's works look for forms of tenderness, for instants in which something not yet solidified reveals itself; in that spirit, her most recent photographic series raises questions about masculinity on the threshold of adult life. At its center stands a portrait of the South African Bathenkosi Sphesihle Luphalule, his play with common role models and the search for his true self. In the post-9/11 security environment, the use of genetic data has extended shifted from that of evidence to intelligence. Central to this shift, Erin Kruger argues here, has been a radical reconfiguration of genetic imaging systems. And it is in the context of this shift that she analyses the role of the image in determining the scientific validity - and with it the legitimacy - of genetic data. How, she asks, is genetic imagery attributed meaning? How does it come to be understood as truthful and trustworthy? Kruger draws upon the insights of recent work in Science and Technology Studies to address these questions in the context of various legal and other institutional agendas, technologies, discourses and controversies.
