This Green Unpleasant Land
This is a story of ordinary families and communities decimated by the monetarist policies of the Thatcher government and its economic and political choices that shifted the blame onto the poorest in society. It is about the destruction of the industrial heartland the bedrock of UK industry. It is about the closure of factories, ship yards and coal pits. It is about the deliberate cuts to public expenditure that condemned thousands upon thousands of building workers to the dole queue. It about the spectre of penury and mass unemployment at a level not seen since the 1930s. It is about the 3.3 million (official figures) thrown onto the scrap heap. It is about the farce of the adult and youth training schemes it is about the quest to smash the trade union movement. It is about spreading the seeds of division and the hardship and stark realities of life in 1980s breadline Britain
