Nelson L: The Test Called Living

The Test Called Living

Why No Single Score Can Measure a Human Life

Was uns ausmacht

Die DNA des Ostens

Over the past two decades, Latin American politicians and activists have reckoned with their nations' histories of racism, forced displacement of native peoples, and inequality by acknowledging Indigenous communities as peoples preexisting the modern states. In Argentina-a nation long fixated on presenting itself as "white" and "European"-this shift has been dramatic. After decades of erasure and racism toward Indigenous peoples, Argentinian civil society is identifying Indigenous groups as not just an element from the past, but as nations central to the country's culturally plural and multiracial identity.

In Urban Indigenous Assemblages, Ana Vivaldi considers how Argentina's urban Indigenous population fits into this recent political and social movement. To do this, she focuses on how the Qom Indigenous people-whose traditional territories are in northern Argentina-have moved to Buenos Aires, made homes in shantytowns alongside other migrants, and remade urban space by building Indigenous lives in the city. Starting from a Qom barrio in Greater Buenos Aires, Vivaldi traces how Qom peoples' travels to rural communities and movement across the city create complex networks and produce an urban life always in connection to other places. She argues that urban racialized indigeneities represent sites of contradictory relations visible and invisible to state actors and hypervisible to development agencies, as the Qom are expected to prove their authenticity and remove themselves from important relationships with nonwhite neighbors to access rights and recognition.

Based on eighteen months of fieldwork, this book analyzes the historical process that created the barrio: the constant remaking of this Indigenous space in interaction with state institutions and NGOs, the links between the barrio and northern Argentina through travels "far out" to rural communities in the Chaco, and the expansion of "Indigenous territories" beyond bounded location.

The Psychology of Revolution is a social psychology classic text by Gustave Le Bon that deals with the The Psychology of Revolution and contains the following excerpt:

The present age is not merely an epoch of discovery; it is also a period of revision of the various elements of knowledge. Having recognised that there are no phenomena of which the first cause is still accessible, science has resumed the examination of her ancient certitudes, and has proved their fragility. To-day she sees her ancient principles vanishing one by one. Mechanics is losing its axioms, and matter, formerly the eternal substratum of the worlds, becomes a simple aggregate of ephemeral forces in transitory condensation.

Los!' Heike Geißler

Über unsere schwindelerregende Gegenwart

Wer jetzt nicht lost ist, ist verloren

In Shock and Yawn, Megan Sibbett confronts state-sanctioned, mundane violence committed in the name of protection and argues that queer storytelling is an ideal avenue for recognizing, theorizing, and subverting it: Through queer stories, we have a direct window into the real-world ramifications of violence that purports to be for the public good. This violence, reinforced and normalized through surveillance campaigns, failure-to-protect laws, border policies, and government messaging, is obscured by both its banality and its benevolent veneer, in which children, or imagined children, are central to its logic of protection.

Building on queer theorists' critiques of intimate and administrative violence, especially Gloria Anzaldúa's "intimate terrorism," Sibbett develops methodologies for conceptualizing and subverting violence aimed at queer, racialized, and gendered bodies in this era of surveillance and increasing authoritarianism. Sibbett addresses book bans, anti-trans legislation, idealized histories of westward expansion, and more, examining materials that include public service announcements, advertising, social media, news reports, poems, interviews, and novels. In so doing, she demonstrates the crucial role queer testimonies-and queer histories and queer futures-play in revealing systemic violence and illuminating the transformative potential of everyday resistance.

A long-overdue analysis of how Black lesbians have asserted their lived experience through creative practice, pushing back against heteropatriarchal systems that deny them visibility.

"We Must Document Ourselves Now" examines the essential but oft-ignored importance of Black lesbian literature and film in queer literary and film histories, arguing that Black lesbian cultural texts reflect creators' lived experiences and resist the heteropatriarchal systems that deny Black lesbians visibility in popular culture. Stephanie Andrea Allen contends that these texts have three goals: to lay bare the experiences of Black lesbians in a raced, gendered, classed, and homophobic society; to challenge the notion that claiming Black lesbian identity is marginal or forbidden; and to take care of Black lesbians by bearing witness to their experiences through creative practice.

Insisting that Black feminist creative practice is an integral form of self and community care, Allen weaves analysis of cultural output spanning key sociocultural moments from 1974 to 2020 with interviews with Black lesbian cultural workers. "We Must Document Ourselves Now" examines the Black Arts / Black Power movement, the "boom" in lesbian and gay publishing, the so-called golden era of Black film, and twenty-first-century visual media to demonstrate how representations of Black lesbians, or lack thereof, were vital to constructing a cultural canon that focused on illuminating Black lesbian experiences in the United States.

The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State is an 1884 philosophical treatise by Friedrich Engels. It is partially based on notes by Karl Marx to Lewis H. Morgan's book Ancient Society (1877). The book is an early historical materialist work and is regarded as one of the first major works on family economics.

The writing of The Origin of the Family began in early April 1884, and was completed on 26 May. Engels began work on the treatise after reading Marx's handwritten synopsis of Lewis H. Morgan's Ancient Society; or, Researches in the Lines of Human Progress from Savagery, Through Barbarism to Civilization, first published in London in 1877. Engels believed that Marx had intended to create a critical book-length treatment of the ideas suggested by Morgan, and aimed to produce such a manuscript to fulfill his late comrade's wishes

Plato's Apology - A Riveting Defense of Philosophy and the Pursuit of Truth
Step into the courtroom of ancient Athens and witness a moment that forever shaped the course of Western thought. Plato's "Apology" is not an apology in the modern sense but a powerful and eloquent defense of philosophy, virtue, and the examined life, as spoken by Socrates himself.

In this timeless dialogue, Socrates stands trial, accused of corrupting the youth and challenging the gods of Athens. Armed only with his words, he confronts his accusers with sharp logic, unyielding honesty, and a fearless pursuit of truth. His defense transcends the courtroom, posing questions that still resonate: What does it mean to live a good life? Is it better to suffer injustice than to commit it? And how should we face death?

Perfect for readers who:

Seek to explore the foundations of philosophy and ethics
Are inspired by courageous thinkers who challenge the status quo
Enjoy timeless debates on morality, justice, and the human spirit
"Plato's Apology" is more than a historical account-it's a bold challenge to live authentically, question boldly, and think deeply. Whether you're a seasoned philosopher or just beginning your journey into the classics, this is a must-read that will ignite your mind and stir your soul.

Dare to embrace wisdom. Add this cornerstone of philosophical thought to your collection today.

Charlotte Perkins Gilman (née Perkins; July 3, 1860 - August 17, 1935), also known by her first married name Charlotte Perkins Stetson, was an American humanist, novelist, writer, lecturer, advocate for social reform, and eugenicist. She was a utopian feminist and served as a role model for future generations of feminists because of her unorthodox concepts and lifestyle. She has been inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. Her best remembered work today is her semi-autobiographical short story "The Yellow Wallpaper", which she wrote after a severe bout of postpartum psychosis.
