This book investigates how arguments for economic growth are perceived and advanced to promote road investment across the world.In literature, the relationship between building roads and achieving economic growth is heavily reliant on quantitative tools while ignoring the contextual details of roading projects. Using the Aristotelian concept of phronesis, the research undertakes six case studies from New Zealand, Britain, the US, Pakistan, Brazil and Kenya. Phronesis is an intellectual virtue capable of incorporating practical problems and contextual details in everyday life. The concept was operationalized by devolving into three main questions in which the roads policy direction, the associated processes and discursive pragmatism were explored. Detailed analysis of following six projects has been carried out: MacKays to Peka Peka Expressway; London Orbital Motorway; Houston Interstate 610 Highway; Lahore Ring Road; Mário Covas Ring Road and the Nairobi Expressway. A study of the changes in wealth and its distribution in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Paris that maps the interplay among wealth, inequality, and welfare Successful economies sustain capital accumulation across generations, and capital accumulation leads to large increases in private wealth. In this book, Gilles Postel-Vinay and Jean-Laurent Rosenthal map the fluctuations in wealth and its distribution in Paris between 1807 and 1977. Drawing on a unique dataset of the bequests of almost 800,000 Parisians, they show that real wealth per decedent varied immensely during this period while inequality began high and declined only slowly. Parisians’ portfolios document startling changes in the geography and types of wealth over time. Postel-Vinay and Rosenthal’s account reveals the impact of economic factors (large shocks, technological changes, differential returns to wealth), political factors (changes in taxation), and demographic and social factors (age and gender) on wealth and inequality. Before World War I, private wealth was highly predictive of other indicators of welfare, including different forms of human capital, age at death, and access to local public goods. After World War I, public intervention reduced—but did not eliminate—the strong connection between wealth inequality and other forms of inequality. Over the two centuries covered, Paris and its wealth were on the vanguard of economic and social change that affected the rest of the country a generation later.

Scotland does not have a 'law of contract', as most comparable jurisdictions do, but rather - due in large part to the intellectual innovations of Viscount Stair - possesses a unitary 'law of voluntary obligations', of which contracts form but a part. This fact is highly significant, but is frequently overlooked. Indeed, the significance of this has even been overlooked by the Scottish Law Commission, who have recently proposed to significantly reform the 'law of contract' in Scotland by urging the passing of a statute which, among other things, would abolish the so-called 'postal acceptance rule'. This short book takes the view that the proposed reforms are wrongheaded and would be deleterious to the coherence of the Scottish legal framework. To that end, it examines the taxonomy of obligations pioneered by Stair, indicates that the application of that taxonomy to situations such as the process of contracting by distance suggests that there is in fact no 'postal acceptance rule' in this jurisdiction and suggests, in light of this, that reform of 'contracts' and the formation of, in Scotland, is better left to the courts and jurists than to the Scottish Parliament (or, for that matter, Westminster).
