Originally published in 1967, this book provides a detailed survey of economic events from the early 1950s to the late 1960s. It provides an excellent source of reference on economic policy issues and will also be invaluable as a textbook of mid-20th century economic history. Part 1 discusses demand management, the balance of payments and regional development before 1961. The authors stress the social and administrative aspects of Britain's mal du siècle. A turning point came in 1961 when the Conservatives set up the National Economic Development Council. This experiment in 'indicative planning' and the changes introduced by Labour after 1964 are described in Part 2. Despite short-term demand mismanagement by successive governments, 'indicative planning' has made it possible to introduce a number of constructive new measures, in particular prices and incomes policy, regional development and the modernization of economic structures to each of which the book devotes a chapter.

This book provides an overview of male violence against women and the failure of the legal system. Male violence against women is pervasive. From the bedroom to the boardroom; from the home to the hospital; from the court to the care home, women are subject to male violence. The legal response to this is weak. The violence is either invisible or downplayed. This book explains why and how the law can do better. It explores how violence in different settings reinforces and magnifies the abuse in others. Too often violence against women is considered in silos (sexual assault; domestic abuse; street harassment, etc.). The book argues that they must be seen on a continuum. It brings out the common themes, but also the subtle differences in context between the scenes of violence. In doing so it argues that we cannot understand an incident of male violence against women without understanding the broader context within which that takes place. The book claims that the legal response to male violence against women downplays the severity of the harm or even fails to recognise it. This is a must-read for those interested in criminal law, gender politics, and feminist approaches to law. It is only when the true nature of the problem is grasped that the law can start to provide an effective response to it. This book shows how a better and more effective law can be found.

A rich history of the development of American minimum wage policy with lessons for today. Despite broad popular support for robust minimum wage policy, the federal minimum wage is now worth less--in real, inflation-adjusted terms--than at any time since 1949. While some state and local governments have stepped in to fill this void, others have declined to set any minimum wage standard at all. Traversing more than 100 years of history, Raising the Floor examines how interest groups have navigated the highly decentralized American political system to shape the development of federal, state, and local minimum wage laws. In her analysis, Shanna Rose highlights the importance of American federalism. She argues that because federalism creates multiple arenas for policy change, interest groups have sought out the sites most conducive to their goals, shifting their lobbying efforts as new obstacles and opportunities emerge. Federalism has facilitated minimum wage policymaking by fostering policy experimentation, learning, and diffusion across states and by allowing state and local governments to overcome gridlock and status-quo biases at the national level. This open access book critically analyses a wide range of consumer law issues generated or exacerbated by the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things challenges many of the dichotomies which have shaped current laws: goods-services, hardware-software, tangible-intangible, online-offline. The book focuses on 4 specific challenges: things-as-service, liability, bricking of physical devices through software control, and the potential for enhanced personalisation, especially for digital assistants. The chapters analyse specific applications such as smart homes, connected cars, and consumer wearables with a view to providing innovative solutions to the new challenges posed by the Internet of Things, and to steer the development of the Internet of Things in a fairer direction. As well as offering an important analysis of the potential for smart consumer laws in the Internet of Things, the book also provides important insights into the growing divergence between Germany's and the UK's consumer laws since Brexit.
