Exploring National and Ethno-Religious Issues in the Prisons of Former Communist Eastern Europe

From Gulags to Europrisons

In the wake of World War I, the League of Nations and numerous investigative journalists went undercover to infiltrate sex-trafficking rings, conduct clandestine interviews with men and women participating in the vice trade, and identify the weak links in their operations in order to destroy this "global menace." These covert researchers discovered that the sex-trafficking industry was dominated not by vast underworld syndicates but by petty hustlers operating tiny fly-by-night operations. In Dealing in Human Flesh, Jeffrey S. Adler uses these unpublished field reports to map how small-time criminals conducted their sex-trafficking ventures. Adler shows that, despite policymakers' (and filmmakers') obsessions with the cartels and international crime rings of myth, it was in fact the business model of sex traffickers that narcotics and arms smugglers borrowed from to forge the surprisingly un-organized structure of early twenty-first-century human, cocaine, and weapons trafficking.

This book explores the role of architectural design in Colombia’s peacebuilding process following the 2016 Peace Agreement between the national government and the FARC-EP guerrilla. It examines how architecture can act as a catalyst for social transformation, territorial belonging, and autonomy in rural communities historically affected by the conflict. Through a qualitative, multi-method approach grounded in participatory action research, the study develops a theoretical model of architectural design for transitions, applies it to case studies in San José del Guaviare—a region emblematic of Colombia’s post-conflict dynamics—and formulates practical design tools to support peacebuilding. By analyzing projects such as the Development Programs with Territorial Focus (PDET) and the Territorial Spaces for Training and Reincorporation (ETCR), the research identifies both achievements and challenges in the implementation of built interventions. The findings highlight that effective architecture for peace must transcend technical problem-solving to integrate localized, participatory, and adaptive practices that strengthen community agency and ensure the sustainability of peace initiatives. Ultimately, the book positions architecture as an essential instrument in Colombia’s transition toward peace, emphasizing the need for context-sensitive methodologies that interweave design, social justice, and the non-repetition of violence.

This book examines the role of the prison in the commissioning and delivery of theatre practice. It draws attention to discourses of publicly acceptable arts and other mechanisms of ‘soft power’ which shape access to prison theatre. Each chapter utilises engaging storytelling methods based on the authors own experience as a prison theatre practitioner to illustrate theory. The book explores understandings of the value of arts in prison and discuss how, in a neoliberal society, people in prison can be conceptualised as ‘deserving’ or ‘undeserving’ of these practices. It examines the role of the arts organisation in designing and delivering commissionable arts practice and in caring for both practitioners and participants. It also discusses the role of the university and the facilitator in delivering work that balances the often-conflicting agendas of the prison, the arts organisation and the participants alongside their own aims within a context of precarious employment. Finally, it examines the experience of participating in prison theatre, exploring incidents of care, interdependency and collective joy within the prison and assessing how, through the delivery of short-term and insecurely funded arts projects, prison theatre can produce experiences of both hope and harm.
