The Wild Rose

A Novel

Penitence

Law and Philosophy Library

In this book, John Finnis provides a virtually unparalleled, in-depth assessment of Leon Peträycki’s work by a Western scholar. In the opening chapter, Finnis takes up the challenge of reading Peträycki not simply as a historical curiosity of Eastern European jurisprudence but as a thinker whose wide-ranging and ambitious ideas continue to spark debate today. He critiques not only Peträycki’s non-standard “economic analysis of law,” which differs markedly from the Chicago School model (not to mention from Guido Calabresi’s and Pietro Trimarchi’s versions), but also many other aspects of Peträycki’s various contributions to jurisprudence. These include, above all, his legal-realistic but nonetheless appreciative treatment of the natural-law tradition(s), which makes Peträycki both distinctive and difficult to classify in terms of standard schools of thought.
Finnis’ essay is followed by nine further contributions. Written by scholars from different traditions and standpoints, they criticize, reassess, and elaborate upon Finnis’ arguments, creating a rich and multi-voiced dialogue. The volume concludes with Finnis’ own, extensive “concluding reflections,” in which he directly responds to his fellow contributors, clarifying his original questions and replying to the challenges raised in their chapters.
This unique volume showcases Finnis’ insights, while enabling his interlocutors to highlight the depth and complexity of both Finnis’ and Peträycki’s thought, as well as broader issues – more relevant now than ever – such as the differences between Catholic natural law, Orthodox natural law, and Peträycki’s atheistic, humanistic, anti-speciesist ideal of substituting love for law and morality alike.

'That rare treasure, a perfect novel' TIME A name is the first story that attaches itself to a life. Consider mine: Stanley Alban Marriott Obeysekere. It tells of geography, history, love and uncertainty. Stanley Obeysekere, a wealthy lawyer in colonial Ceylon, is a staunch believer in British justice. When the murder of a tea planter baffles the island, he seizes the chance to solve the case, securing fame as 'our Sherlock Holmes'. But his triumph comes at a price. With devastating precision, Michelle de Kretser traces the disintegration of a man, a family and a society as change arrives and the empire crumbles. A dazzling and savage novel.

It's time to shed the beauty myth and find a new freedom. In this powerful and precise book, Saskia Alais examines how we originated harmful beauty ideals and the many ways in which we continue to perpetuate them. Unpicking decades of harmful expectation, confused politics and false empowerment, BOMBSHELL throws a long overdue challenge at the media and beauty industry, exposing the sinister facts that see Western beauty standards affect every aspect of women's lives - from employment and class relations to dating and sexual violence.Featuring the voices of women from all corners of society and interviews with high-profile cultural figures, BOMBSHELL dissects popular contemporary conversation around women and their bodies, ultimately showing how we can detonate the system that does us damage.

An in-depth exploration of the network of agencies involved in policing child pornography—and what the future of security and care looks like. Facing the Child investigates the technocratic expertise in the policing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mitali Thakor argues that CSAM has come to be framed as primarily a digital problem, to be resolved digitally, thereby unleashing a new form of corporatized policing helmed by global technology companies. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on 4 years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book argues that in the 2010s, a network of technology companies, NGOs, and law enforcement created the notion of a “virtual child” in need of techno-solutionist saving to justify a vast expansion of surveillance technologies. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.

How the social organization of Europe and China shaped their divergent economic and political trajectories over the past millennium In the eleventh century, when Europe was still backward and poor, China was a rich and sophisticated civilization. Yet Europe became the birthplace of democracy and the Industrial Revolution, driving the Great Enrichment, while China stagnated until the end of the twentieth century and was always ruled by autocracies. Two Paths to Prosperity traces the emergence of two very different social organizations in premodern China and Europe--the clan and the corporation--showing how they were key factors in the economic and political divergence of these two great civilizations. In this landmark book, three leading economists offer a bold new account of why Europe and China evolved along such different trajectories. In the early Middle Ages, public goods like risk sharing, religious worship, education, and conflict resolution were provided by nonstate organizations in both societies. China increasingly relied on kin-based cooperation within clans, while weaker kinship ties in Europe gave rise to corporations such as guilds, universities, and self-governing towns. Despite performing similar functions, clans and corporations were built on very different principles--with lasting consequences until today. Providing a novel answer to a fundamental question in economic and political history, Two Paths to Prosperity shows how extended kinship in Chinese society facilitated the consolidation of autocracy and hindered innovation and economic development, and how corporations in Europe influenced emerging state institutions and set the stage for the Industrial Revolution.

What lies underneath digital platforms—their invisible architecture and governance that determine everything visible. Every time you unlock your phone, stream a show, or start your car, you’re entering a world shaped by thousands of engineering decisions you’ll never see. Most platform conversations fixate on their visible canopy—business models, user experience, competitive strategy—the “leaves,” in a sense. Platforms by Amrit Tiwana excavates their roots. The book begins with a simple DNA test that separates authentic from faux platforms, then traces the forces turning tractors, pacemakers, and elevators into platforms. Using the platform trinity, the author explores principles behind why platforms behave so differently, why superior technology doesn’t always win, and why—unlike products that reach a final form—platforms never stop evolving. From there the book explains platforms’ two hidden root systems: The first system, architecture, shows how Lego-like “modular” design, frozen interfaces, and prefab building blocks let thousands of outsiders contribute pieces that snap into colossal systems. The second system, governance, describes where architecture confronts human behavior. Elegant architecture flails with poor governance, so both demand discipline.

So when she meets Luke—the man of her mother’s dreams—marriage suddenly doesn’t seem so crazy. But none of Ophelia’s obsessive scrolling on wedding forums can prepare her for the nightmare of planning her own. Why is her mother-in-law going crazy over every detail? Why is Luke’s family so eager to host the wedding in their vineyard’s ancient chapel? And what exactly will Ophelia have to sacrifice if she and her mother both hope to survive her special day? Why Big Labor moved to the right— and the fight ahead for the left to win back America’s working class Unions helped construct the American middle class, defeat Jim Crow, and advance progressive rights, but in Trump’s America, the labor movement is changing. In Big Labor's Big Shift, journalist Nathan Bomey explores how Big Labor and the working class are no longer an automatic ally of the American left. Fueled by decades of economic decline, political disillusionment, and cultural disenfranchisement, new politically nebulous and economically populist leaders in the movement are building a powerful new movement based on class warfare that prizes wage and benefit gains over traditional progressive priorities. Through original reporting and first-hand interviews, Bomey traces key events that have led to this political shift. Bomey reveals:

At the Teamsters, president Sean O’Brien is cozying up to Donald Trump and blasting Democrats as tools of big business, even showing up at the Republican National Convention to deliver his message.

At the United Auto Workers, president Shawn Fain is seizing an opportunity to break the free trade consensus in Washington. The devout Christian, who wields religious rhetoric from the stump, is aligning with the Trump White House on tariffs and blasting Democrats for aggressively pursuing electric vehicles to fight climate change.

Bomey shows how the two interconnected phenomena represent a massive political realignment—not just along cultural and nationalism lines, but of the working class itself away from its historic roots in the Democratic party. Urgent and compelling, Big Labor's Big Shift encapsulates the fight for the soul of the union movement.
