A unified framework for understanding monetary policy, including recent unprecedented interventions by central banks Over the past two decades, monetary policy has been deployed in unprecedented ways, as central banks attempted to mitigate the adverse consequences of the 2007-2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 global lockdown, and recent inflationary surges. In Monetary Economics and Policy, Pierpaolo Benigno offers a new way to understand the potency and effectiveness of monetary policy, presenting a unified modeling framework to analyze policy challenges posed by both paper and digital currency systems. He investigates current theoretical and policy controversies, drawing connections with historical themes in monetary economics. Benigno examines how central banks control the value of their currency amid competition from cryptocurrencies and private money-like securities; discusses the desirability of inflation targeting for macroeconomic stabilization; and explores theoretical grounds for the unconventional monetary policies seen in the recent period of zero nominal interest rates, including forward guidance, quantitative and credit easing, and helicopter money. He accompanies his analysis with an innovative visual representation of the New Keynesian model and inflation-targeting policies. Benigno's novel framework also allows the study of monetary policy normalization through quantitative tightening toward what has become the "new normal." He discusses the optimal provision of liquidity and the different roles of the government and financial intermediaries. Finally, he recounts historical controversies regarding the inflation-unemployment trade-off to understand the 2020s inflationary surge and delves into the causes and dynamics of hyperinflations, tracing them to the subtle, ambiguous linkages between monetary and fiscal policy and weak balance-sheet conditions for the central bank.

A Foundation for Modern Currency Systems

Monetary Economics and Policy

Economics is vital, but its labyrinth of equations can make it feel disconnected from the real world. Enter a powerful tool: the metaphor. From longtime economics journalist Peter Coy comes an approachable and fun guide to the metaphors that unlock its power. With nearly 500 alphabetized entries, complemented by playful illustrations, Economics Without Numbers demystifies concepts, exploring their origins, the truths they express, and where they fall short. The result is a delightful and original primer on economic ideas and history that's perfect for students and anyone who wants to understand what makes the world go 'round.Coy has spent decades collecting these vivid metaphors. From "trickle-down economics" (the idea that making the rich richer will help the poor) to "inductivist turkey" (a parable about the perils of assuming that a trend will persist without knowing its cause), Coy brings economics to life.

An A-to-Z Guide for the Rest of Us

Economics without Numbers

"Wir haben kein Geld." "Wir leben über unsere Verhältnisse." "Schulden führen in die Pleite." "Mindestlohn vernichtet Arbeitsplätze." "Ohne Wachstum kein Wohlstand."

Contributions to Economics

This book is of interest to economists working in applied demand analysis, marketing professionals studying product substitution and complementarity, and policymakers evaluating the effects of taxes, subsidies, and regulatory interventions on consumer behavior. Applying the analytical framework on the internal structure of consumption, this book explores how different categories of consumer spending interact and how these relationships shape the broader structure of consumption. The analyses focus on timely and policy-relevant issues, including the distributional impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, the implementation of safe drinking water standards (with particular attention to low-income households), and the potential effects of carbon taxes on consumer expenditures.A key strength of the framework lies in its ability to derive comprehensive arrays of own- and cross-price elasticities from household expenditure survey data—even in the absence of direct price information.

“If you read just one book about economics, make it Andrew Leigh's clear, insightful, and remarkable (and short) work.” —Claudia Goldin, recipient of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Economics and Henry Lee Professor of Economics at Harvard UniversityA sweeping, engrossing history of how economic forces have shaped the world—all in under 200 pagesOne of The Economist's Best Books of the YearIn How Economics Explains the World, Harvard-trained economist Andrew Leigh presents a new way to understand the human story. From the dawn of agriculture to AI, here is story of how ingenuity, greed, and desire for betterment have, to an astonishing degree, determined our past, present, and future. This small book indeed tells a big story. It is the story of capitalism – of how our market system developed. It is the story of the discipline of economics, and some of the key figures who formed it. And it is the story of how economic forces have shaped world history. Why didn’t Africa colonize Europe instead of the other way around? What happened when countries erected trade and immigration barriers in the 1930s? Why did the Allies win World War II? Why did inequality in many advanced countries fall during the 1950s and 1960s? How did property rights drive China’s growth surge in the 1980s? How does climate change threaten our future prosperity? You’ll find answers to these questions and more in How Economics Explains the World.“Can a short book survey the full history of something so vast and remain readable? To find out, read How Economics Explains the World, by Andrew Leigh. In simple, clear language—and less than 200 pages—it does exactly what its title promises. … Leigh canters through the history of human progress, pausing briefly to explain the economic forces and ideas that drove it forward. … Along the way, readers meet the big economic thinkers who sought to explain these forces. Both finance aficionados and mere novices will read, savour and return to this book.” –The Economist, “The Best New Books to Read about Finance”

Planet Money

Most of us think about money every day. But how many of us know how it actually works?Every morning, someone unassumingly types numbers into a spreadsheet, hits enter and creates millions of pounds. Somewhere deep underground, a machine most of us will never see props up the entire British economy. And hidden in a vault nearby are individual banknotes worth £100 million each. These are just some of the surprising truths about how money works. The Bank of England know more about the money system than most - after all, it is their job to keep it running smoothly. Now, for the first time, two of its economists take you deep into their vaults to tell you the inside story of money. They explain how ordinary banks are able to create money from scratch, and what stops that descending into chaos. They explore what causes inflation and why one country tried to solve rising prices by asking its citizens to cut all banknotes in half. They uncover how a baby hippo briefly became a global currency, and what that says about the future of money. And they reveal what goes on inside the Bank of England during a banking crisis, and why it means your money is safer now than ever before.Along the way, they explore how money is changing today - and what new technologies like crypto mean for its future. The result is a lively and surprising guide to how money is supposed to work, what happens when it doesn't, and where it might be going next.

Why the consequences of a prolonged period of weaker economic growth will be more profound than anyone dares to predictIn the heady progress of the post-war era, our lifestyles changed, our political systems adapted, and rapid economic growth became the model of every developed economy. But this prevailing consensus is falling apart around us. Growth is now, at best, no more than anaemic. Policymakers dream about an AI revolution and tweak their fiscal rules to accommodate a newly-austere economic reality but, all the while, government debt soars, financial markets become increasingly jittery, and voters lose trust in their politicians.Celebrated economist Stephen D. King asks how our politics will adapt to such persistently low growth. While leaders make fiscal promises based on a future that is unlikely to materialise, nationalism thrives, battlelines are drawn between perceived winners and losers, and the rules-based international order crumbles. The absence of growth triggers invidious political wrangling over tax, welfare, defence and infrastructure, intensifies competition for resources, and leads to social instability.King shows how our new world is governed by them-and-us divisions over limited economic spoils. This is the political economy of plunder.
