Community Development Research and Practice Series

Laying the Groundwork for Community Wealth Building

Asset-Based Community Development and Business Cooperatives

This book challenges the view that legal positivism should be reduced to a conceptual analysis of legal validity. Instead, Elena Namli reclaims legal positivism as a theory of the relationship between law, morality, and politics. Presenting novel interpretations of the classical works of Herbert L. A. Hart, Joseph Raz, and Jürgen Habermas, Namli frames legal positivism as a theory that makes possible a moral and political critique of valid law. Moreover, this book defends the dialectical relationship between law, politics, and morality by combining a positivist approach to legal validity with a constructivist ethical theory which strengthens the critical potential of legal positivism. Legally valid norms may not always be morally justified, but understanding the moral quality of legal regulations is essential for comprehending modern law.

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERA grounded and intimate portrait of life by Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.Where We Keep the Light is the story of public service and personal faith. From an early age, Josh Shapiro learned and practiced the power of showing up, listening, and executing, to make people’s lives a little better. In the pages of this account of his life, Shapiro relates powerful stories about his family, his faith, and what matters to Americans tired of all the divisiveness and distrust in our leaders.Reflecting on what he’s learned by knocking on doors, serving his community, and tackling the tough problems that no one wanted to touch in new and different ways, Shapiro reminds us that government can be a force for good, that conventional wisdom is rarely wise, and there’s more that unites Americans than divides us.Shapiro is answering a call to service at a time when we need leaders like him to step up. Where We Keep the Light is a must-read account of his life and what lies ahead.

Stories from a Life of Service

Where We Keep the Light

What goals are still feasible for the politics of emancipation on a ruined planet? This is where we are. Today's techno-oligarchs are not concerned with saving the planet; rather, they have accepted the end of progress and are focused on safeguarding their wealth in the face of an impending political and ecological collapse. Artificial intelligence and algorithms make decisions for us. Climate breakdown has long steamed past the wreckage of the Paris Agreement.Perhaps the accelerationists have the right idea. Accelerationism - which aims to resolve the current crisis through the intensification of technological development - is the only philosophy not clinging to the now-extinct idea of progress. The idea has gained ground on both the left and right: but the right-wing is shot through with misanthropy, while the left remains entangled in a faith in technological progress and the domination of nature.Transcending capitalism at the end of progress requires a synthesis of the two. The result of this synthesis: Dark Socialism. From 'rock star philosopher' Kohei Saito comes an anticapitalist clarion call for our breakneck times, channeling despair into a socialist project equal to the end of progress.

New York Times Bestseller and #1 Los Angeles Times BestsellerA "gripping, unshakeable firsthand account" (San Francisco Chronicle) of the firestorm that consumed Los Angeles, from the MS NOW reporter and New York Times bestselling author of Separated, who covered the fires on the ground as an LA native."Read[s] like a sci-fi thriller.” —Los Angeles TimesOn the morning of January 7, 2025, a message pinged the phone of Jacob Soboroff, a national reporter for MS NOW. “Big Palisades fire. We are evacuating,” his brother texted within minutes of the blaze engulfing the hillside behind the home where he and his pregnant wife were living. “Really bad.” An attached photo showed a huge black plume rising from behind the house, an umbrella of smoke towering over everything they owned. Jacob rushed to the office of the bureau chief.“I should go. I grew up in the Palisades.”Soon he was on the front line of the blaze—his first live report of what would turn out to be weeks covering unimaginable destruction, from both the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire, in Altadena. In the days to come, Soboroff appeared across the networks of NBC News as Los Angeles was ablaze, met with displaced residents and workers, and pressed Governor Gavin Newsom in an interview on Meet the Press. But no story Soboroff has covered at home or abroad—the trauma of family separation at the border, the displacement of the war in Ukraine, the collapse of order in Haiti—could have prepared him for reporting live as the hallmarks of his childhood were engulfed in flames around him while his hometown burned to the ground. But for Soboroff, questions remained after the fires were controlled: what had he just witnessed? How could it have happened? Is it inevitable something like it will happen again? This set Soboroff off on months of reporting—with firefighters, fire victims, political leaders, academics, earth scientists, wildlife biologists, meteorologists and more—that made him keenly aware of how the misfortune of seeing his past carbonize was also a form of time travel into the dystopian world his children will inhabit. This is because the 2025 LA fires were not an isolated tragedy, but rather they are a harbinger—"the fire of the future," in the words of one senior emergency—management official.Firestorm is the story of the costliest wildfire in American history, the people it affected and the deeply personal connection to one journalist covering it. It is a love letter to Los Angeles, a yearning to understand the fires, and why America’s new age of disaster we are living through portends that—without a reckoning of how Los Angeles burned—there is more yet, and worse, to come.

An in-depth exploration of the network of agencies involved in policing child pornography—and what the future of security and care looks like. Facing the Child investigates the technocratic expertise in the policing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mitali Thakor argues that CSAM has come to be framed as primarily a digital problem, to be resolved digitally, thereby unleashing a new form of corporatized policing helmed by global technology companies. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on 4 years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book argues that in the 2010s, a network of technology companies, NGOs, and law enforcement created the notion of a “virtual child” in need of techno-solutionist saving to justify a vast expansion of surveillance technologies. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.

Palgrave Studies in Classical Liberalism

“While American conservatives and classical liberals have long been preoccupied with defending the American political system against those who wanted to transform it, their defense rested on a deep misunderstanding. The tragedy occurred when “defenders of the Constitution” entered into alliances with groups that rejected the constitution's principles, leading to the anti-democratic takeover of the Republican Party. Gus diZerega’s book is an indispensable guide to the historical origins of political polarization in the United States.”

—
David Emanuel Andersson
, National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan
This short, concise book offers a theoretically grounded reinterpretation of American political development, integrating political theory, political economy, and intellectual history. Drawing on James Madison and the Scottish Enlightenment, and informed by Austrian economic thought, it argues that the U.S. Constitution is best understood as a spontaneous order: an emergent framework coordinating diverse actors through procedural rules, overlapping majorities, and checks and balances rather than fixed policy outcomes.Set against this perspective, the book examines how European-derived frameworks – particularly classical liberal interpretations associated with Lord Acton – misread the American system and influenced modern conservatism. It distinguishes between constitutional conservatism rooted in rule of law and a Southern conservatism grounded in hierarchy, tracing their convergence through late twentieth-century political realignment. In extending Hayekian analysis to democratic institutions, the book contributes to debates in political economy, American political development, and complex adaptive systems. Gus diZerega
is an independent scholar of political theory whose work focuses on democracy, spontaneous order, and complex adaptive systems. He received his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley, and is the author of Persuasion, Power, and Polity, an early application of Hayekian theory to democratic systems. A founder and editorial board member of Cosmos + Taxis, his research spans political theory, environmental politics, institutional analysis, and metaphysics.

The Tragedy of American Conservatism and Classical Liberalism

Democracy as a Spontaneous Order

A giant of the political left, Rosa Luxemburg is one of the foremost minds in the canon of revolutionary socialist thought. But she was much more than just a thinker. She made herself heard in a world inimical to the voices of strong-willed women. She overcame physical infirmity and the prejudice she faced as a Jew to become an active revolutionary whose philosophy enriched every corner of an incredibly productive and creative life—her many friendships, her sexual intimacies, and her love of science, nature and art. Always opposed to the First World War, when others on the German left were swept up on a tide of nationalism, she was imprisoned and murdered in 1919 fighting for a revolution she knew to be doomed. In this beautifully drawn work of graphic biography, writer and artist Kate Evans has opened up her subject’s intellectual world to a new audience, grounding Luxemburg’s ideas in the realities of an inspirational and deeply affecting life.
