But in some nations--including Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, India, Mexico, Türkiye, and the United States-- central banks have been blamed for focusing only on fighting inflation at the expense of economic growth.Central Bank Independence and Inflation argues that countries must continue supporting the independence of central banks to keep inflation in check and hence promote long-run economic growth. Jácome analyzes the evolution of CBI in Latin America from its creation in the 1920s to the present day. He warns against requiring central banks to print money to finance fiscal deficits, because it hinders economic growth. He creates a database of central bank independence to track its evolution and provides empirical evidence of a negative correlation with inflation. Despite the growing population and significant natural resources of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), economies in that region currently represent only 2% of global GDP. Finished goods are imported to Africa from the US, Europe, China and Japan, while commodities remain the primary export. Addressing this balance must be the primary focus of initiatives to foster economic growth and development across the region in the coming years. However, there is currently a lack of intellectual discourse that incorporates diverse firm-level and institutional-level theories, as well as the stakeholder perspective, to explain the transformation of Sub-Saharan Africa into a production economy. This two-volume edited work brings together scholars of business in Africa and economic transformation to discuss topics including the knowledge economy, inter-regional relations, supply chains, the informal economy, the service sector and more, creating a broad and probing analysis of Africa’s potential for transformation and strategies to achieve it.This first volume explores a multidisciplinary perspective on the transformation of SSA’s economies to production and export orientation, which entail: facilitating SSA’s economic transformation through regional relations; the role of SSA’s informal sector on regional relations and economic transformation; and the recommendations for economic transforming in SSA.  is a Senior Lecturer at Chrisland University, Nigeria. His research interests are Strategic Management, Operations Management, and Entrepreneurship in developing economies. He has received several local and international awards for his scholarship. He is the Chair of the International Centre for Policy Research and Industry Linkages (ICePRIL).
 Evans S. Osabuohien
 is a Professor of Economics at Covenant University, Nigeria, and the Founding Chair of DePECOS Institutions and Development Research Centre (DIaDeRC). He is the author of five books and over 210 articles. He has consulted for many international agencies such as ACBF, AERC, CODESRIA, IFPRI, J-PAL, UNU-WIDER, UNCTAD, among others. He is a member of many Professional Associations. He is a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (since 2012) and the Swedish Institute (since 2009), among many others. He is also a visiting professor at institutions within and outside Africa.

Economic Transformation in Sub-Saharan Africa, Volume I

An empirical analysis and new theoretical framework for understanding economic expectations and decision-making in different historical settings. Expectations play a crucial role in shaping economic behavior. But how are expectations actually formed, and how has this changed over time? The financial crisis of 2007–08 cast doubt on traditional theories of expectation formation, particularly the rational expectations framework. In Contingent Expectations, Alexander Nützenadel and Jochen Streb examine the ways that past experiences influence the economic expectations and decision-making of households, investors, and policymakers through history, and offer an alternative perspective. Combining a comprehensive empirical analysis of expectation formation from the eighteenth century to the present day with an assessment of the relevant economic theory, Nützenadel and Streb present a new theoretical framework, contingent expectations, for understanding economic expectation. Nützenadel and Streb show how economic actors developed new forecasting methods in response to rising uncertainty brought on by the Industrial Revolution, the expansion of global trade, financial market integration, and environmental crises. Tracing the evolution of economic theories on expectations, they find that when growing market volatility made forecasting more complex, economic agents often adapted with remarkable flexibility to changing circumstances. Challenging prevailing concepts of expectations, including rational choice and adaptive expectations, Nützenadel and Streb emphasize the heterogeneity of economic agents’ cognitive practices—in particular, the need to consider variation in information costs and historical experience. Expectation formation, they argue, is contingent on each individual’s current decision-making situation. Their account of the history of economic expectations has significant implications for current debates in economics.

Ronald Coase Institute Series on New Institutional Economics

Ronald Coase's Nobel work outlined gains by reducing transaction costs and promoting property rights and markets to confront externalities.
