Gesundheit, Kommunikation und Gesellschaft

Die Public Health Humanities verstehen Gesundheit und Krankheit als kulturell und sozial geprägte Phänomene. Sie ergänzen die empirisch orientierte Multidisziplin Public Health um geisteswissenschaftliche und künstlerische Perspektiven. Dabei fragen sie nach der Bedeutung des Künstlerischen für die Gesundheit, interessieren sich für moralische, soziale und kulturelle Dimensionen von Gesundheit und Krankheit in Kunst bzw. Medien und bieten theoretische Zugänge für gesundheitliche Analysen an. Bezugsdisziplinen sind u.a. Kunst-, Kultur- und Medienwissenschaften, Philosophie und Geschichte. Die Beiträger*innen leuchten das Spektrum unterschiedlicher Perspektiven und Zugänge der Public Health Humanities erstmals auf Deutsch aus.

From a leading expert on child development, a radical evolutionary perspective on how childhood experiences shape later life. Children who grow up in troubled circumstances-experiencing deprivation or instability, living in a dangerous neighborhood or an abusive family-are more prone to aggression, recklessness, and sexual promiscuity later in life. To most of us, the lesson is clear: adverse childhood conditions make human development go awry. In The Nature of Nurture, renowned developmental psychologist Jay Belsky challenges this interpretation and offers an exciting alternative based on Darwinian theory. There is no reason to assume, he points out, that the psychology of "well-behaved" people is normal while that of "antisocial" adults is aberrant. Instead, the supposedly dysfunctional behaviors correlated with childhood adversity could well be ingenious adaptations to harsh environments. If you are surrounded by danger and uncertainty, then being quick to lash out at potential threats and having lots of offspring at an early age are good ways to maximize your reproductive chances. From an evolutionary perspective, having just a few children and lavishing care on each works well in a stable world, but not in a perilous one. Belsky exposes the romanticism underlying our idealized notions that "natural" equals "good" and that nature intends to maximize human happiness and well-being. When instead we take seriously the fact that humans, too, have been shaped by evolutionary pressures, we can better understand why, how, and for whom childhood experience shapes later life.

This book analyzes the rhetorical and ethical dynamics of a culture of jihadi cool/chic, and why these rhetorical and aesthetic techniques have been such a powerful recruitment force for particular transnational terrorist groups. The author uses an evidence-based approach, with frameworks derived from law, politics, philosophy, rhetoric, feminist theory, and communication studies, to examine various attempts to construct counter-narratives to the jihadi cool master narrative. The book closes with an examination of how to begin to respond critically and effectively to the lure of jihadi cool.

Competing Sovereignties: Parallel States, Public Services, and the Struggle for Legitimacy in Kosovo examines 30 years of parallel state competition in Kosovo, exploring how ordinary people navigate between rival authorities when multiple states compete for their loyalty through the provision of essential public services.In Kosovo's remote villages, children attend separate classrooms under different flags, representing competing educational systems from two states that deny each other's existence. Drawing on extensive fieldwork and over 100 interviews, the book examines this parallel state competition in Kosovo: First during the 1990s Albanian resistance movement operating underground beneath Serbian rule, then after 1999 when ethnic Serbs established their own parallel institutions alongside the emerging Kosovo state. The book reveals how different services, such as education, healthcare, and justice, carry distinct political profiles that shape citizen choices in fundamentally different ways. Individual decision- making is influenced by two key factors: the specific characteristics of each service (whether technical or symbolic, individual or collective) and the degree of group solidarity within communities. Through detailed analysis of how Albanians and Serbs have chosen between competing schools, hospitals, and courts, the book demonstrates that the real competition for legitimacy in contested territories is fought through governance, not guns. It challenges conventional assumptions about state- building and citizen loyalty, showing how people tactically navigate between authorities based on complex calculations involving quality, trust, identity, and social pressure.Providing a nuanced understanding of how people experience and respond to competing political authorities in their everyday lives, Competing Sovereignties will be of great interest to political scientists, historians, and sociologists interested in state formation, nationalism, and conflict resolution.
