Major, L.N. Voyer, Surintendant De La Police Provinciale: Biographie

Georg Spalatin

Both an epic history and an intimate family story, a startling account of the lives of Black cops in one Midwestern city. Amid the fervent protests over police killings in 2020, the reporter Wilbert L. Cooper returned to his hometown of Cleveland to profile the president of a Black police organization called the Black Shield. The group had aligned itself with activists calling for reform, but its president was notorious for having shot a young unarmed Black man years earlier. As Cooper explored the question of whether Black cops can create the kind of radical changes in policing that Black people are calling for, he was also welcomed by the members of the group in a different, more complicated capacity: as Sergeant Will Cooper's son. For Cooper, this assignment was personal. His parents are retired Black Cleveland cops; his sister was a Cleveland cop; on his mother's side, there has been a Cleveland cop in the family since 1950. In unearthing the dramatic histories of the Black Shield and his own family, Cooper tells the intertwined stories of the two: his relatives, whose lineage traces back to the Great Migration and who chose policing because it was one of the few stepping stones to economic security and status in a segregated city; and an organization that, over decades of cultural and political upheaval, has cycled endlessly between rebellion and acquiescence. An intimate, bold work of literary nonfiction, The Black Shield is an urgent exploration of the complex duality of the Black cop. Cooper grapples with a knot of contradictions: Is the Black officer a sign of progressive change, or of a system that shifts its appearance without changing its outcomes? How to reconcile the fact that policing helped lift his family out of poverty while it has kept its knee on the necks of his people? Fearless and singularly powerful, The Black Shield gives us an American story about race and power that has never been told before.

An American Memoir of Family and Power

“The stories in this bewitching collection begin in the known world before tilting towards mystery and rebellion—a book full of pleasure and surprise.” —Aysegül Savas, author of The Anthropologists and Long Distance: Stories Startling, spellbinding stories, in which appearances and intentions are rarely what they seem from an exciting new voice in fiction. A psychic harnesses her talent for animal communication to extract a perfect revenge. A stone appears in a woman’s pocket like a charm, only to end up lodged in her partner’s throat. A condescending artist, who considers his girlfriend too conventional, throws a dinner party where he’s served a painful and consequential truth. Jess Gibson brings us twelve probing, sideways tales that wrestle with the limits of perception and possibility. The men and women in her stories confront contradictory forces: the beautiful can turn grotesque, the exalted can fall into disgrace, the genius can be proved an impostor. Sharp, funny, surprising, and utterly original, The Good Eye announces a brilliant new voice in contemporary fiction.

A New York Times Notable Book of the Year An Economist Book of the Year An NPR Best Novel of the Year From the National Book Award-winning author Denis Johnson (Tree of Smoke) comes Train Dreams, one of Johnson's most evocative works of fiction. Contemplative, precise, and unforgettable, Train Dreams is Denis Johnson's epic in miniature, charting the upheavals of the twentieth century through the eyes of one ordinary man. Known for his stories of American abjection, Johnson uses the slim space of Train Dreams to commit to the sublime: the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, the integrity of a perfect kiss, the totalizing force of grief. Immense in its impact and exact in its attention, Train Dreams traces the injuries and grace of time itself with a brutal sensitivity only Johnson can offer.

Maria Theresia

After years spent outrunning her past, Cecília reexamines the case of a close family friend killed by a colleague and rival: her father. In 1988, shortly after Brazil reestablishes democratic rule, a state congressman is shot and killed in Porto Alegre. The main suspect: a close friend and colleague in congress, Representative Raul Matzenbacher. Many years later, Cecília Matzenbacher, his daughter, migrates from Southern Brazil to California, where she finds work as a taxidermist. Her temperament is ideally suited to this type of restoration and the careful reconstruction of a world frozen in time. But as Cecília confronts her own history and the memories of the investigation surrounding her father, her knack for composition frays. When news arrives that Raul has suffered a stroke and Cecília's chances to see him again may be limited, her past can no longer stay put, posed like a specimen behind glass. Her story emerges, the past stalking her present, threatening to derail the life she's made for herself in the United States. In sleek, arresting prose imbued with the suspense-filled edge of a true-crime thriller, Diorama cements Carol Bensimon's status as one of the most dynamic voices in contemporary Brazilian literature and demonstrates her narrative gifts at their apex. Fusing police procedural, coming-of-age story, and family drama, Diorama is a moving mystery about what and how we remember, a novel that endangers our notions of what is or isn't still alive inside all of us.
