The Straight Mind

An in-depth exploration of the network of agencies involved in policing child pornography—and what the future of security and care looks like. Facing the Child investigates the technocratic expertise in the policing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mitali Thakor argues that CSAM has come to be framed as primarily a digital problem, to be resolved digitally, thereby unleashing a new form of corporatized policing helmed by global technology companies. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on 4 years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book argues that in the 2010s, a network of technology companies, NGOs, and law enforcement created the notion of a “virtual child” in need of techno-solutionist saving to justify a vast expansion of surveillance technologies. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.

"Love is two minutes and fifty-two seconds of squelching noises" (Johnny Rotten, Rolling Stone)

The theory is that sex sells. And sex sells music.

The connections between music and sexuality are long-standing, 'rock'n'roll' itself being a slang term for sex, and there are many ways in which artists have explored sex and love through the medium of sound. Some of the records discussed in this book are experiments in expressing sexual desire through musical forms, mixing musical and sexual sounds. Others use sex purely as a marketing device or as 'whimsical entertainment' (sexualised images on LP covers, for example). Other records examine the politics of sexuality and/or offer a subversive take on the relationship between popular music and eroticism.

As an accessible form of entertainment, the LP was part of the 'democratization' of sexuality and erotica, something that was previously only available to the upper classes collecting erotic and pornographic materials on their many travels around the globe. Recorded music extended the reach of sexual content from literature, with books such as An ABZ of Love by Inge and Sten Hegeler (1963) or Alex Comfort's The Joy of Sex (1972), into the audio-visual realm.

The 'stirrings of the soul', the animation of the spiritual and the emotional, is what 'heavy conscious creation' is about and the sexual aspect of this is significant and profound.

Canadian electroacoustic composer Robert Normandeau once claimed that 'music, unlike other contemporary art forms, has hardly dealt with eroticism as a genre'. This book tries to fill in the gaps that this statement implies.

And the "two minutes and fifty-two seconds of squelching noises" that Johnny Rotten spoke about are here, sometimes literally, in musical form.

Thoughtful advice on how to leave academia gracefully and build your best life in retirement Retirement is one of the most challenging transitions in an academic's career, and it's natural to feel overwhelmed by the changes that lie ahead. This how-to guide explains how to structure your last few years of employment so that you retire well and feel good about it. Drawing on engaging personal stories from across academia, it shares concrete tips for letting go of one key phase of life and embracing the opportunity to reinvent yourself in the next. On Retiring makes the case that you have the ultimate say in charting your path through retirement, aging, and whatever comes next after academia--and provides the guidance you need to do so. Susan Shaw describes the lessons she learned from her own retirement experience and those of her colleagues, highlighting what worked and what didn't while paying special attention to the things that make the academic workplace unique. She outlines the four-year retirement plan she developed for herself and suggest some steps colleges and universities can take to honor the service of faculty members and help them to stay connected after retirement. Along the way, Shaw examines some of the downsides of aging in the academy and discusses relevant differences in academic experiences, covering topics such as gender, race, and sexuality. Focusing on so much more than just financial planning, On Retiring empowers you with social, psychological, and philosophical tools to leave the academy on your own terms and thrive in retirement.

As relevant now as when it was first published, this classic tale weaves a love story with the clash between the pursuit of profit and humanitarian ideals "[An] admirable story ... full of character and power" —Charles Dickens When her father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience, Margaret Hale is uprooted from her comfortable home in Hampshire to move with her family to the North of England. Initially repulsed by the ugliness of her new surroundings in the industrial town of Milton, Margaret becomes aware of the poverty and suffering of local mill workers and develops a passionate sense of social justice. This is intensified by her tempestuous relationship with the mill-owner and self-made man John Thornton, as their fierce opposition over his treatment of his employees masks a deeper attraction. In North and South Gaskell skilfully fused individual feeling with social concern, and in Margaret Hale created one of the most original heroines of Victorian literature. In her introduction Patricia Ingham examines Elizabeth Gaskell's treatment of geographical, economic and class differences, and the male and female roles portrayed in the novel. This edition also includes further reading, notes and a useful glossary.

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a conservation approach designed to ensure that any development or land-use change results in a measurable increase in biodiversity compared to the baseline conditions prior to the project. This concept transcends the traditional mitigation of environmental impacts, emphasising the enhancement and restoration of ecosystems and biodiversity. Biodiversity Net Gain Law and Practice provides a comprehensive understanding of the legal frameworks and policies that govern the protection and enhancement of biodiversity. This book explores the intersection of environmental, planning, and development laws and highlight how these regulations work together to ensure sustainable development and conservation efforts. It looks at key legislation such as the Planning Act 2008, the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, and the National Planning Policy Framework. Through case studies, legal analysis, and policy discussions, this book illustrates the practical applications and challenges of implementing biodiversity laws, and compares their success in the UK, Europe, India, Australia, Japan and South Africa. This title is included in Bloomsbury Professional's Environmental Law online service.

This open access book introduces the first systematic approach to the debate on the unity or fragmentation of practical reasoning and its profound implications for legal philosophy. Bringing together some of the foremost legal philosophers from the Hispanic-Latin world, the book presents a thoughtful dialogue with the Anglo-American literature, making it of interest to scholars from both cultural traditions. Although the topic is rarely discussed explicitly and systematically, it is pivotal to ongoing debates about legal normativity, the nature of law, legal authority, and the rationale behind legal decisions. This book fills this gap by providing a comprehensive perspective that illuminates the intersections between the philosophy of law and the philosophy of practical reasoning. It analyses law from the perspective of the agent and offers deep insights into critical issues in the field of law. The volume is divided into four parts. The 1st part addresses the question of the nature of reasons and the unity of practical and theoretical reasoning. The 2nd part deals with the question of whether practical reasoning works in a unified or fragmented way. The 3rd section examines the autonomy of legal normativity in relation to morality and other normative domains. In the 4th and concluding section, the authors analyse the implications of the thesis of the unity of practical reason for legal decision-making and the authority of law. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com.

Law and the Unity of Practical Reasoning

This fourth title in this innovative series establishes connections between jurisdictions which would not conventionally 'speak' to one another, on topics which would not otherwise have been discussed. Over four parts, it looks at questions of: trusts actors; trusts applications; trusts environments; and trusts futures. Chapters are co-written by two (or more) authors, to give a novel perspective on comparative trusts law. This approach allows for a rigorous, systematic exploration of the varied ways in which trusts law manifests across the Asia-Pacific region. An expert and welcome new addition to this leading book series in comparative private law.

A clear, nontechnical guide to why cryptocurrency exists, how it reshapes trust and money, and why it matters beyond speculation. How do we build trust in a digital world where institutions, platforms, and intermediaries increasingly mediate money, identity, and ownership? In Cryptocurrency and Blockchain, Marco Di Maggio offers an essential guide to cryptocurrencies and blockchains—two of the most misunderstood technological and economic transformations of the digital age. Rather than focusing on price charts, hype cycles, or programming details, Di Maggio explains why these technologies exist, what problems they attempt to solve, and why they matter for people who are not crypto insiders. Using plain language, analogies, and real-world examples, the book explains how cryptocurrencies reshape core concepts of money, property, markets, and governance. The author explores topics such as how and why Bitcoin is used as a financial fallback, what stablecoins are and how they have become critical infrastructure for global payments, and how NFTs introduced a new notion of ownership and identity on the internet. Written for curious readers, journalists, students, policymakers, and professionals, Cryptocurrency provides a conceptual framework for understanding crypto as infrastructure, not ideology—helping readers see past the noise to grasp the deeper forces reshaping money, trust, and coordination in the digital economy.
