'Deeply interesting ... a superb critique of contemporary self-obsession' Steven Poole, Guardian'Engrossing ... bracing ... incendiary and timely' Stuart Jeffries, Daily TelegraphA philosopher explains why the search for identity is meaningless, and how we should escape the self Modern life encourages us to pursue the perfect identity. Whether we aspire to become the best lawyer or charity worker, life partner or celebrity influencer, we emulate exemplars that exist in the world - hoping it will bring us happiness. But this often leads to a complex game of envy and pride. We achieve these identities but want others to imitate us. We disagree with those whose identities contradict ours - leading to polarisation and even violence. And yet when they thump against us, we are ashamed to ring hollow. In Against Identity, philosopher Alexander Douglas seeks an alternative wisdom. Searching the work of three thinkers - ancient Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi, Dutch Enlightenment thinker Benedict de Spinoza, and 20th Century French theorist René Girard - he explores how identity can be a spiritual violence that leads us away from truth.Through their worlds and radically different cultures, we discover how, at moments of historical rupture, our hunger for being grows: and yet, it is exactly these times when we should make peace with our indeterminacy and discover the freedom of escaping our selves.'Lucid and absorbing ... One of my highlight books of the year' Stuart Kelly, Scotsman

Band I: Schlüsselwerke der Kritischen Lebenskunst I. Von Theodor W. Adorno bis Corine Pelluchon

Von Simone de Beauvoir bis Irvin D. Yalom

The Good Society

Palgrave Studies in Classical Liberalism

“While American conservatives and classical liberals have long been preoccupied with defending the American political system against those who wanted to transform it, their defense rested on a deep misunderstanding. The tragedy occurred when “defenders of the Constitution” entered into alliances with groups that rejected the constitution's principles, leading to the anti-democratic takeover of the Republican Party. Gus diZerega’s book is an indispensable guide to the historical origins of political polarization in the United States.”

David Emanuel Andersson
, National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan
This short, concise book offers a theoretically grounded reinterpretation of American political development, integrating political theory, political economy, and intellectual history. Drawing on James Madison and the Scottish Enlightenment, and informed by Austrian economic thought, it argues that the U.S. Constitution is best understood as a spontaneous order: an emergent framework coordinating diverse actors through procedural rules, overlapping majorities, and checks and balances rather than fixed policy outcomes.Set against this perspective, the book examines how European-derived frameworks – particularly classical liberal interpretations associated with Lord Acton – misread the American system and influenced modern conservatism. It distinguishes between constitutional conservatism rooted in rule of law and a Southern conservatism grounded in hierarchy, tracing their convergence through late twentieth-century political realignment. In extending Hayekian analysis to democratic institutions, the book contributes to debates in political economy, American political development, and complex adaptive systems. Gus diZerega
is an independent scholar of political theory whose work focuses on democracy, spontaneous order, and complex adaptive systems. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and is the author of Persuasion, Power, and Polity, an early application of Hayekian theory to democratic systems. A founder and editorial board member of Cosmos + Taxis, his research spans political theory, environmental politics, institutional analysis, and metaphysics.

Meyer, Flaubert u.a.

Treue. Zur Ethik des Realismus

An Instant New York Times bestsellerOne of most influential thinkers today, 'the woman who revolutionized feminism' (Guardian), offers a deeply engaging story of justice and power in America When Kimberlé Crenshaw was five years old in Ohio during the civil rights era, she was the only girl denied a lead role in her nursery play. Puzzled by her teacher's behaviour, she spoke up - and never stopped. That instinct to question power, to challenge what others accepted as fair, would shape not only her own life but the way we now understand race and gender. In Backtalker, Crenshaw traces her journey from a spirited girl in Canton, Ohio to one of the most influential legal thinkers today. Through childhood lessons and painful reckonings - a boyfriend's violence in college, a back door at Harvard Law, the silencing of women in the civil rights movement - Crenshaw learned to see the patterns others missed, refusing to stay behind the lines the world drew for her.Out of those experiences came two ideas that changed everything: intersectionality, the recognition that race, gender, and class overlap to create unique forms of discrimination; and critical race theory, the argument that racism is structural. Crenshaw's voice has since echoed through some of the most charged moments in recent history - from Anita Hill's testimony to the rise of Black Lives Matter - insisting that true justice means seeing the whole picture.Backtalker is both a memoir of awakening and the origin story of a transformative mind. Crenshaw's story is ultimately about fairness and power - and the enduring battle for America's soul.

Focusing on legal science and its application, this book comprehensively examines the knowledge system, methodology, and values of judgment formation from theoretical jurisprudence to practical application. Tracing the development of legal science, the book analyzes the core connotations of legal rationality, emphasizing the certainty, scientific nature, and ethical aspects of judgments. Through a profound analysis of legal rationality, evidentiary methods, and judicial procedures in the context of adjudication, the book demonstrates how to achieve "good law and good governance" in judicial practice, providing theoretical guidance and practical direction for legal professionals.

Formation of Adjudication: Legal Science as Knowledge, Methodology and Value, and Its Application

This open access book examines the work of the 17th-century Baroque painter, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682) - a figure who barely left the city of Seville - as a way of understanding globalization, its consequences, and its limits. Full of saints, friars, virgins, and Christs, or poor people and cheerful pícaros oblivious to social injustice, Murillo's painting has been considered representative of the Counter-Reformation and the exponent of an immobile, even introverted, society that regressed with the 'crisis of the 17th century'. Early Globalization, Spain, and Seventeenth-Century Seville introduces a global perspective by considering the Atlantic art market and developing comparisons with Protestant paintings and an analysis of Murillo's iconography alongside the social and political theory of his time. Such comparisons and analyses illuminate a different image, emphasizing the idea of a common European path towards modernity, individualism, emotional self-control and social change. The book also examines how Murillo's contemporaries interpreted his iconography. The study of different 'layers of globalization', going back to the analysis of the Christian tradition, reveals the existence of political utopias, positive forms of valuing work and an image of the community that, opposed to the development of the speculative economy associated with globalization, would characterize the European history, with all its contradictions. The result is a new and sharper understanding of the tensions created by globalization in the field of art, in the construction of imagined communities, and in social relations in the early modern era. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com. Open access was funded by Pablo de Olavide University, Spain.

Culinary Man and the Kitchen Brigade offers an exploration of the field of normative subjectivity circulated within western fine dining traditions, presenting a theoretical analysis of the governing relationship between the chef, who embodies the Culinary Man, and the fine dining brigade. The book offers a unique treatment of western haute cuisine's interlocking regime of labor and aesthetics and theorizes the underexplored kitchen brigade as a model of disciplinary formation. It deploys a heterogeneous set of disciplinary discourses and practices which have the effect of consolidating monopolies on epistemic authority and governance. Each position within the brigade's hierarchy is subject to distinct, though related, disciplinary practices. Thus, chapters identify the specific practices pertinent to each brigade subject, while also illuminating how they fit together as a coherent hegemonic project. The application of Wynterian and Foucauldian insight to the fine dining brigade offers a political theory of culinary work which departs from other food studies texts. Notably, this work offers an in-depth treatment of the brigade's colonial dimensions which resonate with emerging critiques, scholarly and general, of the race and gender politics of restaurant labor. The concluding chapters seek to identify where extant modes of resistance or alternative forms of culinary organization may hold the potential to move beyond the hegemonic overrepresentation of Culinary Man.This book will be of great interest to students and scholars from across the social sciences and humanities interested in critical food studies, political and cultural theory, and popular culinary culture.
