Enabling Data-Driven Innovation and AI Government in Korea

This book examines how "colorblind" policies perpetuate racial bias by masking the structural and systemic roots of inequality. Leland Ware critically examines the persistence of racial inequality in the United States despite landmark legal advancements, arguing that numerous policies obscure the structural forces that sustain segregation and disparity-particularly in education. Public Policy and Research in Latin America

Fentanyl is a first-person, insider account of how the crisis consumed the Biden Administration amid a series of other national security emergencies. It follows Jake Braun, a senior White House official, and his colleagues while they scramble to respond to the epidemic. As Mexican cartels ruthlessly executed their most radical transformation in 50 years, Braun and his colleagues architected the first U.S. government wide strategy to combat fentanyl in history. The effort brought him to Mexico to meet with Mexican agents who kick down cartel doors for the U.S. government there. He also spent time with data analytics wizards buried in nondescript offices in Virginia suburbs that hunt down Chinese fentanyl precursor chemicals on the Dark Web. He even takes a detour to gather intelligence from Russian migrants in U.S. detention facilities that migrated through cartel-controlled areas of Mexico. In the process, Braun uncovered the remarkable transformation cartels in Mexico underwent over the last 50 years. They morphed from narco-empires the size of Fortune 50 companies specializing in marijuana and cocaine to ones specializing in human migration and, separately, fentanyl. After much painstaking effort, the Biden Administration successfully executed the most sweeping takedown of cartel leadership and fentanyl infrastructure since the crisis began. Due to the efforts of heroic agents, intelligence officers and national security experts, the leviathan U.S. government is now marshaled in ways never before imagined against the Chinese chemical companies and cartels propagating the fentanyl epidemic. Further, the strategy seems to be working. Just a year after it was kicked off, the fentanyl fatalities dropped nearly 37%. Yet the crisis persists. Finally, Braun draws on his unique experience combating the epidemic to outline how the U.S. government can once and for all end the fentanyl crisis in America.

This book investigates measures to increase diversity in the legal profession of England and Wales and the impact on these measures of equality law, specifically in the way it enables organisations lawfully to take positive or affirmative action. The book combines a qualitative interview study of lawyers, legal regulators, recruitment consultants and other civil society actors, with analysis of developments in the legal profession, in equality law and in understanding of the role of law in society. The evidence paints a puzzling picture of the law on positive action being experienced as limiting what employers may do to advance equality, and yet, of significant positive action being taken anyway, at least in this section of the legal profession. The glimpse into legal practice provided by qualitative interviews with a range of lawyers, regulators and civil society actors revealed complex attitudes, persistent barriers to fundamental change, and, in hindsight, that liberalizing positive action laws was never likely to make much difference. This case study therefore cautions against overestimating equality law's power to drive change while suggesting strategies for enhancing its effectiveness. At the broadest level, the book argues for frank acknowledgment of law's limitations, a stronger focus on understanding how legal mechanisms function in practice before deploying them, and much more attention to the potential for advancing equality and addressing broader societal challenges with more imaginative, innovative implementation of existing laws and the use of non-legislative initiatives.

This book considers whether Parliament recognises a constitutional right to property. Parliament is supreme: in theory, there is nothing to stop it from passing laws to confiscate property. Nevertheless, MPs often argue that a proposed law would be unconstitutional. What does this mean in a system without a written constitution? What counts as a sound argument about constitutional rights? And what influence do constitutional arguments have on the legislative process? The book takes a close look at these questions.
