This book critically examines violence and violent crime through sociological, psychological, and theoretical perspectives, analyzing the complex relationships between policing, community conflict, and crime control. Bringing together leading experts, it explores the underlying factors that contribute to violence, the impact of police practices, and the challenges of balancing law enforcement with public trust. The chapters are organized thematically to address key issues, including the psychology of violence, the role of communities in crime prevention, police brutality and accountability, and the increasing violence targeting law enforcement. Taking a global and comparative approach, the book investigates case studies from North America, Europe, Asia, Africa and the Pacific to assess how different societies respond to violent crime. It further considers policy implications, proposing evidence-based strategies to reduce violence, improve policing practices, and enhance institutional integrity in an evolving security landscape.

Gender Equality Behind Bars represents the first analysis of prison and immigration detention policies, broadly identified as penality policies, within the context of gender policy studies. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, it provides a roadmap for better understanding penality policy from feminist and gendered perspectives. An introductory chapter examines the paradoxical relationship between gender equality and life behind bars for women.&nbsp;This is followed by ten in-depth case-studies on gender and penality policies in a unique line-up of countries in the Global North&nbsp;(Denmark, Poland, Portugal, Canada, the UK and Spain) and the Global South (Zimbabwe, Uruguay and Peru). The comparative conclusion identifies cross-national and cross-sectoral trends and proposes a research agenda for a gendered approach to penality policies. Issues including discrimination against women prisoners and women migrant detainees, gender-bias in prison environments&nbsp;and potential for gender transformation&nbsp;“behind bars” are covered throughout the book. Combining theoretical and empirical evidence, gender equality behind bars will appeal to scholars and students of public policy, gender studies, anthropology and criminology, as well as those interested in penal policies, criminal justice and punishment.

A Feminist Approach to Penality Policies Worldwide

Gender Equality Behind Bars

Following the Asian economic crisis of the 1990s, this is the first book to examine the structure and transformation of the labor markets and social stratification of contemporary East Asia, namely Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and China, focusing in particular on gender inequality. It deals with social mobility and gender differences in unemployment, temporary employment and self-employment. Additionally, gender segregation, social identity and suicide rates are also addressed. Taken together, the issues raised in this volume reinforce the advantage of a comparative approach to East Asian Studies. The findings, supported by strong statistical analysis, clearly call into question a longstanding view that East Asian gender regimes and class structure are homogeneous. Indeed, this is demonstrably not the case, as Labor Markets, Gender and Social Stratification in East Asia shows, revealing as it does considerable diversities in labor markets, gender regimes, and social mobility within East Asian societies due to historical and institutional differences. How visual fantasies of violence, animality, and political agency offered an alternative image of masculinity during the Enlightenment &nbsp; Centering on animal bodies and assertive masculinity, the visual strategies of hunting art may appear incongruent with our understanding of Rococo aesthetics and the early Enlightenment. But these themes, embraced with enthusiasm by artists and patrons, inspired artworks in every genre and medium in eighteenth-century France. As the country expanded its colonial empire, the absolute monarchy existed in tension with ambitious elites, and the Enlightenment eroded old certainties about selfhood and society, hunting art provided a visual language of personal and national sovereignty written with bodies of men and animals. Amy Freund revises our received notions of eighteenth-century French art and culture, confronting us with a visual culture of animality, violence, and death: a Rococo of dogs and guns. &nbsp; Noble Beasts highlights the work of François Desportes, Jean-Baptiste Oudry, and others who, operating from the heart of institutions such as the Royal Academy and the Gobelins manufactory, produced an astonishing volume of highly accomplished work. The book draws on the critical frameworks of human-animal studies and on Enlightenment philosophical debates to explore how and why hunting art’s aesthetic and political claims blurred the lines between human and animal.
