Sigmund K: The Calculus of Selfishness

The Calculus of Selfishness

*Shortlisted for the Wainwright Prize* 'A fascinating exploration of the linkages between ancestral inheritance, diasporic belonging, and our climate future... I read it in one sitting, which took me on a moving and often unexpected journey' Aube Rey Lescure 'Part of me knew what the hungry ghosts wanted all along, what they still want. It is not vengeance. No, they want something else, but we refuse to listen. They want us to face up to our broken obligations.' Every spring during the Qingming Festival, people return to their home villages in China to sweep the tombs of their ancestors, making offerings of food and incense to prevent them from becoming hungry ghosts that could cause misfortune. Yet for the past century, a time ruptured by war and revolution, many tombs have been left unattended. Following a record year of wildfires, Alice Mah returns to her family's rice village in South China, and discovers that her ancestors are almost forgotten, and there are no tombs left to sweep. Instead, there are incalculable clan debts to be paid. Here Mah chronicles her journey from the rice villages of South China to her home in post-industrial England, through the Chinatowns of Western Canada where she grew up, to the isles and industry of Scotland where she now lives. As years pass and fires rage on, she becomes increasingly troubled by her ancestors' neglected graves. Her research on pollution gives way to growing eco-anxiety, culminating in a crisis of spiritual belief.A haunting blend of memoir, cultural history and environmental exploration, Red Pockets confronts the hungry ghosts of our neglected ancestors, while searching for an acceptable offering. What do we owe to past and future generations? What do we owe to the places that we inhabit?

The biographies of Günther Just, Heinrich Poll and Fritz Steiniger stand for the wide range of topics and attitudes in German genetic research before and during the Nazi period. H. Poll was a medical professor of Jewish descent, head of the Institute of Anatomy and dean of the Hamburg medical faculty. He was forced to retire in 1933. In contrast to G. Just and F. Steiniger he conducted racial research. His PhD student, the zoologist G. Just, headed both the Institute of Genetic Research in Greifswald and a genetic department in the "Reichsgesundheitsamt" in Berlin. G. Just tried to pro- mote voluntary eugenics from 1925 to 1933, but then left this topic and turned to social anthropo- logy comparing individual school performance to professional performance. Natural philosophy, holism and religious vitalism dominated his thoughts. G. Just's career was not entirely straightforward, because he rejected racism and other ideologies of the time. This was also true for his pupil F. Steiniger, who was a field zoologist and ornithologist commanded to establish an institute for eradication of lice in the occupied town of Riga in Estonia during World War II.

Individuelle Wege zwischen Biologie und Medizin: Günther Just (1892-1950), Heinrich Poll (1877-1939) und Fritz Steiniger (1908-1985)

Deutsche Vererbungsforschung vor und in der NS-Zeit

Examines the discordance among the public over controversial historic monumentsand how it should be addressed, highlighting how iconoclasm is confronted through global heritage management theory.

Throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the United States and Canada rarely experienced iconoclasm, the premeditated destruction of visual symbols, because of their specific emotional or ideological content in the public square. This is changing. As North Americans continue to reject the tangible and intangible heritage of institutionalized white supremacy, iconoclasm acts are happening with greater frequency. The death of George Floyd in May 2020 hastened the demand by Americans to remove historic monuments; so much so, that protesters took matters into their own hands and pulled down statues of historical figures, not limited to the American Civil War but also associated with European colonialism before the American Revolution and during the reign of Queen Victoria in Canada.

For historic preservationists and conservationists, iconoclasm is now the most consequential issue in the field and will continue to be a matter of contention for the foreseeable future. Motives for enacting iconoclasm can be justified, but what are the consequences for doing so, and how, in turn, will this determine the future of our public spaces in towns and cities? More fundamentally, is the current period of iconoclasm leading us to reconsider the public square as part of the built environment? This book will be the first theory-informed work to examine the discordance among the public over controversial historic monuments in the historic landscape and how it should be addressed. It challenges architects, landscape architects, conservationists, preservationists, elected officials, and the public to reconsider the public square and whether or not civic art that memorializes is still relevant or a practice that can be reimagined. It also considers the after-effects of iconoclasm acts: How should we redesign public civic spaces after we have either destroyed or removed historic monuments? As societal values change in regard to public memorialization, how will heritage practitioners, conservationist technicians, and urban designers grapple with working in the civic realm, which may be considered antiquated but continues to exist in our cities?

The book examines how iconoclasm is confronted through global heritage management theory. During the second half of the twentieth century, UNESCO and the European Union drafted charters to protect historic monuments from acts of war and degradation. The author considers these sets of principles and other international approaches to contested and conflicted heritage in addressing racism-based heritage that is embedded in North American heritage, from theoretical, architectural, and legal perspectives. France, which first experienced iconoclasm during the Revolution, has grappled with iconoclasm throughout its modern history. Revolutionary leader Henri Grégoire even invented a noun for it: "vandalism." Through the creation of an environment removed from a historic object's context-the public museum, the Louvre-France conceived institutional iconoclasm. From the revolutions and cultural upheavals of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to the calamities of two world wars in the twentieth century, Europeans have developed policy and a legal framework that address iconoclasm. The book intends to examine this legal framework closely. It will inform the direction that the North American heritage field should take in order to accept that heritage changes, and must change, in response to our own needs to acknowledge multiple histories and identities in a diverse society, while simultaneously recognizing that iconoclasm is a part of how a society resolves its emotional responses to its built heritage.

Critical Memory Studies

This open access book proposes slow memory as a new framework for understanding how remembrance operates across time, urging scholars and practitioners to resist the acceleration that characterizes both contemporary scholarship and public memory cultures. The authors explore the theoretical foundations of slow memory, emphasizing themes of deep time, intergenerational justice, and contested memory regimes. The collection focuses on the fields of environment, (de)industrialization, welfare, politics, and conflict to examine how gradual transformations impact the present through remembrance practices at different tempos. It advocates for a deceleration of scholarly and commemorative practices to develop ethical, sustainable, and inclusive engagements with the past. By foregrounding slowness as a conceptual and methodological tool, and slow memory as a "connective concept," this book offers a vital framework for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners seeking to rethink the temporalities of remembrance in an era of rapid transformation. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. This publication is based upon work from COST Action CA20105 on Slow Memory, supported by COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). COST is a funding agency for research and innovation networks. Our Actions help connect research initiatives across Europe and enable scientists to grow their ideas by sharing them with their peers. This boosts their research, career and innovation.

?Brilliant' The Times ?Hugely informative and entertaining' New Scientist ?Put this at the head of your reading lists immediately' Eric Idle From the winner of the 2022 Royal Society Science Book Prize, a thrilling and thought-provoking account of the rise and fall of humankind. For the first time in over ten millennia, the rate of human population growth is slowing down. The global population is forecast to begin declining in the second half of this century, and in 10,000 years' time our species will likely be extinct. In The Decline and Fall of the Human Empire, Henry Gee shows how we arrived at this crucial moment in history, beginning his story deep in the palaeolithic past and charting our dramatic rise from one species of human among many to the most dominant animal ever to live on Earth. But rapid climate change, a stagnating global economy, falling birth rates and an unexplainable decline in average human sperm count are combining to make our chances for longevity increasingly slim. There could be a way forward, but the launch window is narrow . . . Drawing on a dazzling array of the latest scientific research, Gee tells the extraordinary story of humanity with characteristic warmth and wit, and suggests how our exceptional species might avoid its tragic fate. ?Like Jared Diamond meets Arthur C. Clarke with a dash of Douglas Adams' Philip Ball, author of How Life Works

Some Versions of Legalism

Tradd Street Press

"The Famous Examination of Bryan at the Scopes Evolution Trial" documents one of the most significant courtroom confrontations in United States history. Chronicling the intense cross-examination of William Jennings Bryan by the renowned defense attorney Clarence Darrow, this work captures the dramatic climax of the 1925 Scopes "Monkey Trial." At the heart of the proceedings was the prosecution of John T. Scopes for teaching the theory of evolution in a Tennessee public school, a direct challenge to the state's Butler Act.This volume provides a detailed look at the intellectual and legal battle between religious fundamentalism and modern scientific thought. Through Darrow's sharp questioning, the text explores the literal interpretation of the Bible versus the emerging scientific consensus of the early 20th century. It serves as a vital historical record of the debate over academic freedom, the role of religion in public education, and the legal prowess of Clarence Darrow. Readers will find a compelling narrative of how this trial shaped the cultural landscape of America, highlighting the enduring tension between faith and reason in the public square. This account is essential for those interested in legal history, the history of science, and the evolution of American social thought. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. 'Reason to Be Happy is a wise and witty book that shows how thinking clearly can help us find happiness in our daily lives, get more of what we want, and even make the world a better place' Hannah FryWhy do our friends have more friends than we do? How do you book the best available seats on a plane? And if jogging for ten minutes adds eight minutes to our life expectancy, should we still go jogging? The ability to reason is one of our most undervalued skills. In everyday life, the key is to put yourself in the shoes of a clever competitor and think about how they might respond. Whether you are dealing with events on the scale of the Cuban missile crisis or letting go of anger, leading economist Professor Kaushik Basu shows how game theory - the logic of social situations - can help us achieve better outcomes and lasting happiness.Full of fascinating thought experiments and puzzles, Reason to Be Happy is a paean to the power of rationality. If you want to have a good life and even make the world a better place, you can start by thinking clearly.

Routledge Studies in Cultural Heritage and International Law

The Legal Pluralism of Heritage: Restitution and the Normative Knowledge of Communities of Origin explores one of the most urgent debates in international cultural heritage law today: the role of Indigenous laws and local norms about material culture in the restitution process. In an era of rising claims for restitution, this book examines how diverse legal and normative orders engage with communities seeking the return of cultural objects held in museums, private collections, and institutions worldwide. It argues that restitution processes need to consider the normative knowledge of communities of origin. Moving beyond conventional legal analysis, the volume includes theoretical interventions and case studies from (international) law, anthropology, archaeology, history, museum studies, art history and Indigenous legal studies, and from all five continents. It offers a new framework for understanding restitution not merely as a legal process, but as a dialogue between legal systems and the knowledge traditions of the communities to whom heritage belongs.Timely and thought-provoking, this book is an essential resource for researchers and practitioners in international law, legal history, historical anthropology, and cultural heritage studies.
