This volume explores the intersection of animal protection and economic law within the European Union, offering a bold new framework for safeguarding sentient beings. Despite decades of EU legislation and constitutional recognition of animal sentience, industrial farming, wildlife trade, and animal-based research continue to thrive under economic pressures. A New Approach to Protecting Sentient Beings

For centuries, the Latin notarial system has evolved in response to society's growing demand for legal certainty. Yet the increasing complexity of economic relations calls for a new stage in that evolution: a notarial system capable not only of ensuring legal certainty but also of realizing its full institutional potential to promote economic efficiency in private legal relationships through enhanced governance, conflict prevention, and the preservation of the contractual rationale built throughout the notarial process, so that disputes, when unavoidable, may be resolved consistently with the parties' legitimate choices, interests, and objectives.
 
 This book argues that such evolution requires neither abandoning nor replacing the historical foundations of the Latin notariat, but reinterpreting them in light of contemporary economic challenges. It introduces the Law-and-Economics Notary as the central institutional figure of the Law-and-Economics Notarial Paradigm, a new theoretical framework explaining how the civil-law notarial system can meet growing demands for economic efficiency while preserving the principles that have historically defined its identity.
 
 The book demonstrates that the Law-and-Economics Notary represents a new understanding of the notarial function. Public faith is conceived not only as an instrument of documentary authentication but also as a mechanism of private governance capable of structuring incentives, reducing transaction costs, mitigating information asymmetries and behavioral biases, strengthening trust among economic actors, and fostering more efficient, predictable, and socially beneficial legal relationships.
 
 Developed independently through the integration of law, economics, and notarial practice, the Law-and-Economics Notarial Paradigm later proved to converge with the evolutionary direction reflected in the studies and institutional agenda of the International Union of Notaries. This independent convergence confirms its capacity to explain and operationalize institutional transformations already emerging across the modern civil-law notariat.
 
 By integrating law, economics, and contractual governance, this book offers a new understanding of the notarial function and a coherent paradigm for the evolution of the Latin notarial system. Rather than replacing its traditional foundations, it demonstrates how they can be reinterpreted and further developed, thereby contributing to legal certainty, economic efficiency, preventive justice, and, ultimately, to economic development.

In recent decades, doctrinal, theoretical, and sociological legal research on women's rights - as well as, more broadly, on law and gender from an intersectional perspective - has increasingly come into focus. The requirements of protection, the scope for action, and the equality of women, as well as the legal conceptualization of womanhood, are the subject of intense debate, with differing emphases across legal systems. Time and again, these fundamental rights to freedom and equality have been denied, and they are currently being questioned worldwide, particularly by illiberal and authoritarian regimes. Against this backdrop, the volume brings together current research topics on women's fundamental rights: their theoretical reconstruction, their doctrinal implementation, their enforcement in different legal contexts, and their intersectional dimensions. The contributions are organized into four thematic sections and stem from the legal conference "Female Fundamental Freedoms," held in November 2025 as a symposium of the Research Center for Fundamental Rights at the University of Bayreuth. The aim is not to provide a comprehensive account of this complex discourse, but rather to offer impulses for reflection on key contemporary questions of Female Fundamental Freedoms and to encourage further inquiry.
 

 The volume first explores the historical and theoretical foundations of fundamental rights from a feminist and intersectional perspective. It then addresses the fundamental question of womanhood as a legal category and as a point of reference for fundamental rights, drawing on selected examples from current debates. Third, it examines fundamental issues of equality in the workplace, with particular attention to experiences of intersectional discrimination. Finally, it highlights key aspects of the far-reaching legal field of reproductive rights and situates them within an international context.

An on-the-ground study of junior police academies--contentious school-police partnerships that provide educational resources, career opportunities, and hope for social mobility. Some might see police officers as benevolent sources of protection, but in many communities, they are often perceived as a threat due to a legacy of violent interactions and arrests for arbitrary offenses. How, then, do police sustain their presence in places where people might distrust them? In Kid Cops, sociologist Mai Thai offers one answer: junior police academies, high school programs in which police officers provide courses, mentorship, and job training to students in communities with high rates of juvenile delinquency and poverty. These school-police partnerships have expanded rapidly in the United States over the last few decades, largely in response to political unrest and police violence in the 1990s. Programs vary in their offerings, but they generally aim to ease tensions between communities and law enforcement, while also providing needed resources in neighborhoods where education and job opportunities are scarce. Kid Cops draws on years of observations and interviews with educators, police officers, and, of course, kids. The junior police programs at each high school may have different emphases, but their common goal is for students to graduate from high school and enter college or the workforce. A second goal of the program is to cultivate a positive image of the police. Ultimately, however, Thai finds that these programs tighten the relationship between marginalized youth, schools, and the criminal justice system and strain the students' relationships with their peers, families, and each other. These programs also distract residents from systemic issues of policing and suppress opportunities for meaningful change.
