A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER Now with a new preface and postscript! Stow away with Rick Steves for a glimpse into the unforgettable moments, misadventures, and memories of his 1978 journey on the legendary Hippie Trail. In the 1970s, the ultimate trip for any backpacker was the storied “Hippie Trail” from Istanbul to Kathmandu. A 23-year-old Rick Steves made the trek, and like a travel writer in training, he documented everything along the way: jumping off a moving train, making friends in Tehran, getting lost in Lahore, getting high for the first time in Herat, battling leeches in Pokhara, and much more. The experience ignited his love of travel and forever broadened his perspective on the world. This book contains edited selections from Rick’s journal and travel photos with a 45-years-later preface and postscript reflecting on how the journey through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, and Nepal changed his life. You know Rick Steves. Now discover the adventure of a lifetime that made him the travel writer he is today.

'An unimpeachable, erudite jewel of a book on the politics of memorialisation. This beautifully written reckoning with history shines a clear light on how far and how tenaciously the shadows of colonialism reach into our lives in the present moment. A necessary and vital piece of work' Neel Mukherjee, Booker Prize shortlisted author of The Lives of Others

'Compulsively readable. Rather than a superficial skirmish in the culture wars, the struggle over statues is about how we live with and relate to one another, and the fight over equality and dignity in the present' Laleh Khalili, Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, University of Exeter

'A powerfully grounded and eminently thoughtful contribution to debates around race, caste, class and historical memory. At once considered and stimulating, Rao's account of how we grapple with the imperial past and present will stay standing even as statues rise and fall over the coming decades' Priyamvada Gopal, Professor of Postcolonial Studies, University of Cambridge

Statues around the world have become lightning rods for public debates over the meaning of our imperial past and postcolonial present. The Psychic Lives of Statues is an insightful exploration of these global controversies, demonstrating that beneath their surface lie deeper struggles over race, caste and the politics of decolonisation.

Rahul Rao takes readers on an international journey, revealing how these controversies have dramatically rearranged anticolonial political thought through the multifaceted lenses of justice, cultural memory and belonging.

The Psychic Lives of Statues explores both the toppling of colonial statues and the erection of postcolonial ones, illuminating how statues remain powerful and compelling forms of memorialisation. Engaging with artists, scholars and activists, Rao offers a fresh and exciting perspective on how we understand our past and present through iconography.

Rahul Rao is a Reader in International Political Thought in the School of International Relations at the University of St Andrews, and Professorial Research Associate at SOAS University of London. He is the author of two other books - Third World Protest: Between Home and the World (2010) and Out of Time: The Queer Politics of Postcoloniality (2020). He is a member of the Radical Philosophy editorial collective.

This book develops an understanding of how the public-private distinction operates in judicial review and freedom of information laws in England and India, and examines how the distinction may affect public law accountability for Public-Private Partnerships. Drawing on experiences from England, it examines some of the public law concerns that arise from the participation of the private sector in the provision of public sector services. The comparative approach sheds light not just on the similarities but also on some important differences in the working of the public-private distinction across the two mechanisms of judicial review and freedom of information laws, and across the two jurisdictions. Since differences in drawing those distinctions may lead to different outcomes for the amenability of entities to public law, the research undertaken in this book is helpful not only in expounding, but also predicting the working of the public-private distinction. Scholarship on administrative law from the Global South has hitherto been limited, and this comparative study presents a valuable contribution towards addressing this gap. The book will be of interest to practitioners, academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of Administrative Law and Comparative Law.

India Studies in Business and Economics

This book provides a comprehensive perspective by taking an interdisciplinary approach to issues of attaining SDGs in India. It starts with policy priorities and opportunities for interlinking of different SDGs with sustainable industrial transformation. Subsequently, various chapters present a blend of analytical methods that are primarily rooted in economics and yet have an inter-disciplinary approach, highlighting pathways towards achieving SDGs, especially SDG1, SDG2, SDG3, SDG4, SDG10, SDG11, SDG13, and SDG15. Gender equality and empowerment of women is a common cross-cutting issue across all three themes towards achieving SDG targets. Chapters are divided into three themes climate change, health and nutrition, and poverty and inequality, with a special chapter devoted to each theme providing the overall picture. The book’s content is a great resource for students, researchers, policymakers, and development practitioners studying these SDGs related to India as the country moves forward on its growth path.

Critically examining the prevalent belief that microcredit alleviates poverty and enhances borrowers' self-esteem, Microcredit Misallocation? Social Expenditure Patterns Among Poor Borrowers transcends corporate requirements to recognize the social obligations and non-commercial needs of impoverished borrowers. In this book, Rao empirically analyses the data of borrowers in Telangana, India, who obtained loans from a public sector bank branch in Hyderabad and a state-operated microfinance institution (MFI) in rural Balapur, to evaluate their actual loan usage compared to intended income-generating activity. The principal findings reveal that debtors consistently prioritize their immediate obligations, with a considerable share of the loans being allocated to sustenance, festivals, and children's marriages, whereas health and food constitute lower percentages owing to the availability of free services. Other factors, such as the loan's intended use, the borrower's dependency ratio, oversight, and attitudes towards repayment also affect such loan diversion. Providing crucial insights for bankers, practitioners, and policymakers, the results indicate that inadequate evaluation of borrowers' holistic economic, social, and sustenance requirements, coupled with swift technological advancements, propel microcredit misallocation-related behaviour. MFIs must formulate improved strategies and policies informed by these variables to optimize resource utilization and attain long-term financial stability for small-scale borrowers.

"Jeyamohan is one of India's most resourceful makers of literary art" PANKAJ MISHRA Our understanding of contemporary India is incomplete without reading Jeyamohan" VIVEK SHANBHAG, author of Ghachar Ghochar The year is 1878 and the south of India is in the grip of a devastating famine.Aiden Byrne, an Irish police officer and loyal servant to the Crown, encounters two laborers being brutally whipped by the roadside. Their tormentor is an overseer from the Tudor Ice Company, where mammoth blocks of ice, harvested from frozen New England lakes, are broken down for British banquets by workers from the lowest rung of the caste system. When those same laborers are found murdered, Aiden and Kathavarayan, a charismatic young activist, set out on a journey that brings them face-to-face with the bloody toll of the famine raging through the country. Once so fearless in this heat-blasted land, Aiden will now be forced to grapple with his own precarious role in the machinery of empire.A vivid reimagining of the first labor uprising in modern Indian history, White Elephant is a soul-searing novel by one of India's greatest living writers, offering a stirring, indelible argument against the pitiless march and corrupting influence of empire.Translated from the Tamil by Priyamvada Ramkumar

'This bracing tour d'horizon of the once and future world order, although aimed at the informed layman, is well worth reading . . . His newest work is no exception' THE TIMES'Timely . . . thought-provoking' FINANCIAL TIMES'Cuts through the noise to give the reader geopolitical clarity' TIM MARSHALL'Shines powerful light on the state of contemporary geopolitics . . . In the West, this meant the struggle for supremacy in Europe and the Americas, while in the East, it encompassed those vying for control over the successor states to Genghis Khan's empire. Between 1989 and the year 2000, great power rivalry temporarily gave way to globalization, with liberal democracy on the march and national chauvinism seemingly in retreat. But events of the past decade have made one thing abundantly clear: the great powers are back.In The Return of the Great Powers, renowned historian Brendan Simms offers a new history of the rise, fall, and return of the Great Powers in our time. He shows that over the past ten years or so, the major global actors have already resumed making decisions based on geopolitical rather than global economic considerations. Delivering a clear-eyed reckoning with today's most pressing geopolitical issues, from the Ukraine war to the future of American dominance, The Return of the Great Powers insists that we can only understand the future of the great powers by looking to the history that forged them.
