'A whistle-stop tour de force with an expert guide . . . Pure fire.' Symeon Brown'A smorgasbord of fascinating cameos . . . [Bardowell's] paid his dues, people, and now it's time to enjoy the fruits of what he's witnessed.' John Masouri, Echoes MagazineDancehall isn't just music. It's a philosophy, a survival strategy, a rebellion in riddim.Fire Inna Dancehall traces the collision of sound, style and struggle that created one of the most influential cultural movements of the past half-century. From inner city Kingston to the council estates of London, the block parties of New York and the underground scenes of Panama and Puerto Rico, ex-reggae columnist Derek A. Bardowell charts the rise, triumphs, controversies and tragedies of a space where joy and resistance share the same rhythm.Blending in-depth social history and journalistic insight with the movement's revolutionary spirit, Bardowell explores how the pulse of dancehall speaks to migration, masculinity, faith, freedom and the ongoing fight for self-determination to reveal how a sound became a global language of liberation.A comprehensive guide to the people, places and politics that shaped dancehall and an unapologetic tribute to Black creativity, Fire Inna Dancehall does not seek permission to sing but insists on being heard.

Laying your head in water is what you do when you're having a bad day. The water is where you go when you need time to think. It's where you go when you reach a crossroads in your life.Living in Copenhagen had been a dream for Laura Hall and it was working out - until it wasn't. She discovered that the trials of life will follow you anywhere and felt herself disintegrating into stress and burn out. She was unmoored and unsure of how to find her place in the world. What followed was a year swimming the cold seas of Scandinavia in search of answers and meaning. She swam in iceberg-filled seas in Greenland, experienced Viking spas in Iceland and visited beaches and piers all over Norway, Denmark and Sweden. During this year of discovery, Laura met other people doing the same thing and swapped notes, discovering ways to use the water to strengthen a bond with nature and get back to a more human way of life.A love letter to the sea and the people of Scandinavia, this book is also a clarion call for anybody stuck in a rut who needs to rekindle their lust for life. It's time to reconnect with the natural world. It's time to lay your head in the water.

Nanotechnology could be the key to future scientific and engineering breakthroughs, space travel and kickstarting a new industrial revolution. But what exactly is it?In this accessible and concise primer, Rahul Rao takes the reader on a journey to the hidden world of the nano realm. This world is invisible to the human eye, but without it, life as we know it simply wouldn't exist. Nanotechnology is the craft of editing, manipulating and shaping this parallel world in ways that can have profound impacts on a huge scale.Celebrating the power and potential of the small things, this book looks at a diverse range of examples of nanotechnology including super-strength carbon nanotubes, speciality nanoparticles and biological nanomachinery. It explains the science behind these breakthroughs and offers a tantalising glimpse at what may await us in the world of tomorrow.

Routledge Studies in Fascism and the Far Right

The interwar period was marked in Europe by the rediscovery of corporatism as a possible solution to the crucial problems of modern mass society. This was the result of general changes across industrialised countries in the relationship between the state and social groups. In Italy, it took on a uniquely authoritarian shape. Fascist regime became the cradle of a new model of corporatism, a "third way" alternative to both capitalism and communism, destined to influence both political, juridical, and economic debate and similar legislative experiments undertaken by other countries, be they democratic or authoritarian. The book offers an overview of corporatism in Fascist Italy. It examines not only the ideology but also the acts and real activities of corporative institutions (corporazioni). It dwells upon internal debates, the political and institutional importance acquired by corporative institutions in the Fascist regime, and the behaviour of entrepreneurial organizations and labour unions. At the same time, the book highlights the role of Italy in the transnational circulation of the corporative ideal by reconstructing both the considerable influence of Mussolini's regime in a range of different political and geographical contexts and the way in which the authorities in Rome turned to coeval international experiences.

'A truly major work, both deeply moving and incredibly powerful. A masterpiece of research, structure and writing . . . unforgettable' - Sir Antony Beevor'An important and deeply researched book . . . it substantially adds to our understanding of how the Nazi system of genocide and plunder operated' - The Times 'Smith has brought [this story] alive with forensic detail and a truly gripping narrative' - Financial Times 'An important book by one of our best historians' - Simon Sebag Montefiore 'Painful, profound, prescient . . . a magisterial work' - Sonia Purnell In 1938, Vienna was the second largest Jewish city in Europe, home to nearly 200,000 Jewish people. By 1946, only a few thousand had survived. In this heart-wrenching story of loss, fear, courage and hope, acclaimed historian Douglas Smith chronicles the Nazi destruction of Jewish Vienna. Drawing on hundreds of long-forgotten voices, from Jews to Nazis to Gentile collaborators and bystanders, The City Without Jews centres on one remarkable person: Mignon Langnas. Watching as nearly every Jew she knew was expropriated, forced to migrate, or deported to the killing fields and death camps in the East, Mignon vividly recorded her world in diaries and letters, creating an indispensably detailed and poignant account of life under Nazi rule. What emerges from the wreckage of a city bent on Jewish eradication is a gripping and fundamentally human history like no other - one of betrayal, sacrifice, impossible choices and survivor guilt.

Castro - Neuausgabe

Encounters: in 50 Objects

From the late eleventh to the late thirteenth century, during the existence of the Kingdom of Jerusalem and other crusader states, Latin Christians did not only frequently encounter Muslims on the battlefield, but also engaged in unprecedented commercial and cultural exchanges with the Muslim, Eastern Christian, and Jewish inhabitants of the Middle East. Through a focused analysis of fifty objects, this volume examines what material culture can tell us about interpersonal, interfaith, cross-cultural, and trans-regional encounters during this period. This richly illustrated volume explores a variety of Latin Christian, Eastern Christian, Muslim, and Jewish objects, including sculpture, glassware, metalware, manuscripts, textiles, painting, coins, and seals. Addressing the themes of Belief, Conflict, Exchange, Power, and Memory, the essays examine the conception of these objects and the uses to which they were put throughout their history. As a result, there emerges a picture of the Middle East as a place of profound cultural diversity and of multiplicity of encounters between different communities. The book stands as a valuable resource for students and scholars of the medieval crusades, the medieval Middle East and Europe, as well as all those interested in archaeology, art history, global history, and religious studies more broadly.
