This volume is unconventional in its critical intent since it counters the established criticism that views Joseph Conrad as a predominantly male writer. The volume gathers exclusively female scholars to elaborate upon the feminine in the legacy of an author heretofore mainly associated with exotic places and male sensitivities. It is expected to attract readers by virtue of the unusual perspective that is directed at the feminine rather than the masculine, as the latter has governed the critical discourse since the work of Conrad appeared on the literary market. The scholars are interested in the echoes of Conrad's extensive reading and his experiences that are discernible in his prose and in their resonance in his works, and also the Conradian resonances in the world of literature.

Der römische Dichter Martial, Klassiker des antiken Epigramms, wurde bis in die 1980er Jahre nicht literaturwissenschaftlich interpretiert, sondern diente lediglich als (vermeintlich authentischer) Zeuge für das Leben im alten Rom. 1988 legte Niklas Holzberg mit seiner Einführung die erste moderne Martial-Monographie vor. Da nun auch bald immer mehr auf die Textanalyse konzentrierte Untersuchungen entstanden, publizierte der Autor 2002 eine grundlegend überarbeitete Version, die, 2012 nachgedruckt, jetzt einer erneuten Aktualisierung bedurfte.
Wie bereits in der dritten Auflage ist der Gattungskontext der Epigramme Martials weit stärker als ursprünglich in den Blick genommen. Nun werden auch die von unbekannten Dichtern der Kaiserzeit als Werke Vergils und Senecas verfassten Epigramme ebenso ausführlich gewürdigt wie diejenigen eines Anonymus, dessen Thema die mit dem Gartengott Priap verbundenen Obszönitäten sind. Auch die Epigramme der 16 Bücher umfassenden&nbsp;Griechischen Anthologie, deren älteste aus dem 5. Jahrhundert v. Chr. stammen, bezieht Holzberg in seine vergleichende Übersicht ein. Die seit 2000 besonders zahlreich gewordenen philologischen Arbeiten, welche die umfangreiche Bibliographie verzeichnet, werden für die aktualisierte Fassung des Buchs erschlossen.
