This open access book examines the work of the 17th-century Baroque painter, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682) - a figure who barely left the city of Seville - as a way of understanding globalization, its consequences, and its limits. Full of saints, friars, virgins, and Christs, or poor people and cheerful pícaros oblivious to social injustice, Murillo's painting has been considered representative of the Counter-Reformation and the exponent of an immobile, even introverted, society that regressed with the 'crisis of the 17th century'. Early Globalization, Spain, and Seventeenth-Century Seville introduces a global perspective by considering the Atlantic art market and developing comparisons with Protestant paintings and an analysis of Murillo's iconography alongside the social and political theory of his time. Such comparisons and analyses illuminate a different image, emphasizing the idea of a common European path towards modernity, individualism, emotional self-control and social change. The book also examines how Murillo's contemporaries interpreted his iconography. The study of different 'layers of globalization', going back to the analysis of the Christian tradition, reveals the existence of political utopias, positive forms of valuing work and an image of the community that, opposed to the development of the speculative economy associated with globalization, would characterize the European history, with all its contradictions. The result is a new and sharper understanding of the tensions created by globalization in the field of art, in the construction of imagined communities, and in social relations in the early modern era. "Golmohammadi offers the first sustained account of the principle of participatory democracy in EU law, tracing Article 11 TEU from its textual architecture to its operation across some of the multiple yet little-known channels of participation in the Union's democratic life" - Alberto Alemanno | Jean Monnet Professor of EU Law, HEC Paris This book offers the first complete legal doctrinal map of the principle of participatory democracy enshrined in the EU Treaties. It traces the principle's origins, its theoretical underpinnings and identifies key legal rights and obligations which follow from it. Against the backdrop of representative democracy in crises, the book unpacks the Treaty promise of citizens participating in the democratic life of the Union including its law and rule-making. Case studies, related to participation in EU law-making, are assessed to determine whether institutional practices adhere to or conflict with the identified legal obligations. The book explores relevant judicial review and redress mechanisms which exist to give effect to the principle of participatory democracy, as well as recent relevant jurisprudence of the CJEU. Drawing on political theory and empirical methods, while centring the analysis on legal interpretation and methods, suggestions are offered to advance the realisation of the principle of participatory democracy. By consolidating and conceptualising the previously contested content of the Treaty's principle of participatory democracy and coupling this doctrinal clarity with an empirically informed blueprint for applying and enforcing the principle, the volume recasts participatory democracy as a concrete, justiciable norm of EU law.

This collection reviews Hegel in relation to the key themes of history, politics and philosophy. It shows how Hegel is a historical thinker, whose theories are
developed via a philosophical consideration of historical development at a number of levels. Hegel’s expertise in the history of philosophy leads him to
recognize the distinctiveness of the present, while building upon philosophical predecessors. This perspective sheds light on Hegel’s distinctive reading of the
political, which is both insightful and timely. Hegel’s reading of political economy emerges out of his conception of modernity and remains relevant to contemporary conceptions of civil society. Likewise Hegel’s focus upon the international remains of great moment in that he shows the interplay between internal and external forms of sovereignty. Hegel’s global perspective on international politics remains of relevance today and it bears upon his understanding of internal state sovereignty and history. This volume ends with a synoptic reading of Hegel today, which reviews him critically in the light of his problematic reading of race, sex and Eurocentrism. The essays in this volume reflect Gary Browning’s engagement with Hegel over a number of years, and, collectively, they show how Hegel’s political theory is linked to his reading of history and philosophy, and they make a case for the continued relevance of Hegel’s political and international theory.

This is the first book to cover the evolution and scope of Aldous Huxley’s socio-political ideas in a concise and highly accessible manner, both for political theorists and interested students from various disciplines. From his social journalism in the early 1930s, through his notoriously famous novel Brave New World, his involvement with the Peace Pledge Union in the mid-30s, his pivotal socio-anthropological study Ends and Means in 1937, his post-war essays, the black dystopia Ape and Essence, his involvement with Eastern philosophy and Krishnamurti, his lecture circuits in the 1950s (Santa Barbara, MIT, etc.) to his final novel, Island (1962), the counter-piece to Brave New World, the author explores how Huxley investigates the benefits and risks of democracy, anarchism, decentralisation, forms of authoritarianism, human engineering (education), the ideological pitfalls of the grand narratives of the early 20th century, as well as the anthropological dimensions underpinning social ideals and their means of realisation.
