Oskar Kokoschka und Egon Schiele sind die Lichtgestalten der Moderne in Österreich. Das Frühwerk der Künstler begründete den österreichischen Expressionismus, ihre Rivalität ist ebenso einzigartig wie ihre Netzwerke. Als Egon Schiele 1918 gerade 28-jährig starb und sein Versuch einer Annäherung an Kokoschka gescheitert war, hatte der Ältere noch sechs Lebensjahrzehnte vor sich, die er als international gefeierter Künstler verbringen durfte. Den Schatten Schieles wurde er aber nicht los – im Gegenteil. Anhand vielfältiger Werkreproduktionen und historischer Dokumente beschreibt der Band detailliert die Fehde, die diese beiden Ausnahmetalente ausfochten.

All the leading figures of French Impressionism found their way to the gallery of Paul Cassirer (1871–1926). Degas, Cézanne, Manet, Monet, and van Gogh-that these great names are found in so many collections today is largely thanks to Cassirer.
