Over the past 30 years, an ever-expanding community of global health actors have been intervening in the poorest parts of the world with the aim of combatting disease and improving health outcomes. While many global health programmes in the Global South have been successful in saving lives, their successes have often been compromised by poor coordination, inefficiency and a lack of alignment with national priorities.This book outlines the deep historical and political dimensions of this fragmentation, using rural Zambia as a case study. In the name of global health, different actors produce and circulate radically different stories about how to improve health. These narratives not only contribute to a fragmented landscape of health provision but also create more subtle and pervasive forms of fragmentation in the everyday lives of health workers, patients and government officials. Based on long-term ethnographic fieldwork in rural Zambia, this book examines three different global health interventions driven by differing stories of salvation, community and experimentation. Tracing the longer history of these stories, the book shows how they have failed to account for the realities of life in rural Zambia.Providing an innovative and nuanced analysis of global health that challenges the idea of fragmentation as simply a technical problem, this book will be an important read for researchers of global health and African studies.

For far too long, emerging markets and developing countries have played a subservient role in the global economy.This book builds a compelling case that a new settlement is needed, that rebalances power, well beyond existing arrangements such as the G20, and creates a shared vision to build economic growth and prosperity. The alternative is a world which lurches from crisis to conflict, jeopardising peace and prosperity. The very phrase "emerging markets" connotes that some countries are still developing and cannot compete with mostly Western global economic heavyweights. But the rise of China and India has not been isolated phenomena, with many other emerged countries also becoming confident about their place in the world: these are emerged markets, not the Global South or the Third World. Although these emerged countries now dominate global trade and investment and are the biggest champions of globalisation, their dramatic increase in economic weight has not led to a commensurate increase in clout and influence on the world stage, due to fundamentally unchanged World War II¿ra structures and apparatus.Written by a global economics insider who has been in the room in multilateral, national, and private sector organisations, this book argues that the developed and emerged worlds should be positioned as equal economic partners, requiring dramatic adjustments in perceptions and power on the part of the developed world. Though clear¿yed about the ills that continue to exist in the emerged world, Vasuki Shastry explains why rich countries should be willing and open to learn from their success stories. He presents a reimagined narrative for the global economy, with more collaboration, less finger¿ointing, and a confluence of equals in managing profound economic risks and opportunities, now and in the future. This book explores the crisis of neo-classical economic theory in an attempt to explain developments in the post-war period. It explores two important aspects: strengthening the tradition of classical political economy (CPE) that arose in response to various critiques of neo-classical economic theory and exploring the potential of CPE to deal with issues of development.The advantage of an alternative to mainstream economic theory is that it can explain value, distribution, and developmental issues of capitalist as well as non-capitalist economies around the world. The chapters in this volume-written by eminent economists in honor of Krishna Bharadwaj-present a critique of the structure of neo-classical theory in terms of the scarcity approach and go deeper into the failure of the determination of a uniform rate of profit and limited substitutions of labor and capital. The volume resurrects Sraffa's system of production determining prices and the rate of profit allowing the possibility of output dynamics to be dealt with separately. This book examines domestic fuelwood energy in Togo, with a focus on the capital, Lomé, from 1907 to 2025. Despite a 'butanisation' programme introduced in the 1980s to promote a gradual shift to liquefied petroleum gas, charcoal remains central to everyday cooking, particularly in Lomé. While fuelwood has been extensively studied by natural scientists as well as by so-called 'development' experts and state-led institutions, its historical dimensions have received little attention. This book offers the first dedicated historical analysis of Togo's fuelwood energy debate, focusing on Lomé.

Drawing on archival, oral historical, and visual sources, the study traces how social, economic, demographic, environmental, and political forces have shaped fuelwood energy production, commercialisation towards Lomé, and transformations in its use in the city. It also demonstrates how failed state interventions entrenched the dominance of fuelwood. By situating these processes historically, the book contributes to Togolese and West African historiography and lays the groundwork for comparative perspectives on fuelwood as a key domestic energy source in rapidly expanding West African capitals.
By the time this book is published, Hanza Diman is a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at the University of the Bundeswehr Munich. His current research examines the use of compact cassettes as a medium of communication between Beninese migrants in Côte d'Ivoire and their families in Benin from the 1970s to the early 2000s. He earned his PhD in 2021 from the University of Bayreuth's International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) and the Chairs of African History and Culture and of Technology in Africa. He is a graduate of the Institut de Relations Internationales et Stratégiques (iRiS-SUP, France). He also holds an MA in political history from the University of Bayreuth, with a study on the history of military coups d'état in Togo, and a BA in German philology from the University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin.
