The Mining Rush in the 21st Century: Dynamics and Outlooks for 2050 is a geopolitical analysis that explains how the global energy transition and the digital revolution are creating massive demand for strategic metals such as lithium and cobalt, forcing humanity to extract more resources in 25 years than in its entire history to combat global warming, while highlighting the risks of dependence, environmental challenges and opportunities for Africa. The book covers a broad spectrum, from the urgency of time - with a critical window of action closing in 2032 - to the vulnerabilities of supply chains, dominated by China (85% of rare earths) and the DRC (70% of cobalt). It highlights the paradox of the green transition: to save the planet from global warming, metals must be extracted on a massive scale, posing colossal technical, environmental, social and ethical challenges. The scope extends to technological innovation (AI in prospecting, seabed mining), Africa's pivotal role in sustainable development beyond the colonial extractive model, and projections up to 2050. Aimed at a diverse audience - researchers, students, decision-makers, NGOs - the book includes more than 50 graphs, case studies (e.g. scandals in the DRC), expert boxes and a glossary for accessibility. It stands out for its holistic approach, combining field expertise, quantitative data (IEA, USGS) and concrete solutions for responsible governance, bridging the gap between geopolitical and technical analyses. It also anticipates post-2025 trends to guide the securing of global supplies.

Climate Finance for Climate Action

This book examines three scenarios of decarbonization to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of allocating carbon pollution-free sources across sectors (uses). For this purpose and looking at the EU target, the LSCOA (levelized social cost of abatement), the abatement speed (AS) and the cost of the avoided carbon cumulation (COACC) are estimated. The main conclusion is that accelerating the use of pollution-free sources in contestable end uses before the electricity supply is fully decarbonized is inefficient and ineffective compared to prioritizing their allocation to power generation, whether through renewables or carbon capture utilization and storage. Therefore, policies should focus first on decarbonizing the electricity supply. Only once this has largely been achieved, a deep penetration of pollution-free sources into contestable end uses (both “less difficult to abate and “hard to abate”) should be promoted. Following this sequence leads to lower abatement costs and reduced carbon accumulation, minimizing the cost of avoided carbon accumulation in the atmosphere. Otherwise, indiscriminate acceleration risks slowing down the overall energy transition and undermining climate objectives (including limiting global warming). Regarding the specific decarbonization pathways, direct electrification emerges as the preferable carrier, whereas hydrogen is justified as feedstock for e-fuels supply, including imports from Middle East and North Africa countries.

For the first time in the industrial age, clean energy sources accounted for nearly all new electrical capacity globally, marking the peak and the beginning of the permanent, structural decline of fossil fuel generation. An inflection point from which there is no return. This book explains how we arrived at this historic turning point and why the transition is now unstoppable.
The renewable revolution is not driven by environmental virtue or political mandates. It's not tree hugging or saving the earth. Instead, it's powered by fundamental economics. Solar power has become 41 percent cheaper than the lowest-cost fossil fuel option globally, while onshore wind is 53 percent cheaper. These aren't theoretical projections, but market realities reflected in power purchase agreements signed worldwide. The economics follow Wright's Law; a principle discovered in 1936 showing that manufacturing costs decline predictably with production scale. For over four decades, solar panel prices have fallen 20 percent with each doubling of installed capacity. Wright's Law is how we got from room sized computers costs millions to smartphones costing hundreds.Fossil fuels can't compete economically because they are extracted, not manufactured, and their cost goes up as reserves are depleted.
