Das Buch behandelt das umfangreiche Gebiet der Medizin in einigen Schwerpunktthemen und weist auf ökonomische Zusammenhänge zu diesen Themen hin.&nbsp;Die Notwendigkeit, medizinische mit ökonomischer Forschung und Lehre zu verknüpfen, wird nicht mehr in Frage gestellt, da die Kosten im Gesundheitswesen ausufern. Ein aktuelles Beispiel für überproportional steigende Kosten im Gesundheitswesen sind die Ausgaben für Medikamente, die stärker zunehmen als das Bruttoinlandsprodukt (BIP). Die Kostendiskussion muss daher weiter auf allen Ebenen des Gesundheitswesens vom niedergelassenen Arzt bis zum Krankenhaus, von der pharmazeutischen Industrie bis zu den Spitzenverbänden der Selbstverwaltung geführt werden, da die wirtschaftlichen Konsequenzen einer rationalen medizinischen Versorgung analysiert, kritisch diskutiert, bewertet und transparent dargestellt werden müssen.&nbsp;Es fehlt bisher ein Basislehrbuch der Medizin für Ökonomen, also ein Buch, das medizinische Inhalte auf das für Gesundheitsökonomen relevante Maß begrenzt und dabei versucht, medizinische Maßnahmen im Zusammenhang mit Kostenbewertungen zu veranschaulichen.&nbsp;Das wesentliche Anliegen des vorliegenden Buches ist daher die Verbindung ärztlichen Denkens und Handelns mit ökonomischen Überlegungen, da der Dialog zwischen Ökonomen und Mediziner nur auf der Basis gemeinsamen Wissens effizient geführt werden kann.

This book presents a critical analysis of the concept of food heritage through a dialogue between its academic definitions and the vaguer, more common-sense meaning of the term. By addressing the notion of heritage through the question of food and eating practices, this book allows us to revisit the very meaning of this concept, now well established yet still interpreted through a wide variety of perspectives. In a mirror image, viewing the notion of heritage through the lens of food allows us to investigate an important dimension of our modern foodways. Beyond the conceptual discussion, the book analyses the concrete processes through which foods and food practices come to be defined, recognized, and mobilized as heritage, showing how these dynamics unfold in varied cultural and institutional contexts. Chapters draw on case studies from across the world-in Belgium, Catalonia, China, Brazil, Estonia, France, Japan, Korea, Morocco, Poland, Serbia, as well as across Africa and the Mediterranean region-and propose different temporalities while involving a range of actors. Among these actors, however, UNESCO occupies a particularly important place in this volume, due to the role it plays as a legitimizing body, supposed to officially consecrate certain elements as heritage. The practical cases reveal the complexity of the situations and provide detailed examples of specific issues and difficulties involved in thinking about the heritagization of food and assessing the practices related to it. This volume will be of great interest to students and scholars from across food studies, heritage studies, cultural studies, tourism studies, and anthropology.

Food Heritage

Why socially responsible investment promises to make investors richer and the world better—but fails at both. Wall Street thrives by telling investors that clever financial strategies can reverse the trade-off between corporate profits and social progress. But the link between greater corporate social responsibility and improved financial performance is an illusion. Profit vs. Progress dissects the massive $30 trillion “socially responsible” or “sustainable” finance industry—and finds the emperor has no clothes. At best, sustainable investing typically delivers average rates of financial and social returns. But it makes social and environmental crises harder to overcome, by using financial gimmickry to distract our attention from real solutions. Author Brad Swanson argues that corporations in competitive markets act without moral values, and ethical investment can’t prod them to take greater social responsibility. The only way to change the outcome of the game is to change the rules. The solutions will have to come from legislatures, not corporate boardrooms. Swanson calls for public policies to make businesses better serve all of society, not just their shareholders—without blunting their edge. His recommendations include breaking up the cartel of large asset managers, rebuilding the influence of organized labor, curbing the rapacious behavior of the private equity industry, and eliminating the conflict of interest that pits corporate directors against the greater good of the community. The author shows that in previous eras of social crisis caused by corporate excess, meaningful reforms emerged through the political process. Today as well, the path forward is clear—if we have the will to follow it.

Through the theoretical lens of law and science and technology studies (STS), this book investigates the 'ethification' of the EU regulatory framework on AI.Discourses on ethics have been proliferating in recent policy, legislative and industry-led AI regulatory initiatives in the European Union (EU). In parallel, Artificial Intelligence (AI) ethics has become institutionalized at different levels. Focusing on three EU-based case studies - research ethics committees, advisory expert groups and standardization bodies - this book critically evaluates the legitimacy of AI ethics, through the 'good governance' principles of accountability, transparency, and participation. Despite the EU's aspiration to promote a distinctive ethical approach centred on trustworthiness and human-centric AI, the book shows how ethical considerations often assume a technocratic form, lacking the robust checks and balances and democratic credentials typical of traditional forms of technology regulation. In response, the book argues for a recalibration-a deflation or re-politicization-of the role of ethics in the governance of AI.This book will appeal to scholars, EU officials, civil society actors and private-sector practitioners, working at the interface of law, ethics and technology, and especially those with interests in the regulation of AI.
