Ska-Attack Vol. 2

Hooligans Of Love

'Rodigan can still claim a currency few presenters of his vintage can match . . . Reggae's been lucky to have him' MOJO Rodigan is the unlikely story of how David Rodigan, an Army Sergeant Major's son from rural Oxfordshire, gave up an accomplished stage and television career and, because of a lifelong devotion to the music of a distant tropical island, became the man who championed Reggae music across the world. As the sound of Jamaica has morphed over five decades through a succession of different genres, so has Rodigan remained its constant advocate, winning the respect of generation after generation of Reggae followers across the globe. Rodigan continues to go into the heartlands of Reggae to compete in tournaments against the greatest Jamaican sound systems. He was declared the World Sound Clash champion in 2012 - at the age of sixty-one - after destroying the opposition with his unrivalled collection of rare 'dub plate' recordings. And yet Rodigan remains the antithesis of the stereotype of an international dance music DJ. 'I look like an accountant or a dentist,' he admits. Rodigan is no ordinary memoir: it is also a fascinating and incisive alternative history of a music form that remains as proud as ever of its African roots, a sound that emanates from and fiercely represents the ghetto poor. 'Never has a book taken us so skilfully through this ethereal world with candour, grit and honesty. Essential reading for anyone who calls themselves a fan of Jah music' Roger Steffens

Keine Frage - in Kunst und Kultur und der Entwicklung der Menschheit überhaupt hat es immer Übernahmen und Aneignungen von Techniken, Fertigkeiten, Motiven usw. gegeben. Man lernt ja voneinander.

Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Koblenz-Landau (Anglistik), course: Linguistics, language: English, abstract: The main objective of this work is to give an overview of linguistic phenomena that characterize Reggae songs in Jamaica. To this end, an analysis of the phonological, grammatical and lexical peculiarities that occur in Reggae music in Jamaica will be performed.

First, the author will commence with the historical background of Jamaican Creole and explain how and why it has developed and what role Standard English and even different African languages have played concerning its formation over centuries. Afterwards, the focus will be on the role of Standard English and Jamaican Creole in Jamaica. Basically, he will explain in what situations Standard English and Jamaican Creole are used, where they might be rather inappropriate and mistimed to use and mention the phenomenon of code-switching. Next up, different linguistic features of Jamaican Creole will be analysed ¿ phonological, grammatical and lexical ones. After having exemplified those features, we will take a closer look at different songs of the Reggae genre by three of the most famous Reggae artists Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Buju Banton where different linguistic features of Jamaican Creole can be found in their songs in great quantities.

Finally, the results of the typical linguistic features that have been mentioned and the occurrences of certain linguistic features in the analysed songs will be compared in order to have an overview over what features are realized in Reggae songs.

‘This collection of timeless photographs gives us an up close inside look at this uniquely complex man and brilliant iconic artist who forever changed the world. One love…’ – Lenny KravitzRebel Music is a tribute to one of the greatest legends in world music, Bob Marley. In 1975, Kate Simon first photographed Bob Marley and the Wailers at the Lyceum in London, where the now-legendary live performance of ‘No Woman No Cry’ was recorded. They then collaborated throughout the Seventies, with Simon shooting some of the most intimate, enduring and emblematic images ever taken of Marley, including his iconic Kaya album cover.Simon captured it all: portraits of the reggae greats of the Seventies, such as Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh; the Exodus Tour, on the road with Bob Marley and The Wailers as they performed across Europe; and the One Love Peace Concert, where Bob famously united Jamaica’s opposing political leaders. Ultimately, in 1981, Simon would ride with the funeral cortege from Kingston to St Ann and Bob Marley’s final resting place.Rebel Music contains over 400 photographs from Simon’s archives, many published here for the first time. Introduced by Patti Smith, with a foreword by Lenny Kravitz and afterword by Keith Richards, a cast of 24 contributors join Simon in sharing the stories behind the images, including ex-Wailers guitarist Junior Marvin and bass player and band leader Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett; musicians such as Junior Delgado, Steve Jordan, Paul Simonon and Bruce Springsteen; filmmaker Don Letts and producer Danny Sims; and Island Records founder, Chris Blackwell.

Rebel Music: Bob Marley & Roots Reggae

'Dennis Morris is one of Britain's great music and street photographers' Sunday Times 'A beautiful book ... it's a bible' Cerys Matthews, BBC 6 Music 'In Music + Life Hackney revellers, west London scrap dealers and glamorous pop stars share pages in a fascinating mix of gritty reportage and imaginative image-making' MOJO A career retrospective on one of the all-time great photographers of both music and black culture, Dennis Morris. When we think of the trailblazing photographer Dennis Morris's work, music is right there. Morris's adventures in the 1970s reggae and punk scene laid the groundwork for a six-decade career. It all began with Bob Marley: Morris doorstepped Marley in his early teens while skipping school and went on to capture much of Marley's tour, which launched his career as a music photographer. He later became the official photographer for the Sex Pistols, and for John Lydon's next project, Public Image Limited, Morris was art director and designer as well as taking iconic images for the band. He captured the greats of reggae and roots music, from Lee 'Scratch' Perry to Toots and Jimmy Cliff, forming friendships with many of the acts. Morris's documentary and street photography work, with roots in his experiences as a Black teenager in 1970s Britain, bring us visionary projects that explore race, politics and cultural identity. From the miner's strike to squat protests, from civil rights organizations to pop-up studio portraits, his work was a reckoning with his new home, capturing eccentricity and individual spirits with his camera. Edited by Laurie Hurwitz, this book unfolds in two electrifying parts: the first unravels Morris's lens on race, culture and identity in 1970s Britain, while the second pulses with encounters with music legends like Patti Smith, Gregory Isaacs, The Stone Roses and Radiohead. With contributions from agnès B and Sean O'Hagan, the book will delight photography fans and music lovers alike. It includes previously unseen images, and is supported by an internationally touring exhibition, presenting Morris's influential work in depth for the first time.
