For American workers, the social contract is broken. This book gives a firsthand view of where the breaks occurred, and a prescription for rebuilding it to give workers their due. With AI making the decisions and CEOs and moguls making the money, sometimes it seems that most workers today might as well be drones. If not for a long string of missed opportunities over the last 50 years, it might have been different. In Roads Not Taken, Thomas Kochan reviews the turning points where the social contract fractured and broke, reducing workers’ voices as well as their compensation, benefits, and status. And in the lessons learned from these historical examples, he identifies the foundation for building a new labor relations system that ensures workers will share in the benefits from AI and puts America on course for an innovative and durable social contract at work. José Rente Nascimento is a Brazilian scholar who specializes in forestry, agriculture, and environmental economics. He has supported development and conservation projects throughout Latin America while working for international institutions, governments, and NGOs. A former senior natural resource specialist at the Inter-American Development Bank, Nascimento is a forester and holds an MP and a PhD from the University of Minnesota.

What is a drug? The answer seems so obvious that the question is hardly worth asking. We can all agree that cocaine is a drug, or methamphetamine, or cannabis. But what about sugar? Caffeine? That heavy, sleepy feeling you get after eating a big portion of turkey at Thanksgiving? The extremes of experiences like sex and exercise or love and grief are created by the same consciousness-altering neurochemicals responsible for the highs and lows of a cocaine binge. What about your phone, or your toddler's iPad—can we be addicted to technology? Does using these devices make us "high"?
Drugs are slippery objects, difficult to define. Some make us feel good, others make us ill. Some take the form of pills, plants, or powders. Others, like the runner's high, require no physical substance at all. Much of what we think we know about drugs comes from a handful of well-used cultural narratives: drugs are either a public health menace, a social issue to be fixed, or an age-old criminal and legal problem. The rebels among us might even think of drugs as tools for creativity and artistic production. But despite the profound role drugs have played in human history and society, we rarely give any thought to what drugs actually are, and more importantly, what they do.

How the social organization of Europe and China shaped their divergent economic and political trajectories over the past millennium In the eleventh century, when Europe was still backward and poor, China was a rich and sophisticated civilization. Yet Europe became the birthplace of democracy and the Industrial Revolution, driving the Great Enrichment, while China stagnated until the end of the twentieth century and was always ruled by autocracies. Two Paths to Prosperity traces the emergence of two very different social organizations in premodern China and Europe--the clan and the corporation--showing how they were key factors in the economic and political divergence of these two great civilizations. Agricultural Statistics is published each year to meet the diverse need for a reliable reference book on agricultural production. It covers an extensive list of issues related to agriculture including livestock, farm values, crop production, and foreign trade. The estimates for crops, livestock, and poultry made by the U.S. Department of Agriculture are prepared mainly to give timely current state and national totals and averages. They are based on data obtained by sample surveys of farmers and of people who do business with farmers. The survey data are supplemented by information from the Census of Agriculture taken every five years. Being estimates, they are subject to revision as more data become available from commercial or government sources. Unless otherwise indicated, the totals for the United States shown in the various tables on area, production, numbers, price, value, supplies, and disposition are based on official estimates.
