Der Beginn der russischen Aggression gegen die Ukraine 2014 und die große Invasion 2022 warfen Fragen zur Interpretation der ukrainischen Erfahrung des Zweiten Weltkriegs auf. Die von Russland in den besetzten Gebieten aufgezwungene Version basiert auf dem modifizierten stalinistischen Mythos des "Großen Vaterländischen Krieges" und erstreckt sich bis in die Gegenwart, in der die Rolle der "Nazis" ukrainischsprachigen Ukrainern oder dem Westen zugeschrieben wird. Gleichzeitig hat sich die Ukraine in einem längeren Prozess der Neubewertung des Zweiten Weltkriegs engagiert: Versuche, zeitgenössische ukrainische Verteidiger mit der sowjetischen Tradition zu verknüpfen, einen Kanon nationaler Helden zu etablieren und die europäische Erfahrung des Gedenkens am 8. Mai als Tag der Erinnerung und des Sieges über den Nationalsozialismus zu übernehmen, während der 9. Mai als Europatag betrachtet wird. Inmitten dieses Prozesses entstand Sergei Yekelchyks Buch, das sich auf die Erfahrungen gewöhnlicher Menschen und westliche Helden konzentriert und eine Perspektive auf die Vergangenheit aus der Sicht der Werte des neuen Ukraine bietet, insbesondere Demokratie und Menschenrechte.

This book examines the modernisation of Iran's economy during the overlooked period from 1921 to 1946. By cross-analysing new and understudied primary sources from North America, Europe and West Asia, it argues how, in spite of challenging circumstances during these years, the country saw significant achievements in its banking, industrial, foreign trade, commercial and transportation sectors. The book marks a departure from the state-society paradigm's focus on Reza Shah, instead revealing the coordinated agency of Iranian officials, merchants and others. It asserts that the economic institutions created by these local actors were a clear indication of their nationalist convictions and internationalist outlooks, and that the state policies of this initial phase of Iran's national economy exhibited more rationality, continuity and global awareness than has been previously assumed.

This book explores the impact of the bombing of civilians during the Spanish Civil War. The Civil War has long been recognized as bringing together the political, social and other elements key to understanding the 1930s in Europe and later, the Second World War. It was a conflict involving fascism, communism, anarchism and other movements of the day, and led to a dictatorship that kept Spain separate from the rest of Europe until the late 1970s. Recent scholarship on the Civil War has focused on the deaths of 200,000 civilians in the conflict, largely as a result of executions, a number that equals and perhaps surpasses the number of those killed in battle. This effectively recasts the conflict as one that is better thought of as a systematic attack against civilians, rather than as a traditional military conflict. What is missing from this new understanding of the Civil War is an analysis of the impact of bombing. The infamous bombing of civilians in the Basque town of Guernica is widely known but, in reality, the bombardment of civilians was a regular feature of the conflict, including in both Madrid and Barcelona. This book therefore provides a study of the war against civilians from the air, civilian responses to these attacks, and the contemporary memory of this part of the Civil War.

Civilian Bombing and Civil Defence in the Spanish Civil War

This book examines the influence and strategic efforts of the Comintern, the agency created in 1919 by Lenin to promote world revolution, during the Spanish civil war. The author explores how Soviet actors took control of the War Commissariat and the Republican Government’s foreign radio broadcast service, in order to craft and diffuse an interpretation of the conflict that would serve Soviet foreign policy interests. This effective infiltration and control, contrary to a significant scholarly consensus, was not an accidental by product, but the result of careful planning and execution. Challenging dominant interpretations of the Spanish Civil War, the author reveals how the Comintern's internal assessment of the nature of the war was in fact, in stark contrast with the evolving public narrative it promoted from July 1936. Rather than a genuine effort to combat fascism and ‘defend the democratic republic,’ the strategy of the Soviet government in the Spanish Civil War was specifically designed to drive a wedge between capitalist and 'imperialist' powers, thereby hindering the formation of a much-feared 'all-imperialist, all-capitalist' military alliance against the USSR. With chapters delving into key topics such as the manipulation of public narratives, the strategic deployment of propaganda, and the construction of memory, this book presents new insights for scholars of the Spanish Civil War, the Soviet Union, and collective memory studies.

This volume presents a multidimensional analysis of the current operational law - both constitutional and customary - in Northeast India. It looks at how colonialism redesigned and redefined extant customary practices, leaving a permanent legacy on the legal governance and societal structure of the post-colonial Indian state.The book interrogates "law" through a broad spectrum of issues including gender, partition, the legacy of colonial structures, and religion as a form of resistance against land grabbing and censorship. This volume is the first to focus on the presentation of Ancient Egypt in video games. The contributions examine diverse topics concerning how Egyptian history, culture, monuments, and the land itself are portrayed across a diverse range of game genres. Over forty years of video games are analysed, including those from well-known franchises (Assassin's Creed; Tomb Raider), as well as those from independent developers. The games studied employ Ancient Egypt in different ways, as the main historical setting of the game, as the inspiration for the game's world, or as a point of reference for specific aspects of the game. Contributions by game designers from Oneiric Studios also reveal the motivations for using Egypt as the source for their game design and narrative (Path of Ra). The number of games discussed in this volume and their diversity demonstrates the important role that games play in shaping the popular imagination of Ancient Egypt.
