Omeljan Pritsak and the Intellectual Origins of the Ukrainian "Harvard Miracle"

Providing a systematic approach to English academic writing for the Humanities and Social Sciences, this book examines the word-formation patterns typical of discourse across distinct academic disciplines. Academic writing for research requires lexical sophistication, as it often addresses abstract concepts needing unique names, and a skilful use of complex derived/affixed words. The author provides data that allows for addressing the issues of expanding the learners' vocabulary, the development of vocabulary skills and the cultivation of derivational awareness in a targeted manner. The book consists of eight chapters. The first two provide a general overview of written academic English for research and publication purposes across the Humanities and Social Sciences and present the whole derivational system of contemporary English. English affixes are introduced through syntactic categories, such as derived nouns, derived verbs and derived adjectives. Chapters 3 to 5 contain the results of analyses conducted with the Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). In chapters 6 and 7, the methodology adopted shifts from automatic corpus search to manual data collection resulting from the close reading of specialist texts. Finally, chapter 8 shows how the analyses can be transferred to areas such as academic writing for research, writing for specific/professional purposes, creative writing, and translation. Offering rich insights into English derivation, this book will benefit researchers engaged in the Humanities and Social Sciences and appeal to linguists specializing in morphological theory, as well as language teaching professionals and EAP curriculum designers.

This book offers a multi-dimensional analysis of the experiences of faculty, students, and staff at a Canadian university that emphasizes international education, providing an ethnographic lens for understanding globalization and internationalization of higher education on a wider, global scale. How the West appropriated aspects of the eastern Roman empire while portraying it as inferior. Unveiling the ideological foundations of Byzantine studies, Phantom Byzantium is a pioneering survey of western European perceptions of the eastern Roman empire (also known as Byzantium) spanning late antiquity to World War II. Through ten chronological chapters, Anthony Kaldellis makes the case that western Europe gradually formed its identity by adopting prestigious cultural elements from the eastern empire but simultaneously portraying the east as inferior. The West modeled its Roman imperial style on Constantinople while minimizing the latter as Greek rather than Roman; appropriated a host of Christian traditions from the east while casting the east as schismatic, heretical, or treacherous; and, during the Renaissance, used classical Hellenic philology from Greek scholars before marginalizing them as unworthy bearers of that tradition. This orientalizing impulse worked to buttress western exceptionalism and resulted in the fictitious construction of "Byzantium" as Europe's evil doppelgänger, embodying the worst versions of traditions fundamental to European identity and casting the region as despotic, superstitious, and degenerate. Explaining the creation, history, and functions of the ideological construct of Byzantium in the western imagination and European self-fashioning, this book has critical implications for contemporary views of European history.

Born in Searchlight, Nevada, Harry Reid rose from a hardscrabble childhood to become one of the more powerful Capitol Hill leaders in US history as the Democratic Senate Majority Leader, and the most consequential elected figure in Nevada. He was, in his own words, willing to do what no one else would do in his Machiavellian pursuit of what he thought was best for his country and his party. Reid also became a formidable force at home, where he built a Nevada political machine that turned a red state blue and left a legacy on infrastructure and the environment—including squelching a planned nuclear waste dump—that is unmatched.
