This book proposes a radical rethink of how we fund our economy. Rather than disentangling public and corporate finance, this book shows how the two are forced to feed a never-ending force: growth. By re-visiting how money is created in our economy, the book proposes a new way of funding the economy using interest-free money creation.
Economic evaluation techniques like Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) reinforce the idea that to receive funding, a project need to generate economic growth. However, this book argues that the priority of the economics discipline should be to illuminate resource allocation and scarcity and propose ways to make the economy self-sustainable, helping to avoid inflation and poverty. To do this, the book highlights that not all public needs—such as social housing or other non-profit services—require economic growth. It argues that by decoupling public funding from taxation and interest-based borrowing, governments could more effectively fund essential public services that do not need to be profitable, thereby freeing the public sector from the growth imperative imposed by the current financial system. With practical applications for sectors including healthcare, environmental policy and sustainability, the book’s interdisciplinary approach – incorporating insights from economics, finance, public policy, anthropology and more – will be a valuable tool for scholars and practitioners in diverse fields.

How Interest-Free Money Can Free Our Economy

The Growth Trap

This volume explores the state of representative democracy on the global stage. It does this against the backdrop of crises such as the USA Capitol attack on 6 January 2021, recent refusals to accept election results in various countries, and attempts to restrict the voting franchise, as well as longer-term trends such as the rise of populism and declining trust in political elites. The first substantive chapter examines representative democracy in theory, history and practice today. Taking the representative model as their point of departure, the subsequent chapters explore a range of themes in relation to this model. The contributions include timely reappraisals of democracy in countries, such as the UK and USA, with old, well-established democratic structures, as well as analyses of the state of democracy in regions such as Africa, Asia and South America, where democracy has had a more chequered history. Across all of its chapters, the book invites readers to rethink fundamental questions about representative democracy: Why is it valuable? How should it be organised? Do steps need to be taken to strengthen representative democracy, and if so, what are those steps? The volume's target audience - politicians, public servants and interested members of the public - are provided with arguments and evidence to form their own views at a time when the ideals and practices of representative democracy are being challenged around the world, and new ideas and initiatives to revitalise it are being debated and implemented.

Democracy in Crisis?

For American workers, the social contract is broken. This book gives a firsthand view of where the breaks occurred, and a prescription for rebuilding it to give workers their due. With AI making the decisions and CEOs and moguls making the money, sometimes it seems that most workers today might as well be drones. If not for a long string of missed opportunities over the last 50 years, it might have been different. In Roads Not Taken, Thomas Kochan reviews the turning points where the social contract fractured and broke, reducing workers’ voices as well as their compensation, benefits, and status. And in the lessons learned from these historical examples, he identifies the foundation for building a new labor relations system that ensures workers will share in the benefits from AI and puts America on course for an innovative and durable social contract at work. As a longtime advisor to government, labor, and management leaders, Kochan offers an eyewitness perspective on the mounting mistakes made in America’s labor relations system beginning, roughly, with Ronald Reagan’s firing of striking air traffic controllers in 1981. His book makes a strong case for new strategies on the part of labor unions and other worker advocacy groups, business, and government—strategies not wedded to the legacy labor law and practice that have failed American workers for so long. Recasting the social contract on this basis, Kochan insists, is key to rebuilding our democracy and its institutions after the damage wrought in recent years.

Facing the Child investigates the technocratic expertise in the policing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mitali Thakor argues that CSAM has come to be framed as primarily a digital problem, to be resolved digitally, thereby unleashing a new form of corporatized policing helmed by global technology companies. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on four years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.
