Brings Connecticut suffragist and socialist Emily Pierson out of the shadows, exploring her role in the social and political movements that shook America from the 1910s to the Cold War.At once the story of a largely forgotten local firebrand of left politics in Connecticut, Yankee Radical chronicles the life and activism of Emily Miller Pierson. Born in Cromwell, Connecticut, Pierson was the scion of a wealthy family that owned an industrial-scale horticultural firm. After graduating from Vassar College in 1907, she immersed herself in the suffrage movement, becoming the primary ground-level organizer and strategist in her state. During the 1930s, she raised her political involvement to a new level, as Connecticut's most prominent supporter of the Communist Party and the Soviet Union, and later China. Her activities as a spokesperson, leader, and "financial angel" of the left over three decades earned her FBI surveillance and a spot on the US government's Security Index for possible detention. Still, she clung fiercely to her radical beliefs up until her death at the age of eighty-nine. Drawing on Pierson's papers and FBI file, Richard Lenzi offers an in-depth look at the political and social setting in which Pierson operated, from the development of industrial unionism in the state to McCarthyism and the Cold War.

The wealth of Tudor England was the object of much envy to less fortunate states in Europe. The main preoccupation of Tudor governments was to siphon a proper proportion of this wealth from the hands of its owners and creators into the hands of the state. Only with this transfer of resources, they believed, could the Tudor monarchy occupy its rightful place in the world. The consequence of this zealous pursuit of revenue is that Tudor statistics on wealth and property are copious and accurate. J. C. K. Cornwall used this hitherto underexploited resource to create a remarkably clear and comprehensive picture of early Tudor society in Wealth and Society in Early Sixteenth Century England (originally published in 1988). Through his pages can be sensed the efforts of the people to disguise their sources of income from the royal investigators, and the fiscal skill of the tax gatherers in finding out the truth, managing to extract both information and revenue from rich and poor alike.But what this evidence also shows is a pattern of breakdown in society. The rise in poverty, of those tramping the roads because they had lost everything, is a familiar complaint of Tudor governments. The author illustrates the effect of the forcible break-up of communities, as new industrial and agricultural practices were making rich men of those ruthlessly able to exploit their resources. His book is a fine and accurate portrait of a society in a somewhat brutal stage of transition, a picture all the more valuable because it quantifies precisely what up to now has been a more impressionistic and intuitive appraisal.

Dressays is an anthology of thought-provoking essays exploring how clothing can reveal the complex, deeply felt bonds we have with ourselves, our communities and the worlds through which we move. These deeply personal narratives demonstrate how, whether saturated with emotion or charged with political significance, dress both bears and shapes meaning. Collectively, they show how dress is as inextricable from shared cultures and histories as we are from the garments we wear. The contributions in this anthology articulate what is often felt but not seen when it comes to dress: how it ties us to other people, how it hides us even as it makes us visible, and how it helps us navigate and participate in our communities. Before the tragedy of the Holocaust, many of the leading art and antiques dealers across Europe were Jewish, establishing dynamic cross-Channel, international and transatlantic networks. Aside from a few famous examples, however, we are only at the beginning of exploring the diversity of Jewish dealers' commercial and cultural worlds, and reflecting on the particular conditions that made possible their dramatic expansion within the profession. Adopting a wider geography than any previous study, this book brings together a team of distinguished international contributors to consider Jewish art dealers as an interconnected cohort, tied together by common strategies and a shared vulnerability. Through a detailed analysis of key cases, including those concerning the Chagos Archipelago, the South China Sea, and Russia's annexation of Crimea, the book argues that adjudicators should apply ordinary scrutiny to evidence concerning territorial claims rooted in the use of force but that an exaggerated caution about the supposed limits of their authority has led them in key cases to fail in that basic part of the adjudicator's function. Examining and critiquing the February 2020 Annex VII award in Coastal State Rights, the book suggests that adjudicators would better implement the terms of UNCLOS and serve the legal system at large if they considered decisions of other international organs when these reflect consensus as to findings of fact and that they should also adhere to the standard methods of fact-finding familiar to parties and adjudicators in most legal systems. Timely and thought-provoking, this book invites a fresh look at an enduring problem made all the more urgent by the many uncertainties in present-day geopolitics.
