'Free Speech!' is a clarion call all over the world, yet what it means today is more contested than ever. Many cultures regard it as dangerous: in China, India, and across the Islamic world, unorthodox views about politics, sex, and religion are repressed and people are often punished for expressing them. Even in the west, where it is held up as a core value, there is widespread discord and disagreement about what freedom of expression means. Amidst perennial imbalances of power, continually evolving cultural taboos, dramatic new technologies and a fast-changing global media landscape, where free speech comes from - and how we might think about it - are critical questions. Through the lens of history, What Is Free Speech? shows us that freedom of speech is not an absolute from which societies and regimes have drifted or dissented at different times, but something more complicated and interesting. It comprises a range of authors who bring diverse cultural perceptions to bear on critical creativity and social learning through arts-based research practices and creative pedagogies. A first-ever documentary history of antisemitism in the United States, spanning five centuries &nbsp; In a 1790 letter to Rhode Island Jewish leader Moses Seixas, President George Washington responded to Seixas’s concerns about Jewish persecution, assuring him that America “gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance, [and] requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens.” Historians have typically identified this letter as a symbol of American Jewish exceptionalism, the idea that Jewish life in the United States has been qualitatively distinct from, indeed better than, Jewish life in Europe. Undergirding this idea is the claim that antisemitism has been a relatively minor force in American Jewish life. In this volume, Britt P. Tevis upends this narrative to reveal various manifestations of Jewish inequality in American history, highlighting the ways that Jews have encountered limited civil and political rights. &nbsp; Using a remarkable array of primary sources, Tevis traces the history of antisemitism in the United States from 1654 to 2024. Comprising government reports, judicial decisions, correspondence, advertisements, cartoons, social media posts, and more, this documentary reader presents examples of antisemitism in nine overlapping categories: church and state, disenfranchisement, racialization, defamation, antisemitism and anti-Black racism, immigration and citizenship, exclusion and segregation, violence, and anti-Zionism. Tevis also shows how Jews have reacted to instances of inequality and have negotiated their place in America, both as individuals and as a community. &nbsp; Collectively, these documents expose readers to the underexplored history of anti-Jewish discrimination in America, and the ways that Jews have championed and defended American ideals in the face of inequality.

Mary Ziegler argues that simply undoing Roe v. Wade has never been the endpoint for the antiabortion movement. Since the 1960s, the larger goal has been to secure recognition of fetuses and embryos as persons under the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, a step that the modern antiabortion movement argues would make liberal abortion laws unconstitutional. Personhood chronicles the internal struggles and changing ideas about race, sex, religion, war, corporate rights, and poverty that shaped the personhood struggle over half a century. The book explores how Americans came to take for granted that fetal personhood requires criminalization and suggests that other ways of valuing both fetal life and women's equality might be possible. Ziegler ultimately shows that the battle for personhood has long been about more than abortion: it has aimed to overhaul the regulation of in vitro fertilization, contraception, and the behavior of pregnant women; change the meaning of equality under the law; and determine how courts decide which fundamental rights Americans enjoy. This book is necessary reading for anyone seeking to understand the era launched by the reversal of Roe.

This book examines intermediate appellate courts by using the Irish Court of Appeal as a case study. The operation and contribution of intermediate appellate courts are often overlooked in legal scholarship, which tends to focus on apex courts, most frequently national supreme courts. However, intermediate appellate courts perform a series of vital functions, including error prevention, the development of doctrine, and ensuring that apex courts are free to concentrate on issues of exceptional public importance. The significance of intermediate appellate courts has increased in recent decades in tandem with an increase in the volume and complexity of litigation in many countries. The Irish Court of Appeal was established in 2014 and this enables a number of dimensions of non-apex courts to be examined, including the rationales for, and challenges of, inserting such a court into an existing and well-established legal system. Institutional aspects of the court such as the appointment and promotion of its judges and its rules on dissent are analysed. The process of 'setting up court' is described. In addition, its contribution to some areas of substantive law over the first 10 years of its operation is evaluated. Interviews with judges who have served on the Court enrich the book's account of its operation and development. In addition, comparative perspectives from Northern Ireland and England and Wales enhance the analysis of an integral part of many legal systems.

This book takes readers through the major events and debates in the modern history of the Republic of Turkey. Beginning with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of WWI and the victory of nationalist forces in 1923, it relays the key turning points, issues and trends in the Republic's history. It gives readers a strong grounding in the political history as well as historiographical debates including: - the nation building process and nationalisms; - the development of political Islam - the impact on Turkey of the Cold War - decolonisation - the role of the army in politics and the dominance of the coup in historiography - class structure - human rights - civil society - secularism - the Ottoman legacy The book incorporates the very latest thinking on the study of Turkey into its narrative, covering essential issues hitherto left out of introductory texts which prioritise security such as migration (both internal within Turkey and out of and into Turkey); economic models; Turkey's geostrategic position; energy resources and policies; the environment; gender: and entertainment culture including sport. Each of the book's 13 chronological chapters includes a chronology of major events and a further reading and sources section which include Turkish short stories, novels or poems in translation, online open access sources, films and documentaries and text boxes containing, poetry, film posters, newspaper headlines, short biographies, adverts, and information on specific events such as the introduction of TV feature throughout the text to aid learning. Breaking with the Cold War paradigm and its focus on the coups and security as well as approaches to Turkey which over emphasise the Ottoman past, this book offers readers a new assessment of the Republic which reflects the diverse approaches to its history prevalent in current scholarship.
