Seminar paper from the year 2023 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 2,0, University of Hamburg, course: Seminar: Empirical Financial Economics, language: English, abstract: Therefore, the purpose of this work is to find out how cash holdings have developed over time and what company-specific factors influences them. In this context, we examine the period from 1988 to 2021, following closely the approach of Bates. The main question is whether the findings from the literature are transferable to Canadian companies or if there are differences.To address this question, we will first briefly review the literature for the theoretical background in chapter 2, which we will refer to in our later empirical analysis. In chapter 3, we outline the composition and origin of our dataset, as well as the methodology. Chapter 4 looks at the development of cash and leverage holdings over the whole period. Section 5 examines whether there are sub-population specific differences in our dataset. In chapter 6, we utilize regression models of the cash ratios to see which corporate indicators have an impact on the cash ratios. Section 7 considers whether the agency theory has an impact on cash holdings. We conclude in chapter 8.Cash holdings are one of the most important components of a company. As the cash holdings of U.S. companies have increased remarkably over the last decades, the question arises whether this is also true for the geographic neighboring country Canada. Therefore, this thesis analyzes the corporate cash holdings of Canadian public companies. While the cash holdings of U.S. companies are well studied on a broad scale in the finance literature  and Opler, there are only a few publications on Canada.

Can Art Change the World?

Demokratie lebt vom Mitmachen - nicht nur beim Wählen, sondern auch und gerade bei der Gestaltung der konkreten Lebensbedingungen vor Ort, in Städten und Gemeinden. Das Buch behandelt das Bürgerbudget: Projektideen der Bürger:innen treten in einen Wettbewerb um Fördermittel und Stimmen zur Realisierung. Welche dieser Vorschläge dabei im Rahmen eines vom Stadt- bzw. Gemeinderat zur Verfügung gestellten Budgets finanziell gefördert und schließlich umgesetzt werden, entscheiden die Bürger:innen selbst. Wie die hier versammelten Beiträge eindrucksvoll demonstrieren, handelt es sich um ein höchst innovatives Beteiligungsmodell, das vorzeigbare Erfolge für sich verbuchen kann.
Neben politikwissenschaftlichen und juristischen Perspektiven auf die Thematik werden auch erste empirische Untersuchungen zum Bürgerbudget in Sachsen und Brandenburg vorgestellt. Exemplarische Fallbeispiele aus der kommunalen Praxis in Deutschland und Österreich zeigen für Städte und Gemeinden unterschiedlicher Größe, wie Bürgerbudgets jeweils institutionalisiert werden können, um lokale Demokratie zu stärken und bürgerschaftliches Engagement zu fördern.

Dr. Peter Patze-Diordiychuk gründete die Akademie für Lokale Demokratie e.V. Für diese ist er heute noch ehrenamtlich als Vereinsvorsitzender tätig. Seit mehr als 15 Jahren beschäftigt er sich im In- und Ausland mit den Themen Demokratieförderung, Bürgerbeteiligung sowie nachhaltige Regional- und Kommunalentwicklung, gegenwärtig als Referent für Bürgerbeteiligung beim Bundesamt für die Sicherheit der nuklearen Entsorgung (BASE). Ihm ist es ein Anliegen, Theorie und Praxis enger miteinander zu verzahnen.

Paul Renner studierte Sozialwissenschaften mit den Teilbereichen Politik, Soziologie und Methodenlehre an der Universität Stuttgart. Mit seiner Bachelorthesis zu Partizipationsprozessen auf kommunaler Ebene schloss er 2015 sein Studium ab. 2018 beendete er erfolgreich sein Masterstudium Planung und Partizipation (M. Sc.). Ehrenamtlich engagiert er sich in seiner Stadt als Stadtrat und macht sich auf Ebene der Kommunalpolitik für mehr Bürger- und Jugendbeteiligung stark. Gegenwärtig arbeitet er als Jugendhilfeplaner und Sachgebietsleiter im Jugendamt Enzkreis. 

Dr. Andreas Paust hat Sozialwissenschaften studiert und über Bürgerbegehren und Bürgerentscheid promoviert. Er war Geschäftsführer kommunaler Ratsfraktionen und hat sich bei einer Kommunikationsagentur und bei der Bertelsmann Stiftung mit Bürgerbeteiligung beschäftigt. Derzeit arbeitet er in der Öffentlichkeitsbeteiligung eines Strom-Übertragungsnetzbetreibers. Er ist Vorsitzender des Kompetenzzentrums Bürgerbeteiligung e.V. und betreibt den Bürgerbeteiligungs-Blog partizipendium.de.
