Dieses Open-Access-Buch widmet sich dem Projekt und den darin agierenden Forschenden: EMPOWER – Kooperation leben und Innovation gestalten, gefördert vom Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt (BMFTR) in der zweiten Förderrunde der Bund-Länder-Initiative „Innovative Hochschule“ (2023 – 2027). EMPOWER ist ein Verbundprojekt von fünf Hochschulen für Angewandte Wissenschaften in Rheinland-Pfalz mit den Zukunftsthemen Connectivity, Health, Cyber Security, Sustainability und New Work. Ziel ist es, in insgesamt mehr als 30 Pilotprojekten den forschungsbasierten Ideen-, Wissens- und Technologietransfer mit Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft in der Rhein-Main-Neckar-Region zu fördern.
Dieser Band beleuchtet die zentralen Ziele, Transferstrukturen und Herangehensweisen im EMPOWER-Verbund und stellt die zentralen Erkenntnisse aus den Forschungsschwerpunkten der ersten beiden Projektjahre vor.

EMPOWER - Kooperation leben und Innovation gestalten

Zum ökologischen Fussabdruck von Gebäuden gibt es unzählige Sammlungen von Informationen und Daten, aber ohne Expertise gewinnt man nur mit Mühe Orientierung. Denn die zentralen Grössen Treibhausgase und Energie sind unsichtbar und schwer zu fassen. Zudem spielt nicht nur der Bau und Betrieb von Gebäuden einer Rolle, sondern auch die Produktion und Entsorgung der Baustoffe.
Dieses kompakte Handbuch ist aus dem Bedürfnis praktizierender Architekt:innen entstanden, sich einen Überblick über das ebenso akute wie komplexe Thema zu verschaffen. Es zeigt mit Fokus auf die Schweiz auf, was die relevanten Faktoren und Hebel für klimabewusstes Bauen sind. Zahlen, Verhältnisse, Vergleiche vermitteln eine Vorstellung von Menge und Mass, nicht zuletzt, um Häuser in Relation zu anderen Lebensbereichen betrachten kann. Anhand von Beispielen werden die Komponenten einer von Wohn- und Bürogebäuden präsentiert. Entstanden ist ein umfassender Werkzeugkasten für Architekturschaffende und alle anderen, die nachhaltiges Bauen auf Fakten stützen wollen.

Human Resource Development for Sustainability and Social Responsibility

This volume focuses on food supply chains (FSCs), a vital component of the food system, establishing that integrated cold chain logistics (CCL) are essential for modernising FSCs of perishable commodities in low and middle income countries (LMICs). It argues that the future development of CCL should be envisioned not merely as a means to reduce food loss and waste to meet Target 12.3 of SDG12, but as an infrastructural service with the potential to enable a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive transformation of FSCs in LMICs. Towards this, the volume examines integrated CCL through its connections to: (a) cooling infrastructure as a developmental necessity rather than a luxury; (b) a critical component of food system transformation for both climate mitigation and adaptation; (c) reliable access to safe, nutritious, affordable food, thereby enhancing food and nutrition security; and (d) expanded agribusiness and livelihood opportunities by strengthening the farm-to-market link. This comprehensive approach broadens the discourse on CCL beyond engineering and management perspectives; promotes the integration of the three pillars of sustainability - economic, environmental, and social; and supports climate adaptation to foster climate-resilient and inclusive rural transformation in LMICs. 
Framed within a global context to capture evolving market dynamics, technological innovations, and emerging trends, the book offers an in-depth examination of the challenges and developmental aspects of CCL. It explores the nexus between integrated CCL and sustainable development. It presents a comprehensive 10S Dimensions-based analytical framework that emphasizes value integration and multidimensional policy coherence to support context-specific, evidence-based policymaking in LMICs, while drawing insights from high-income countries. The volume also highlights the role of policy instruments in incentivizing food loss abatement and contributes to the growing scholarship on food loss modelling by treating abatement levels as endogenous variables in agent-level decision-making across food supply chains. It enriches the discourse on CCL development from an LMIC perspective through an analysis of India’s historical trajectory, public policy evolution, persistent gaps, and investment patterns. A detailed assessment of organized cold chain operations in India introduces a country-specific performance framework, capturing indicators such as productivity, energy intensity, profitability, and risk, aimed at improving governance and informing national policy. Finally, the volume advocates reimagining investment strategies in light of disruptive trends in infrastructure, urging a renewed, long-term orientation to support systemic transformation amid the dual crises of climate change and the COVID-19 aftermath.

Simon Marx deals with the approach of Ecological Analysis of Law and thus with the question of how legally regulated human behaviour affects the natural foundations of life. He suggests a consequences-oriented approach in two steps. While respecting the primacy of legislative decisions, ecological impacts of state legal acts are supposed to be analysed and evaluated on the basis of the criteria of resource sufficiency and resource consistency, taking into account conflicting interests in resource conservation and resource use. The aim is to implement the mandate for socio-technical transformation articulated by the Federal Constitutional Court through appropriately adapted legislation and legal application. Building on this, interdisciplinary solutions are to be developed that ensure liveable conditions without imposing disproportionate restrictions on the exercise of fundamental rights.
