Psychology of Traffickers: Insights from Romanian Prisons offers a rare and methodologically rigorous examination of the moral and psychological worlds of individuals convicted of human trafficking. Based on in-depth qualitative interviews with twenty incarcerated traffickers in Romania, the book analyzes how exploitation is rationalized, normalized, and sustained over time within conditions of inequality, migration, and institutional constraint.Rather than portraying traffickers as aberrant or pathological, Dr. Bogdan situates their actions within everyday social and moral frameworks: intimate relationships, informal economies, gendered expectations, and bureaucratic systems that enable harm through routine practices and moral distancing. Through traffickers' own narratives, the book reveals how responsibility is displaced, coercion reframed, and exploitation rendered psychologically livable.Integrating offender accounts with criminological and forensic psychological theory, the book develops empirically grounded typologies of trafficking involvement and moral coping. In doing so, it challenges simplified victim-perpetrator binaries and advances a structural, narrative-based understanding of trafficking as a social process rather than an exceptional crime.Designed for forensic psychologists, criminologists, and scholars of violence and inequality, Psychology of Traffickers provides a critical framework for analyzing accountability, risk, and intervention by foregrounding the moral reasoning through which exploitation persists.

Rethinking Asia and International Relations

East Asia is shaped as much by identity-based dynamics as by material forces. This book examines how the evolving state identities of China and Japan have interacted with the regional order and its prospects for both cooperation and conflict.While identity-based dynamics have long been recognised as enduring features by observers of East Asia, conventional accounts often emphasise the absence of a shared identity, persistent historical grievances, and nationalism-fuelled territorial disputes-particularly between China and Japan-as key obstacles to regional cooperation. This volume instead offers a state identity politics approach that moves beyond viewing the 'ghosts of the past' as fixed constraints. It focuses on how domestic actors in both countries construct and mobilise state identities, how domestic politics interact with international relations, and how these identities shape regional order. Through analysis of China's and Japan's evolving approaches to key post-Cold War regional initiatives, the author demonstrates why state identity politics is vital to understanding Sino-Japanese relations and broader regional dynamics in East Asia.This book will be of interest to scholars and students of East Asian politics, Sino-Japanese relations, diplomatic studies, and domestic-international interactions, as well as policymakers engaged in these fields.

This is the first book to present a new approach of institutional design as an evolutionary applied policy based on coherent conceptualization and methodology, and to study the actuality and implications of diversifying real/virtual community currencies. In contrast to a de facto standard theory, an institutional ecosystem can be composed of various institutions that continue to coexist with changing relative frequencies. In this view, diversified monetary institutions with local rules are feasible and realistic. Community currencies are worldwide attempts to redress such problems as financial instability, chronic stagnation, and decline of communities caused by globalization of the economy. Considering those alternative movements as a new type of policy, "evolutionist institutional design", this book clarifies the feasibility and significance of community currencies in the current era of globalization. The book also provides a better understanding than mainstream approaches of such platform institutions as money that determine fundamental means of cognition and action of interacting agents. Money is a symbolically generalized communication medium in the mesodomain that mediates between socioeconomic performance and patterns in the macrodomain and motives and cognitive frameworks in the microdomain. Conventional national systems of money and finance are platform institutions that determine basic replicators for a capitalistic market economy to evolve. In contrast, community currencies conveying both economic and social/cultural values are distinct platform institutions that are expected to endogenously change such basic replicators in outer and inner institutions for agents to a noncapitalistic market economy. These currencies are considered target institutions for "media design" in the framework of evolutionist institutional design.

Public diplomacy matters to the G20. As the self declared 'premier international forum for economic cooperation', the G20 has global interests and ambitions. The G20 requires the ongoing engagement and support of global public audiences. Simply put, it is a matter of effectiveness, legitimacy and credibility. Yet as an informal, nomadic institution that brings together a diverse array of high profile actors, global, interests and issues, the G20 also presents unique opportunities and challenges to public diplomacy's agenda. The wider narrative of the G20 as an inclusive institution capable of involving publics in the process of global change is underexplored. This book asserts that public diplomacy is the key to the G20's ongoing development, and proposes a fourth phase to John Kirton's (2013), current three phased approach: the mobilization of the many. By examining the many facets of G20 public diplomacy, Byrne contributes to the evolving understanding of the G20 while offering new insights on the evolving practice of public diplomacy beyond the traditional state-centric perspective.

This book uncovers the controversies around the suspended prison sentence, its main aims and features, and the role that it occupies within the wider criminal justice context. Suspended prison sentences were introduced in Central and Eastern European (CEE) states as alternatives to short prison sentences: although they were initially generally conceived of as exceptional penal tools, over time, they became the most imposed and dominant penal sanctions and, in that sense, a defining feature of criminal justice systems in the region.The book provides a rich source of information about the development and features of suspended sentences in eight CEE countries, a topic that although of great importance due to their frequency, has received only scant academic attention. Employing a legal, socio-legal, and criminological approach, it achieves this goal through individual chapters on eight countries (Czechia, Estonia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, the Russian Federation, Serbia, and Slovenia), and also through two general chapters, which outline the main specificity of the region as a whole but also present nuances between different countries.The book will be of interest to a wide variety of academic researchers who study crime, punishment, and the penal system, and especially to those interested in sentencing. Given the huge discrepancy in the frequency of use of this sanction in CEE countries and the frequency of use of parole in contemporary practice, the work provides unique insights into the potential and desirability of its wider use, particularly due to minimal supervision that it requires in examined countries.
